Qu\u2019en est-il donc de cette fin de cycle ? Les deux premiers suivaient une structure similaire, celui-ci reprend-il cette recette ou innove-t-il ? A chaque fois, les personnages \u00e9taient certes arch\u00e9typaux mais toujours bien \u00e9crits avec des propos et des prises de position toujours justifi\u00e9es. Le 3<sup>e<\/sup> poursuit-il cette qualit\u00e9\u00a0? S\u2019enfonce-t-il dans les st\u00e9r\u00e9otypes\u00a0? Ou approfondit-il des personnages nuanc\u00e9s\u00a0? Et qu\u2019en est-il de la question de la croyance \/ de la foi envers la divinit\u00e9 plan\u00e9taire \u2013 un sujet moins abord\u00e9 dans le pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent volet\u00a0? L\u2019humour du premier est-il d\u2019ailleurs toujours pr\u00e9sent ou rentre-t-on dans une phase plus sombre et s\u00e9rieuse\u00a0? L\u00e0 o\u00f9 le premier \u00e9tait un r\u00e9cit d\u2019initiation doubl\u00e9 d\u2019un film de guerre anti-imp\u00e9rialisme, et le second un r\u00e9cit de famille doubl\u00e9 d\u2019un film de r\u00e9sistance inter-esp\u00e8ces, o\u00f9 nous emm\u00e8ne ce troisi\u00e8me volet\u00a0? Vers un r\u00e9cit d\u2019\u00e9mancipation et un film de guerre civile\u00a0? Qu\u2019apporte donc-t-il ? A la fois beaucoup et pas grand-chose\u00a0? La r\u00e9ponse est en effet plus nuanc\u00e9e que pr\u00e9vu \u2026<\/p><p><strong>La mise en sc\u00e8ne et l&rsquo;immersion visuelle<\/strong><\/p><p>Plus que son univers, ses personnages, ou ses th\u00e9matiques, le principal attrait de la franchise \u00ab\u00a0Avatar\u00a0\u00bb reste malgr\u00e9 tout sa promesse d\u2019un spectacle in\u00e9dit permis par une technologie novatrice. Or ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 tourn\u00e9 simultan\u00e9ment avec \u00ab\u00a0La Voie de l\u2019eau\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0De Feu et de Cendres\u00a0\u00bb est le premier volet de cette saga \u00e0 n\u2019avoir rien d\u2019in\u00e9dit en termes de progr\u00e8s technique. Le film reste un v\u00e9ritable voyage dans un ailleurs, et un grand spectacle visuel aux effets sp\u00e9ciaux \u00e0 la pointe de la technologie qui offrent un niveau de d\u00e9tails renversant dans les mouvements, les regards et les expressions faciales de personnages pourtant int\u00e9gralement num\u00e9riques. La claque immersive n\u2019est en effet pas aussi forte dans la mesure o\u00f9 le film v\u00e9hicule moins d\u2019imaginaire que les deux autres. Certes, il pr\u00e9sente de nouveaux d\u00e9cors et de nouveaux clans (les Messagers du Vent et le Peuple des Cendres) mais il ne les explore pas. Le film ne rejoue pas \u00e0 nouveau la carte de la d\u00e9couverte d\u2019un nouveau monde, et \u2013 ce qui peut s\u2019entendre pour une conclusion de trilogie \u2013 pr\u00e9f\u00e8re r\u00e9unir les \u00e9l\u00e9ments des deux pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents volets dans une intrigue qui relie de mani\u00e8re fluide les trois dimensions pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es : terre, mer, ciel. Malheureusement, le film choisit pour cela de revisiter certaines s\u00e9quences qui paraissent alors r\u00e9p\u00e9titives \u2013 aussi bien dans la mise en sc\u00e8ne que l\u2019encha\u00eenement des kidnappings, lib\u00e9rations, affrontements \u2013 rendant l\u2019ensemble un peu trop long, ce que les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents \u00e9vitaient toujours malgr\u00e9 leur dur\u00e9e, et alors m\u00eame que ce troisi\u00e8me opus est le plus riche en action. C\u2019est pourquoi la bataille finale appara\u00eet finalement moins m\u00e9morable que d\u2019autres combats de moindre importance narrative mais plus novateurs comme celui dans les airs ou dans une base militaire sorte de ville-raffinerie qui donne \u00e0 voir le c\u00f4t\u00e9 sombre et m\u00e9tallique de cette nouvelle humanit\u00e9. En somme, Cameron rend malheureusement son univers imaginaire trop familier pour que le spectacle transmette la m\u00eame magie que les deux autres volets. Or, l\u2019exploration et l\u2019\u00e9merveillement qui va avec, \u00e9tant moins pr\u00e9sent cette fois-ci, le r\u00e9cit prend alors plus de place et d\u2019importance dans le film.<\/p><p><strong>Le r\u00e9cit, ses th\u00e9matiques universelles et ses id\u00e9es novatrices<\/strong><\/p><p>Pandora n\u2019est pas seulement un spectaculaire d\u00e9cor naturel, c\u2019est aussi un monde r\u00e9gi par des croyances et des rites anciens et peupl\u00e9 de figures arch\u00e9typales. C\u2019est une histoire \u00e0 port\u00e9e universelle qui s\u2019inscrit dans une tradition mythologique assum\u00e9e qui d\u00e9veloppe un r\u00e9cit fondateur hom\u00e9rique o\u00f9 les th\u00e8mes de filiation, de transmission, de sacrifice et de r\u00e9conciliation s\u2019entrelacent. Cet aboutissement du premier cycle d\u2019Avatar d\u00e9veloppe ainsi des conflits moraux plus ambigus et accorde une vraie attention \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9volution de ses personnages. Son point de d\u00e9part, au lendemain de la tragique conclusion du pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent volet, est ainsi passionnant en s\u2019attaquant