C\u2019est par ces termes que Bi Gan, r\u00e9alisateur de \u00ab R\u00e9surrection \u00bb, qualifie indirectement son dernier long-m\u00e9trage, massif et impressionnant. Difficile de d\u00e9crire en un seul mot ce film tant il est riche, dense et frappant, mais nous allons t\u00e2cher de d\u00e9velopper.<\/p><p>Intitul\u00e9 \u00ab Les Temps Forts \u00bb en mandarin, \u00ab R\u00e9surrection \u00bb narre en cinq \u00e9pisodes la travers\u00e9e du XX<sup>e <\/sup>si\u00e8cle par un personnage plusieurs fois r\u00e9incarn\u00e9 \u00e0 des \u00e9poques diff\u00e9rentes. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un \u00ab R\u00eavoleur \u00bb, l\u2019un des rares \u00eatres humains encore capables de vivre presque \u00e9ternellement gr\u00e2ce aux r\u00eaves qu\u2019ils font. Mais une femme, charg\u00e9e de consigner ces R\u00eavoleurs, retrouve ce \u00ab monstre cin\u00e9matographique \u00bb au seuil du tr\u00e9pas et cherche \u00e0 comprendre les r\u00eaves de ce dernier avant qu\u2019il ne disparaisse.<\/p><p>Plus qu\u2019un tableau de la Chine continentale du si\u00e8cle pass\u00e9, \u00ab R\u00e9surrection \u00bb est un portrait de ces cents derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es dans ce qui est aujourd\u2019hui la R\u00e9publique Populaire de Chine ; nuance subtile, certes. \u00c0 travers une fresque envo\u00fbtante compos\u00e9e de cinq majeures et toutes magistrales s\u00e9quences, le film esquisse les constances et les basculements tant philosophiques qu\u2019existentiels d\u2019un si\u00e8cle entier dans un territoire \u00e0 l\u2019histoire immense.<\/p><p>Concr\u00e8tement, chaque section du film d\u00e9crit une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 le R\u00eavoleur para\u00eet perdre l\u2019un de ses cinq sens : la vue, l\u2019ou\u00efe, le go\u00fbt, l\u2019odorat puis le toucher. Pour la vue, c\u2019est l\u2019effervescence de la jeune et fragile R\u00e9publique de Chine post-imp\u00e9riale, dans les ann\u00e9es 1910-1920. Pour l\u2019ou\u00efe, c\u2019est l\u2019inqui\u00e9tude grandissante suscit\u00e9e par la guerre civile et l\u2019invasion japonaise, dans les ann\u00e9es 1930-1930. Pour le go\u00fbt, c\u2019est le sentiment d\u2019absurdit\u00e9 d\u00e9clench\u00e9 par le Grand bond en avant puis la R\u00e9volution culturelle, dans les ann\u00e9es 1960-1970. Pour l\u2019odorat, c\u2019est l\u2019arriv\u00e9e fracassante du capitalisme sous les r\u00e9formes \u00e9conomiques de Deng Xiaoping, dans les ann\u00e9es 1980. La premi\u00e8re s\u00e9quence est ainsi un magnifique hommage aux d\u00e9buts du cin\u00e9ma muet, tandis que la derni\u00e8re s\u00e9quence t\u00e9moigne d\u2019une ma\u00eetrise absolue du plan-s\u00e9quence. Bourr\u00e9 de d\u00e9tails et de r\u00e9f\u00e9rences en tous genres le tout dans une structure \u00e0 la fois claire et n\u00e9buleuse, \u00ab R\u00e9surrection \u00bb appara\u00eet comme tr\u00e8s conceptuel sur le plan narratif, mais il \u00e9merveille toujours quelqu\u2019un pour telle ou telle prouesse cin\u00e9matographique, la musique onirique de M83 accompagnant le public dans cette sublime et dr\u00f4le de r\u00eaverie. That&rsquo;s how Bi Gan, director of \u201cResurrection,\u201d summed up his latest feature film, which is massive and impressive. It&rsquo;s hard to describe this film in just one word because it is so rich, dense, and striking, but we&rsquo;ll do our best to elaborate.<\/p><p>Titled \u201cWild Times\u201d in Mandarin, \u201cResurrection\u201d chronicles in five episodes the journey through the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century of a character who has been reincarnated several times in different eras. He is a \u201cDeliriant,\u201d one of the few human beings still capable of living almost eternally thanks to the dreams they have. But a woman, tasked with seeking out these Deliriants, finds this \u201ccinematic monster\u201d on the verge of death and seeks to understand his dreams before he disappears.<\/p><p>More than a picture of mainland China in the last century, \u201cResurrection\u201d is a portrait of the last hundred years in what is now the People&rsquo;s Republic of China; a subtle nuance, to be sure. Through a spellbinding epic divided into five main and masterful sequences, the film captures the philosophical and existential constants and upheavals of an entire century in a land of vast proportions.<\/p><p>In essence, each section of the film depicts a period in which the Deliriant appears to lose one of his five senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. For sight, it is the bustle of the young and fragile post-imperial Republic of China in the 1910s and 1920s. For hearing, it is the growing anxiety caused by the civil war and the Japanese invasion in the 1930s. For taste, it is the feeling of absurdity triggered by the Great Leap Forward and then the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s. For smell, it is the dramatic arrival of capitalism under Deng Xiaoping&rsquo;s economic reforms in the 1980s. The first sequence is thus a magnificent tribute to the early days of silent film, while the last sequence demonstrates absolute mastery of the long uncut take. Packed with details and references of all kinds, all within a structure that is at once clear and nebulous, \u201cResurrection\u201d appears to be highly conceptual in terms of narrative, but it never fails to amaze with its cinematic brilliance, while the dreamlike score by M83 takes the audience on a sublime and amusing journey of reverie.
