Comment un mot si court et si simple peut-il cacher l\u2019immense complexit\u00e9 d\u2019une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 aussi d\u00e9chir\u00e9e que celle qui peuple l\u2019\u00c9tat d\u2019Isra\u00ebl, dans un contexte g\u00e9opolitique mondial o\u00f9 l\u2019image de ce pays est consid\u00e9rablement et violemment controvers\u00e9e, tant en dehors qu\u2019au sein de ce petit territoire ? C\u2019est \u00e0 cette question \u00e9minemment politique que s\u2019attaque le r\u00e9alisateur Nadav Lapid, pris en \u00e9tau entre un appel international au boycott d\u2019Isra\u00ebl et une prise de position qui lui a attir\u00e9 les foudres d\u2019un gouvernement en guerre et ultra-nationaliste.<\/p><p>\u00c9crit initialement avant le massacre du 7 octobre 2023, le cinqui\u00e8me long-m\u00e9trage du r\u00e9alisateur isra\u00e9lien vivant d\u00e9sormais en France a d\u00fb faire face, comme le reste du monde, aux \u00e9v\u00e8nements abominables qui se sont perp\u00e9tr\u00e9s depuis cette date. Ironie sordide de l\u2019histoire, le cin\u00e9aste, qui a tout de m\u00eame longuement r\u00e9fl\u00e9chi sur la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de produire ce film, n\u2019a eu qu\u2019\u00e0 r\u00e9\u00e9crire certains \u00e9l\u00e9ments de son sc\u00e9nario pour qu\u2019il colle \u00e0 l\u2019actualit\u00e9 horriblement r\u00e9elle du Proche-Orient. Or, \u00ab Oui \u00bb n\u2019est pas un documentaire : c\u2019est un portrait saisissant de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 isra\u00e9lienne, miroir dans lequel nombre d\u2019Isra\u00e9liennes et Isra\u00e9liens ne peuvent se regarder.<\/p><p>Mais quel est le synopsis de ce film ? C\u2019est l\u2019histoire de Y. (prononcez \u00ab Youd \u00bb), musicien-troubadour attitr\u00e9 de la haute soci\u00e9t\u00e9 isra\u00e9lienne avec sa femme danseuse Yasmine, \u00e0 qui l\u2019on va proposer d\u2019\u00e9crire un nouvel hymne patriotique \u00e0 la gloire de la victoire [hypoth\u00e9tique] d\u2019Isra\u00ebl dans sa guerre contre l\u2019ennemi. Et bien s\u00fbr cela va poser question.<\/p><p>Cependant, si le sujet est d\u00e9j\u00e0 frappant, la fa\u00e7on dont il est expos\u00e9 l\u2019est d\u2019autant plus. Divis\u00e9 en trois chapitres de taille in\u00e9gale (\u00ab La Belle Vie \u00bb, \u00ab Le Chemin \u00bb, \u00ab La Nuit \u00bb), \u00ab Oui \u00bb d\u00e9bute par une s\u00e9quence outranci\u00e8re qui donne tout de suite, semble-t-il, le ton extravagant voire obsc\u00e8ne du long-m\u00e9trage. Il n\u2019en est n\u00e9anmoins rien, puisque beaucoup de choses se passent en deux heures et demie de film.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25056 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Snapshot_5281.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" \/><\/p><p>Y. et Yasmine, d\u2019abord explicitement d\u00e9peints en extravertis bouffons des rois, sont ainsi peu \u00e0 peu pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s sous un angle plus s\u00e9rieux. Leur temp\u00e9rament \u2013 en particulier celui de Y. \u2013 fougueux, spontan\u00e9 et un brin <em>chtarb\u00e9<\/em> laisse progressivement le champ libre \u00e0 des introspections plus terre-\u00e0-terre puis profondes. Ils sont par exemple des parents aimants, inquiets du sort de leur jeune fils \u2013 n\u00e9 d\u2019ailleurs le lendemain du massacre \u2013 et au regard de leurs m\u00e9tiers et relations, se posent des questions sur l\u2019avenir et surtout la place de leur famille.<\/p><p>Mais \u00ab Oui \u00bb, \u00e0 l\u2019instar de son personnage phare de Y., constitue aussi un long-m\u00e9trage incroyablement vif et cr\u00e9atif. La mise en sc\u00e8ne \u2013 que d\u2019aucuns pourraient juger peu raffin\u00e9e \u2013 comprend une s\u00e9rie de petites folies qui font sourire quoiqu\u2019interpellent (des l\u00e9gers effets sp\u00e9ciaux \u00e7\u00e0 et l\u00e0, des danses de cam\u00e9ras, un brisement brutal du quatri\u00e8me mur), mais aussi de grandes folies qui cette fois-ci marquent voire heurtent (des symboliques fortes pour transmettre des messages politiques, la vid\u00e9o r\u00e9elle d\u2019une chanson de propagande, un hors-champ relevant une dichotomie effrayante entre une action et son lieu).<\/p><p>M\u00eame chose pour les s\u00e9quences et sc\u00e8nes qui, pour la plupart, t\u00e9moignent d\u2019une certaine personnalit\u00e9 voire prise de position du r\u00e9alisateur sur les sujets qu\u2019il traite. De d\u00e9cal\u00e9e et d\u00e9cadente (les diff\u00e9rentes f\u00eates, la pluie de pierres), le film passe par une ambiance plus po\u00e9tique et insouciante (les \u00e9chapp\u00e9es en ville et dans le d\u00e9sert, le jeu du piano \u00e0 deux) pour finalement troubler avec des situations clairement plus pesantes et \u00e9prouvantes (le monologue de la voiture, le baiser sur la colline).