Il fait sombre dehors. Il fait froid aussi, dans ce manteau de neige qui emmitoufle la for\u00eat. Dans le noir, un rudimentaire convoi grimpe cependant sans rel\u00e2che pour atteindre un hameau perch\u00e9 au milieu des immensit\u00e9s rocheuses des Hautes-Alpes. Parmi cette caravane des hauteurs, une jeune femme, dont on d\u00e9couvre plus tard qu\u2019elle est institutrice, pr\u00eate \u00e0 enseigner et transmettre avec ferveur les valeurs de la IIIe R\u00e9publique. Elle ne sait pas encore que son bapt\u00eame de glace sera plus ardu qu\u2019anticip\u00e9\u2026<\/p><p>\u00ab L\u2019Engloutie \u00bb, voil\u00e0 un titre intrigant, myst\u00e9rieux, \u00e0 la limite de l\u2019\u00e9sot\u00e9rique, que porte le premier long-m\u00e9trage de Louise H\u00e9mon. Mais ce film pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 en avant-premi\u00e8re au Festival Effervescence de M\u00e2con, l\u2019est de fait tout autant. D\u2019abord visuellement : la photographie, elle-m\u00eame volontairement n\u00e9buleuse et sign\u00e9e Marie Atlan, joue des stup\u00e9fiants contrastes entre les int\u00e9rieurs exigus (o\u00f9 se d\u00e9voile un clair-obscur illumin\u00e9 par de tr\u00e8s faibles lueurs d\u2019\u00e2tres et de bougies) et les ext\u00e9rieurs paradoxalement \u00e9touffants (o\u00f9 le blanc immacul\u00e9 des pentes se heurte aux flancs rocheux des montagnes immuables), le tout dans un format 4\/3 qui resserre l\u2019image autour de ses personnages in\u00e9luctablement engouffr\u00e9s dans la verticalit\u00e9 des paysages. La musique aussi, tr\u00e8s singuli\u00e8re et compos\u00e9e par \u00c9mile Sornin, vient ponctuer \u00e0 sa fa\u00e7on des s\u00e9quences o\u00f9 le souffle autant que le silence ont leur place dans cet univers surr\u00e9el.<\/p><p>\u00c0 l\u2019inverse par ailleurs de l\u2019\u00e0 premi\u00e8re vue similaire \u00ab Vermiglio ou la Mari\u00e9e des Montagnes \u00bb de Maura Delpero, \u00ab L\u2019Engloutie \u00bb constitue non seulement une chronique de la vie alpine de l\u2019\u00e9poque, mais n\u2019h\u00e9site pas \u00e0 jouer avec notre imaginaire \u00e0 travers les fantasmes et illusions de notre h\u00e9ro\u00efne nomm\u00e9e Aim\u00e9e et incarn\u00e9e par Galatea Bellugi. Parce que certes, plusieurs sc\u00e8nes sont inspir\u00e9es d\u2019anecdotes et d\u2019\u00e9crits (anthropologiques comme romanc\u00e9s) des propres anc\u00eatres de la r\u00e9alisatrice (issue d\u2019une lign\u00e9e d\u2019institutrices et instituteurs), mais la perte de rep\u00e8res qu\u2019\u00e9prouve le personnage d\u2019Aim\u00e9e nourrit tout un champ d\u2019affabulations tel un conte. Ne connaissant par exemple pas l\u2019occitan ni les us et coutumes locales, l\u2019institutrice se voit apprendre de surcro\u00eet de nouveaux langages, comme celui, ardent, du d\u00e9sir et m\u00eame celui, tellurique, de la montagne. It is dark outside. It is also cold, with snow blanketing the forest. In the darkness, however, a makeshift convoy climbs relentlessly to reach a village nestled amid the rocky vastness of the Hautes-Alpes. Among this high-altitude caravan is a young woman, later revealed to be a schoolteacher, eager to teach and fervently spread the values of the Third Republic. She does not yet know that her trial by ice will be more difficult than anticipated&#8230;<\/p><p>\u201cThe Girl in the Snow\u201d is an intriguing, mysterious, almost esoteric title for Louise H\u00e9mon&rsquo;s first feature film. And this film is just as intriguing and mysterious. Firstly, visually: the cinematography, deliberately hazy and shot by Marie Atlan, plays on the striking contrasts between the cramped interiors (where a chiaroscuro effect is created by the faint glow of fireplaces and candles) and the paradoxically stifling exteriors (where the immaculate white of the slopes collides with the rocky flanks of the immutable mountains), all in a 1:333 aspect ratio that tightens the image around its characters, inevitably engulfed in the verticality of the landscapes. The music, too, very distinctive and composed by \u00c9mile Sornin, punctuates in its own way sequences where both breath and silence have their place in this surreal universe.<\/p><p>Unlike Maura Delpero&rsquo;s seemingly similar \u201cVermiglio\u201d, \u201cThe Girl in the snow\u201d is not only a chronicle of Alpine life at the time, but also plays with our imagination through the fantasies and illusions of our heroine, Aim\u00e9e, played by Galatea Bellugi. While several scenes are inspired by stories and writings (both anthropological and fictional) from the director&rsquo;s own ancestors (who came from a long line of teachers), Aim\u00e9e&rsquo;s loss of bearings fuels a whole range of fairy-tale-like fabrications. For example, unfamiliar with Occitan and local customs, the teacher finds herself learning new languages, such as the ardent language of desire and even the earthy language of the mountains. With her certainties shaken in an inhospitable environment, Aim\u00e9e is gradually overwhelmed, as much by this cold community as by her ideals vanishing into thin air, by her awakened sexuality as by these longed-for snowstorms.<\/p><p>Axel