aux diff\u00e9rents chemins que prend la famille Sully dans son deuil \u00e0 travers divers r\u00e9actions et comportements imparfaits. \u00ab\u00a0De Feu et de Cendres\u00a0\u00bb amplifie donc les th\u00e9matiques des deux premiers volets en y insufflant une certaine noirceur et une col\u00e8re partag\u00e9e. Il confronte les dilemmes qui hantent Jake, la haine raciste \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard des humains qui d\u00e9vore Neytiri suite \u00e0 la mort de son enfant, la culpabilit\u00e9 doubl\u00e9e d\u2019un sentiment de rejet que traverse Lo\u2019ak, et la transformation d\u2019un Quaritch qui gagne en complexit\u00e9, tiraill\u00e9 entre sa condition d\u2019arme humaine et une identit\u00e9 qui le d\u00e9passe. Le film ajoute ainsi de la profondeur \u00e0 ses personnages tout en continuant \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper l\u2019univers, notamment \u00e0 travers une nouvelle m\u00e9chante, rivale efficace de la m\u00e8re Sully, qui ajoute une boucle au cercle de pertes et de traumatismes qui alimente le feu de la haine dans ce r\u00e9cit. C\u2019est quand m\u00eame un blockbuster qui explore la x\u00e9nophobie d\u2019une de ses protagonistes \u00e0 travers la honte de sa diff\u00e9rence face \u00e0 leur repr\u00e9sentation du clan, c\u2019est un film qui met quand m\u00eame en sc\u00e8ne une tentative de suicide, et ouvre un audacieux d\u00e9bat sur le meurtre pr\u00e9m\u00e9dit\u00e9 d\u2019un enfant \u00e0 des fins plus grandes pour l\u2019esp\u00e8ce. Ce sont des choix de sc\u00e9nario bien plus os\u00e9s que dans le second opus. Mais malheureusement ces fortes id\u00e9es ne sont pas pleinement exploit\u00e9es, de m\u00eame que la trajectoire en miroir de Quaritch avec Jake, le poids de la croyance, ou l\u2019introduction de Na\u2019vis tellement d\u00e9connect\u00e9s de leur environnement qu\u2019ils en viennent \u00e0 devenir kamikazes, sans oublier une antagoniste (Oona Chaplin) qui d\u00e9gage une v\u00e9ritable f\u00e9rocit\u00e9 mais dont les intrigantes violence signifi\u00e9e et perte de foi sont r\u00e9duites \u00e0 un simple contexte. Symboliquement c\u2019est un sc\u00e9nario fort, mais dont le manque de subtilit\u00e9 et la structure du r\u00e9cit ne peuvent que g\u00e9n\u00e9rer de la frustration.<\/p><p><strong>Une frustration structurelle<\/strong><\/p><p>Et ce sentiment vient du fait que le r\u00e9cit est \u00e0 plusieurs reprises sur le point d\u2019embarquer dans une direction fondamentalement plus profonde ou int\u00e9ressante \u00e0 travers ces id\u00e9es novatrices, avant que les personnages ne renoncent ou soient emp\u00each\u00e9s de faire un choix crucial. En somme, le contexte vient toujours s\u2019interposer lorsque le rythme du film ralentit autour d\u2019un sujet \u00e0 explorer. Le r\u00e9cit ne fouille donc d\u2019une part pas assez ses bonnes id\u00e9es ou d\u2019autre part ne laisse pas assez respirer ses moments forts. Et au-del\u00e0 de certains dialogues relativement pauvres et d\u2019une trame assez m\u00e9canique, la narration cr\u00e9e \u00e9galement un l\u00e9ger d\u00e9calage dans le r\u00e9cit. Apr\u00e8s un premier film o\u00f9 la narration \u00e9tait assur\u00e9e de mani\u00e8re organique par le h\u00e9ros \u00e0 travers ses d\u00e9briefings pour la science, et un second o\u00f9 elle est toujours assur\u00e9e par le m\u00eame personnage en voix-off mais sous le point de vue familial, elle bascule sur l\u2019un de ses fils dans ce troisi\u00e8me opus. Or, certes c\u2019est un r\u00e9cit de transition entre les parents et la nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, mais l\u2019intrigue concerne encore, au moins \u00e0 part \u00e9gale, les adultes. So, what can we expect from the end of this cycle? The first two films followed a similar structure, so does this one follow the same formula or does it break new ground? In each case, the characters were undoubtedly archetypal, but they were always well written, with dialogue and positions that were always justified. Does the third installment carry on this quality? Or does it sink into stereotypes? Or does it delve deeper into nuanced characters? And what about the question of belief\/faith in the planetary deity \u2013 a subject less explored in the previous installment? Is the humor of the first film still alive, or are we entering a darker and more serious phase? Where the first film was an initiation story paired with an anti-imperialist war film, and the second was a family story paired with an inter-species resistance film, where does this third installment take us? Towards an emancipation story and a civil war film? What does it bring to the table? Both a lot and not much? The answer is indeed more nuanced than expected&#8230;<\/p><p>More than its universe, characters, or themes, the main appeal of the Avatar franchise remains its promise of an unprecedented spectacle enabled by innovative technology. However, having been filmed simultaneously with \u201cThe Way of Water,\u201d \u201cFire and Ash\u201d is the first installment in the saga that no longer feels unprecedented in terms of technical progress. The immersive impact is not as strong, as