rage depuis maintenant quatre ans presque jour pour jour, sans r\u00e9elle avanc\u00e9e ni sur le terrain ni \u00e0 la table des n\u00e9gociations, la situation semble bel et bien convenir \u00e0 une arm\u00e9e russe plus d\u2019occupation que d\u2019invasion, comme si l\u2019ultime objectif n\u2019\u00e9tait pas tant v\u00e9ritablement le gain de territoire, mais plut\u00f4t l\u2019affaiblissement r\u00e9gional, le d\u00e9sordre g\u00e9opolitique engendr\u00e9, et le chaos institutionnel qui s\u2019ensuit.<\/p><p>Dans ce contexte, le r\u00e9alisateur fran\u00e7ais Olivier Assayas \u2013 notamment du double portrait \u00ab Sils Maria \u00bb, du thriller international \u00ab Cuban Network \u00bb ou plus r\u00e9cemment de l\u2019excellente et particuli\u00e8rement atypique et auto-critique s\u00e9rie \u00ab Irma Vep \u00bb \u2013 adapte avec son co-sc\u00e9nariste Emmanuel Carr\u00e8re le roman-essai de Giuliano da Empoli publi\u00e9 en 2022 alors que la r\u00e9cente phase de guerre russo-ukrainienne \u00e9clatait. L\u2019\u0153uvre suit la trajectoire de Vadim Baranov, personnage fictif inspir\u00e9 de Vladislav Sourkov, ancien conseiller politique de Vladimir Poutine, au terme d\u2019une longue confession qui sert de fil rouge. Profil atypique, issu du monde de la culture et de l\u2019art, Baranov raconte \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re personne son ascension au c\u0153ur du pouvoir russe, depuis les ann\u00e9es 1990 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019affirmation d\u2019un r\u00e9gime autoritaire vertical au sein duquel il th\u00e9orise ce concept de \u2018d\u00e9mocratie souveraine\u2019. Charg\u00e9 de la mise en sc\u00e8ne du pouvoir, il con\u00e7oit la politique comme un th\u00e9\u00e2tre permanent, fond\u00e9 sur le brouillage entre vrai et faux, opposition et domination. Gouverner par le monopole de la subversion, par l\u2019incertitude. Faire de la critique elle-m\u00eame un outil de pouvoir, laisser les opposants (les plus bavards) sur sc\u00e8ne pour mieux s\u2019en servir (et assoir sa popularit\u00e9). Baranov vit le th\u00e9\u00e2tre politique int\u00e9rieur et ext\u00e9rieur comme l\u2019accomplissement de son parcours en tant qu\u2019artiste. Trump ayant pour but ultime \u00e0 l\u2019heure actuelle une propagation du chaos et de l\u2019instabilit\u00e9 dans des \u00c9tats d\u00e9mocrates o\u00f9 tout \u00e9tait justement parfaitement calme et apais\u00e9 et parmi les moins en crise \u00e9conomique, sociale, s\u00e9curitaire ou sanitaire. Mue par un certain sens de l\u2019humiliation, cette philosophie politique remet le rapport de force sur le devant de la sc\u00e8ne, \u00e0 travers tout ce qui peut faire croire ou s\u2019apparenter \u00e0 de la force, et joue de manipulations \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle non pas pour cr\u00e9er des divisions mais bien appuyer sur les divisions d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sentes au sein de toute soci\u00e9t\u00e9 : faire s\u2019entrechoquer les opinions, les rages, les clivages, \u201ctordre dans un sens puis dans l\u2019autre\u201d \u2026<\/p><p>En nous ouvrant les portes d\u2019un monde opaque et en proposant une r\u00e9flexion int\u00e9ressante sur les ressorts du pouvoir contemporain, \u00ab Le Mage du Kremlin \u00bb s\u2019impose comme une adaptation particuli\u00e8rement fid\u00e8le au livre qui flirte toujours avec la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 croiser certaines figures secondaires toutes particuli\u00e8res comme Limonov ou Prigojine. N\u00e9anmoins Olivier Assayas rel\u00e8gue au second plan l\u2019aspect perp\u00e9tuel de la verticalit\u00e9 du pouvoir russe, et de la dimension cyclique du tsarisme \u00e0 travers les trois g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de Baranov (grand-p\u00e8re et Russie imp\u00e9riale, p\u00e8re et Russie sovi\u00e9tique, et narrateur contemporain de Vladimir Vladimirovitch). Et surtout, il opte pour une fin diff\u00e9rente ajoutant un aboutissement \u00e0 cette d\u00e9monstration fictivo-r\u00e9aliste.