<\/p><p>Cette diversit\u00e9 et ces nombreux changements de registres \u2013 incarn\u00e9s par des actrices et acteurs qui cr\u00e8vent l\u2019\u00e9cran (Ariel Bronz pour Y., Efrat Dor pour Yasmine, Naama Preis pour Leah, Alexe\u00ef Serebriakov pour le milliardaire, et d\u2019autres encore) \u2013 d\u00e9range. Et c\u2019est le but. Car malgr\u00e9 un ton ouvertement satirique, \u00ab Oui \u00bb, demeure une histoire tragiquement r\u00e9elle d\u2019aveuglement. (et, dans une moindre mesure, Yasmine), c\u2019est avant tout un personnage qui s\u2019est perdu dans des choix qu\u2019il n\u2019a pas toujours faits en \u00e9tant conscient des cons\u00e9quences. Il regrette ainsi certains actes mais en commet d\u2019autres totalement absurdes dans l\u2019optique de s\u2019oublier, d\u2019oublier sa famille, d\u2019oublier sa vie, d\u2019oublier son pays. Pour Y., dire oui, c\u2019est accepter de se soumettre, et donc d\u2019\u00eatre libre dans cette soumission. Mais \u00e0 force de dire oui \u00e0 tout, l\u2019on finit par se travestir, par se prostituer, par oblit\u00e9rer ce qui pourtant se passe sous sa fen\u00eatre : un enfant qui grandit tout en ignorant, une corruption qui pourrit les \u00e2mes et les gens, une asym\u00e9trique guerre g\u00e9nocidaire qui \u00e9cume des vies quotidiennement.<\/p><p>Souffrant, d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9, d\u2019une v\u00e9h\u00e9mente et officielle opposition du gouvernement isra\u00e9lien (et de leurs soutiens), d\u2019un autre, d\u2019un boycott et\/ou d\u2019une censure anti-isra\u00e9lienne dans nombre de pays, \u00ab Oui \u00bb tranche certes nettement au regard de son positionnement vis-\u00e0-vis de l\u2019abominable et atroce conflit qui meurtrit chaque jour et depuis des d\u00e9cennies le Proche-Orient. Mais, sans r\u00e9volutionner fondamentalement le septi\u00e8me art, le long-m\u00e9trage rompt aussi avec une forme de cin\u00e9ma quelquefois trop l\u00e9ch\u00e9, tant sur la forme que sur le fond. L\u2019on ne peut et ne doit pas par ailleurs le r\u00e9duire \u00e0 sa nationalit\u00e9, \u00e0 sa couleur politique ou \u00e0 son sujet, parce que \u00ab Oui \u00bb soul\u00e8ve des r\u00e9flexions existentielles et philosophiques plus pouss\u00e9es sur la question de l\u2019exil, triste leitmotiv de la religion juive et plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement de l\u2019histoire humaine. Le film d\u00e9nonce par cons\u00e9quent autant qu\u2019il d\u00e9plore l\u2019\u00e9tat actuel des choses, alors qu\u2019un simple mot de trois ou deux lettres (N-O-N \/ \u05dc-\u05d0) pourrait parfois changer la face du monde. How can such a short and simple word capture the immense complexity of a society as divided as that of the State of Israel, in a global geopolitical landscape where the country&rsquo;s image is highly and violently controversial, both outside and within this small territory? This eminently political question is tackled by director Nadav Lapid, caught between an international call for a boycott of Israel and a stance that has drawn the wrath of a warring and ultra-nationalist government.<\/p><p>Originally written before the massacre of October 7, 2023, the fifth feature by the Israeli director now living in France had to deal, like the rest of the world, with the horrific events that have taken place since that date. In a cruel twist of fate, the filmmaker, who had long reflected on the necessity of producing this film, only had to rewrite a few parts of his script to make it fit with the horribly real events unfolding in the Middle East. However, \u201cYes\u201d is not a documentary: it is a striking portrait of Israeli society, a mirror in which many Israelis cannot see themselves.<\/p><p>But what is the plot of this film? This is the story of Y. (pronounced \u201cYoud\u201d), a musician and troubadour who is the official entertainer of Israeli high society, and his wife Yasmine, a dancer. They are asked to write a new patriotic anthem celebrating Israel&rsquo;s [hypothetical] victory in its war against the enemy. And of course, this is going to raise questions.<\/p><p>However, while the subject matter is already striking, the way it is depicted is even more so. Divided into three chapters of unequal length (\u2018The Good Life\u2019, \u2018The Path\u2019, \u2018The Night\u2019), \u201cYes\u201d begins with an outrageous sequence that immediately sets what appears to be the extravagant, even obscene tone of the film. However, this is not the case, as a lot happens in the two and a half hours of that movie.