the film conveys less imagination than the other two. While it does introduce new settings and new clans (the Wind Traders and the Ash People), it fails to explore them. The film does not play the card of discovering a new world again and \u2013 which is understandable for the conclusion of a trilogy \u2013 instead brings together elements from the two previous installments in a plot that seamlessly connects the three dimensions depicted: sea, land, and sky. Unfortunately, it does so by revisiting certain sequences that seem repetitive \u2013 both in terms of staging and the succession of kidnappings, liberations, and confrontations \u2013 making the whole thing a little too long, something the previous films always avoided despite their running time, even though this third installment is the most action-packed. This is why the final battle ultimately seems less memorable than other battles of lesser narrative significance but of greater innovation, such as the one in the skies or in a military base resembling a refinery-city, which illustrates the dark and metallic side of this new humanity. In short, Cameron unfortunately makes his imaginary universe too familiar for the spectacle to convey the same magic as the other two films. However, with exploration and the wonder that goes with it less prominent this time around, the narrative takes on greater importance in the film.<\/p><p>Pandora is not only a spectacular natural setting, it is also a world governed by ancient beliefs and rituals and populated by archetypal figures. It is a universal story that draws on a well-established mythological tradition, developing a Homeric founding tale in which the themes of filiation, transmission, sacrifice, and reconciliation are intertwined. This conclusion to the first Avatar cycle thus develops more ambiguous moral conflicts and gives real attention to the evolution of its characters. Its starting point, in the aftermath of the tragic conclusion of the previous movie, is fascinating as it tackles the different paths taken by the Sully family in their grief through various flawed reactions and behaviors. \u201cFire and Ash\u201d therefore expands on the themes of the first two installments, infusing them with a certain darkness and collective anger. It confronts the dilemmas that haunt Jake, the racist hatred towards humans that consumes Neytiri following the death of her child, the guilt coupled with a feeling of rejection that Lo&rsquo;ak is going through, and the transformation of a Quaritch who is becoming more complex, torn between his status as a human weapon and an identity that transcends him. It is, after all, a blockbuster that explores the xenophobia of one of its protagonists through the shame of her difference from the rest of the clans she represents. It is, after all, a film that depicts a suicide attempt and opens up a challenging debate on the premeditated murder of a child for the greater good of the species. These are much bolder script choices than in the second installment. Unfortunately, these strong ideas are not fully explored, nor is Quaritch&rsquo;s mirrored trajectory with Jake, the weight of belief, or the introduction of Na&rsquo;vis so disconnected from their environment that they become kamikazes, not to mention an antagonist (Oona Chaplin) who exudes sheer ferocity but whose intriguing violence and loss of faith are reduced to mere context. Symbolically, it&rsquo;s a powerful script, but its lack of subtlety and narrative structure can only lead to frustration.<\/p><p>This feeling stems from the fact that the narrative repeatedly comes close to venturing in a fundamentally deeper or more interesting direction through these original ideas, before the characters give up or are prevented from taking a crucial decision. In essence, the context always gets in the way when the movie&rsquo;s pace slows down around a matter to be explored. The narrative therefore fails to delve deep enough into its good ideas or allow its strong moments to breathe. And beyond some relatively poor dialogue and a fairly formulaic plot, the narration also creates a slight disconnect in the story. After a first film in which the narration was provided in an organic way by the hero through his debriefings for science, and a second in which it is still provided by the same character but in voice-over and from the family&rsquo;s point of view, it switches to one of his sons in this third installment. Admittedly, this is a story of transition between the parents and the new generation, but the plot still focuses, at least equally, on the adults. A dual narrator in this installment, before focusing fully on the children, could potentially have avoided creating a disconnect between the film&rsquo;s protagonists and the real main characters of the plot.<\/p><p>Frustrating at first glance and not as awe-inspiring as its predecessors, this \u201cAvatar III\u201d remains a great family adventure that doesn&rsquo;t fully explore all its potential, but is fascinating enough in its father-son conflicts and fatherly duels to make you wish everyone a \u201cFeliz Na&rsquo;vi Dads\u201d!<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