<\/p><p>Cette fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 extr\u00eame conf\u00e8re au long-m\u00e9trage une dimension de reconstitution visuelle, flirtant sans cesse avec la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, en recoupant de nombreux \u00e9v\u00e9nements historiques (o\u00f9 Assayas ins\u00e8re notamment quelques images d\u2019archives). Les d\u00e9cors, pourtant contraints par un budget limit\u00e9 et une impossibilit\u00e9 de tourner en Russie, fonctionnent remarquablement et installent une cr\u00e9dibilit\u00e9 troublante sur pr\u00e8s de trente ans d\u2019histoire. Film de fond beaucoup plus que de forme. Assayas adapte surtout l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re glaciale du livre dans une mise en sc\u00e8ne volontairement sobre, \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re froide, aux longs plans, et voix-off &amp; flashbacks qui structurent un film tr\u00e8s bavard, davantage pr\u00e9occup\u00e9 par son propos que par son illustration spectaculaire.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25529 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5681.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5681.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5681-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5681-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5681-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>L\u2019interpr\u00e9tation des personnages constitue n\u00e9anmoins l\u2019une des grandes forces du film avec un Paul Dano au jeu volontairement passif : son Baranov semble inchang\u00e9 du d\u00e9but \u00e0 la fin, le m\u00eame visage ing\u00e9nu traversant l\u2019\u00e9volution d\u2019un monde qui se referme, entre assurance et fragilit\u00e9. Et c\u2019est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment cette non-\u00e9volution du jeu de ses d\u00e9buts un peu perdu dans le monde de l\u2019art \u00e0 son apog\u00e9e, parfaitement \u00e0 l\u2019aise sur l\u2019\u00e9chiquier politique, qui rend son personnage gla\u00e7ant. Jude Law, dans le r\u00f4le p\u00e9rilleux du Tsar, ne dispara\u00eet jamais derri\u00e8re Poutine mais rentre dans la peau de son personnage, de sa gestuelle, sa posture, ses silences et ses \u00e9clairs pour proposer une incarnation cr\u00e9dible de l\u2019homme le plus craint de la pi\u00e8ce. Et enfin, Alicia Vikander affiche une libert\u00e9 dangereuse en v\u00e9ritable reflet de l\u2019\u00e9chec personnel et sentimental du narrateur.<\/p><p>Racont\u00e9e sous l\u2019\u0153il de ce conseiller, la succession d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements historiques auxquels on assiste, n\u2019en demeure donc qu\u2019une interpr\u00e9tation de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, par un personnage habitu\u00e9 \u00e0 mentir \u2013 qui plus est, fictif \u2013 et qui s\u2019adresse tout particuli\u00e8rement dans cette confession aux lecteurs, spectateurs et citoyens occidentaux sp\u00e9cifiquement. \u00ab Le Mage du Kremlin \u00bb interroge (certes moins que le livre) ainsi la fascination du pouvoir dans une lecture historique et th\u00e9orique fondamentalement biais\u00e9e et ambigu\u00eb. Si le discours russe sonne juste, il d\u00e9livre en un sens le message que le pouvoir russe cherche justement \u00e0 nous d\u00e9livrer, et s\u2019inscrit ainsi dans la strat\u00e9gie de communication du Kremlin. Non pas dans le cadre d\u2019une \u0153uvre de propagande, mais plut\u00f4t d\u2019une \u0153uvre de fiction occidentale interrogeant son auditoire en renversant les r\u00f4les. The story follows the career of Vadim Baranov, a fictional character inspired by Vladislav Surkov, Vladimir Putin&rsquo;s former political advisor, through a long confession that acts as the narrative backbone. An atypical figure from the world of culture and art, Baranov narrates in the first person his rise to the heart of Russian power, from the 1990s to the establishment of a vertical authoritarian regime in which he theorizes the concept of \u201csovereign democracy.