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25056 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Snapshot_5281.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" \/><\/p><p>Y. and Yasmine, initially portrayed explicitly as extroverted court jesters, are gradually presented in a more serious light. Their temperament \u2013 especially Y.&rsquo;s \u2013 fiery, spontaneous, and slightly crazy, gradually gives way to more down-to-earth and then profound introspection. For example, they are loving parents, concerned about the fate of their young son \u2013 born the day right after the massacre \u2013 and, given their jobs and relationships, they wonder about the future and, above all, the fate of their family.<\/p><p>But \u201cYes\u201d, like its main character Y., is also an incredibly lively and creative film. The direction \u2013 which some might consider a little crude \u2013 includes a series of little quirks that make you smile but also make you think (minor special effects here and there, camera dances, a sudden breaking of the fourth wall), but also some major eccentricities that this time make an impression or even shock (strong symbolism to convey political messages, real video footage of a propaganda song, an off-screen moment highlighting a frightening duality between an action and its location).<\/p><p>The same goes for the sequences and scenes, most of which reveal a certain personality or even stance on the part of the director regarding the subjects he tackles. From offbeat and decadent (the various parties, the rain of stones), the film moves on to a more poetic and light-hearted mood (the escapades in the city and the desert, the piano duet) before finally unsettling the viewer with clearly more heavy and distressing situations (the monologue in the car, the kiss on the hill).<\/p><p>This diversity and these numerous shifts in tone\u2014embodied by actors who light up the screen (Ariel Bronz as Y., Efrat Dor as Yasmine, Naama Preis as Leah, Alexei Serebriakov as the billionaire, and others)\u2014are unsettling. And that&rsquo;s the point. Because despite its openly satirical tone, \u201cYes\u201d remains a tragically real story of blindness. Blindness to oneself, to one&rsquo;s loved ones, to one&rsquo;s world.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25054 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Snapshot_5279.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Snapshot_5279.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Snapshot_5279-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Snapshot_5279-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Snapshot_5279-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Y. (and, to a lesser extent, Yasmine) is above all a character who has lost his way through choices he did not always make fully aware of the consequences. He regrets certain actions but commits others that are completely absurd in an attempt to forget himself, his family, his life, and his country. For Y., saying yes means accepting to submit, and therefore to be free in that submission. But by saying yes to everything, you end up disguising yourself, prostituting yourself, obliterating what is happening right under your window: a child growing up in ignorance, corruption rotting souls and people, an asymmetrical genocidal war that takes lives every day.<\/p><p>Facing fierce and official opposition from the Israeli government (and its supporters) on the one hand, and anti-Israeli boycotts and\/or censorship in many countries on the other, \u201cYes\u201d certainly takes a clear stance on the appalling and atrocious conflict that has been ravaging the Middle East every day for decades. But without fundamentally revolutionizing the art of cinema, the movie also breaks with a type of filmmaking that is sometimes overly polished, both in style and substance. Furthermore, it cannot and should not be reduced to its nationality, political leanings, or subject matter, because \u201cYes\u201d raises more profound existential and philosophical reflections on the question of exile, a sad leitmotif of the Jewish religion and, more generally, of human history. The film therefore condemns and deplores the current state of affairs, when a simple two- or three-letter word (N-O \/ \u05dc-\u05d0) could sometimes change the face of the world. And yet, in this quest-escape that is exile, we have all already considered saying&#8230; yes.<\/p><p>Axel
