Du tr\u00e9pas sacrificiel d\u2019un animal (le plus souvent un bovin) naissent des essaims d\u2019abeilles. Le lien avec le dernier film de Y\u00f3rgos L\u00e1nthimos ? Plus qu\u2019un titre, vous le comprendrez. Le r\u00e9alisateur hell\u00e8ne revient ainsi avec un long-m\u00e9trage dans la veine de ses pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents : empli de loufoque mais loin, tr\u00e8s loin d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9nu\u00e9 de sens.<\/p><p>\u00ab Bugonia \u00bb repose en effet sur le concept d\u2019une th\u00e9orie du complot apparemment grotesque mais prodigieusement coh\u00e9rente o\u00f9, pour faire au plus simple, des extraterrestres originaires de la galaxie d\u2019Androm\u00e8de surveillent l\u2019esp\u00e8ce humaine depuis des mill\u00e9naires. C\u2019est \u00e0 cette conspiration que croit dur comme fer un certain Teddy Gatz qui, intimement persuad\u00e9 qu\u2019il s\u2019agit de la v\u00e9rit\u00e9, embarque avec lui son cousin Don dans l\u2019enl\u00e8vement et la s\u00e9questration de la tr\u00e8s influente PDG Michelle Fuller, soup\u00e7onn\u00e9e d\u2019\u00eatre une repr\u00e9sentante androm\u00e9dienne\u2026<\/p><p>Sans \u00eatre enti\u00e8rement un huis-clos, l\u2019intrigue se concentre principalement dans la maison isol\u00e9e de Teddy, o\u00f9 infuse toute la folie (ou le g\u00e9nie ?) de ce complotiste campagnard, esseul\u00e9 et malheureux, se d\u00e9pla\u00e7ant \u00e0 v\u00e9lo parce que sans voiture et s\u2019occupant de ses abeilles \u00e0 ses heures perdues. Avec lui vit Don, jeune adulte fragile et un peu paum\u00e9, embrigad\u00e9 malgr\u00e9 lui dans le complotisme effr\u00e9n\u00e9 de son cousin dont il est en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 sous l\u2019emprise. Il n\u2019y a de fait pas plus antagonistes, pas plus antipodiques que les personnages de Michelle et de Teddy, l\u2019une faisant partie de l\u2019\u00e9lite absolue d\u2019un establishment \u00e9conomique brutal, l\u2019autre faisant partie des marges recul\u00e9es d\u2019une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 dramatiquement victime d\u2019injustices. Et leurs \u00e9changes but\u00e9s et interactions violentes ne m\u00e8nent \u00e0 rien ou presque, m\u00eame en pr\u00e9sence de l\u2019arbitre bancal que joue sans le vouloir Don.<\/p><p>\u00ab Bugonia \u00bb brasse et d\u00e9nonce par cons\u00e9quent une multitude de sujets d\u2019actualit\u00e9, \u00e0 commencer par l\u2019ultra-polarisation de l\u2019esp\u00e8ce humaine, de plus en plus divis\u00e9e en son sein. Mais par d\u2019\u00e9vocatrices symboliques, il y est aussi question d\u2019ufologisme n\u00e9o-religieux (les Androm\u00e9diens divinis\u00e9s) d\u2019\u00e9cologisme d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9 (les abeilles et leur d\u00e9clin), d\u2019anti-capitalisme impossible (l\u2019emploi pr\u00e9caire de Teddy), de scepticisme anti-m\u00e9dical (l\u2019entreprise pharmaceutique de Michelle) de traumatismes personnels (l\u2019histoire familiale des Gatz), d\u2019in\u00e9galit\u00e9s sociales (l\u2019\u00e9cart abyssal de moyens entre Michelle et Teddy) voire m\u00eame de sexisme (les cheveux ras\u00e9s de Michelle) et d\u2019autres dossiers encore tels que le handicap de Don.<\/p><p>Complet dans son fond, le long-m\u00e9trage l\u2019est peut-\u00eatre un peu moins dans sa forme (notamment pour ce qui est de la gestion moins enivrante des d\u00e9cors et des effets sp\u00e9ciaux), aussi en raison tout simplement de sa structure \u2013 si bien qu\u2019il aurait tr\u00e8s bien pu faire un quatri\u00e8me moyen-m\u00e9trage \u00e0 \u00ab Kinds of Kindness \u00bb. N\u00e9anmoins, ce regret tr\u00e8s secondaire est combl\u00e9 par une fin renversante qui ne manquera pas de nous faire poser d\u2019autres questions encore sur ce qu\u2019est la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 de cette histoire, voire de notre univers. Ce dernier ne serait-il pas d\u2019ailleurs totalement artificiel au regard de la nature sans doute fondamentalement artificielle de l\u2019\u00eatre humain ? The sacrificial death of an animal (usually a cow) gives rise to swarms of bees. What does this have to do with Y\u00f3rgos L\u00e1nthimos&rsquo; latest film? More than just a title, as you will see. The Greek director returns with a movie along the lines of his previous ones: full of zaniness but far, very far, from meaningless.<\/p><p>\u201cBugonia\u201d is in fact built around the concept of a seemingly grotesque but remarkably coherent conspiracy theory in which, to put it simply, aliens from the Andromeda galaxy have been watching over the human race for thousands of years. This conspiracy is firmly believed by Teddy Gatz, who, convinced that it is the truth, enlists his cousin Don in the kidnapping of the highly influential CEO Michelle Fuller, suspected of being an Andromedan emissary.<\/p><p>Without being entirely confined to one location, the plot mainly takes place in Teddy&rsquo;s isolated house, where all the madness (or genius?) of this lonely and unhappy rural conspiracy theorist infuses the atmosphere. He gets around by bike because he doesn&rsquo;t have a car and spends his spare time tending to his bees. Living with him is Don, a fragile and somewhat lost young adult, unwittingly drawn into his cousin&rsquo;s frenzied conspiracy theories, under whose spell he actually finds himself. So when Teddy and Don take matters into their own hands, the quick-witted and intelligent Michelle does everything she can to convince them that she is not who they think she is.<\/p><p>The dialogues are written with sophisticated precision, since the cornerstone of the story lies in the speeches and counter-speeches, arguments and counter-arguments that send shivers down the spines of most people outside this socio-political-cognitive divide. There are, in fact, no characters more antagonistic or diametrically opposed than Michelle and Teddy, one belonging to the absolute elite of a brutal economic establishment, the other belonging to the remote margins of a society that is dramatically victimized by injustice. But through evocative symbolism, it also addresses neo-religious ufology (the deified Andromedans), desperate environmentalism (bees and their decline), impossible anti-capitalism (Teddy&rsquo;s precarious employment), anti-medical skepticism (Michelle&rsquo;s pharmaceutical company), personal trauma (the Gatz family history), social inequality (the huge gap between Michelle and Teddy&rsquo;s resources) and even sexism (Michelle&rsquo;s shaved head), as well as other issues such as Don&rsquo;s disability.<\/p><p>While thoroughly complete in substance, the film is perhaps less so in style (particularly in terms of the less impressive handling of sets and special effects), partly due to its structure \u2013 so much so that it could easily have been a fourth segment of \u201cKinds of Kindness\u201d. Nevertheless, this very minor regret is offset by a stunning ending that is sure to raise further questions about the truth of this story, and even of our universe. Could the latter be entirely artificial, given the fundamentally artificial nature of human beings? At least, that is what the conclusion of \u201cBugonia\u201d suggests, where a hypothetical sacrifice would give rise to a more magical world.<\/p><p>Axel