\u201d Responsible for staging power, he sees politics as a permanent theater, based on blurring the lines between truth and falsehood, opposition and domination. Governing through the monopoly of subversion, through uncertainty. Turning criticism itself into a tool of power, leaving opponents (the most vocal ones) on stage to better use them (and cement one&rsquo;s popularity). Baranov views domestic and international political theater as the culmination of his career as an artist. Trump&rsquo;s ultimate goal at the moment is, in fact, to spread chaos and instability in blue states where everything was perfectly calm and peaceful and among the least affected by economic, social, security, or health crises. Driven by a certain sense of humiliation, this political ideology brings the balance of power back to the frontline, through anything that can be perceived as or resemble strength, and uses large-scale manipulation not to create divisions but to exploit those already there in any society: pitting opinions, anger, and divides, \u201ctwisting in one direction and then the other\u201d &#8230;<\/p><p>Opening the doors to this obscure world and offering an interesting reflection on the dynamics of contemporary power, \u201cThe Wizard of the Kremlin\u201d stands out as a particularly faithful adaptation of the book, which often borders on reality, even crossing paths with certain unique supporting characters such as Limonov and Prigozhin. Nevertheless, Olivier Assayas relegates to the background the perpetual verticality of Russian power and the cyclical dimension of tsarism through the three generations of Baranov (grandfather and imperial Russia, father and Soviet Russia, and narrator contemporary with Vladimir Vladimirovich). Above all, he opts for a different ending, adding a d\u00e9nouement to this fictional-realistic demonstration.<\/p><p>This utmost faithfulness lends the film a visual reconstruction dimension, constantly playing with reality by intersecting numerous historical events (where Assayas inserts some archival footage). The sets, despite being constrained by a limited budget and the impossibility of filming in Russia, work remarkably well and lend a disturbing credibility to nearly thirty years of history. This is a film that focuses much more on substance than style. Above all, Assayas adapts the book&rsquo;s chilling atmosphere with deliberately sober staging, cold lighting, long shots, voice-overs, and flashbacks that structure a very dialogue-heavy movie, more concerned with its message than with spectacular visuals.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25529 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5681.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5681.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5681-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5681-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5681-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>The portrayal of the characters is nevertheless one of the film&rsquo;s great strengths, with Paul Dano deliberately playing a passive role: his Baranov seems unchanged from beginning to end, the same naive face navigating the evolution of a world that is closing in on itself, between confidence and fragility. And it is precisely this lack of evolution in his performance, from his somewhat lost beginnings in the art world to his prime, perfectly at ease on the political stage, that makes his character so chilling. Jude Law, in the perilous role of the Tsar, never disappears into Putin but slips into the skin of his character, his gestures, his posture, his silences and his flashes of anger to offer a credible embodiment of the most feared man in the room. And finally, Alicia Vikander displays a dangerous freedom that truly reflects the narrator&rsquo;s personal and emotional failure.<\/p><p>Told through the eyes of this advisor, the succession of historical events we witness remains nothing more than an interpretation of reality by a character accustomed to lying \u2013 and, moreover, a fictional one \u2013 who addresses Western readers, viewers, and citizens specifically in this confession. \u201cThe Wizard of the Kremlin\u201d therefore questions (albeit to a lesser extent than the book) the fascination with power in a fundamentally biased and ambiguous historical and theoretical perspective. While the Russian discourse rings true, in a sense it delivers the message that the Russian government is seeking to convey to us, and is thus part of the Kremlin&rsquo;s communication strategy. Not in the context of a propaganda piece, but rather a work of Western fiction that questions its audience by reversing roles. By blurring the line between reality and fiction, it does not tell us \u201call these facts are true\u201d but rather \u201cwhat do you make of this reality?\u201d.<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
