Le plus grand bidonville d\u2019Europe se trouve au centre g\u00e9ographique de la p\u00e9ninsule ib\u00e9rique, \u00e0 quelques enc\u00e2blures \u00e0 peine du centre-ville de Madrid. Cette <em>chabola<\/em>, comme on dit en Espagne, c\u2019est la <em>Ca\u00f1ada Real<\/em>. \u00c9tal\u00e9e sur trois communes de l\u2019aire m\u00e9tropolitaine madril\u00e8ne, cette \u00e9tonnante \u00ab irr\u00e9gularit\u00e9 urbaine \u00bb, r\u00e9put\u00e9e m\u00e9diatiquement pour sa criminalit\u00e9 et son tentaculaire trafic de drogues dures, est pourtant largement m\u00e9connue \u2013 parce qu\u2019extr\u00eamement marginalis\u00e9e.<\/p><p>Et au regard de sa vie personnelle et artistique, le r\u00e9alisateur Guillermo Galoe ne pouvait pas faire l\u2019impasse sur cet environnement dans le cadre de son premier long-m\u00e9trage. \u00ab Ciudad Sin Sue\u00f1o \u00bb (litt\u00e9ralement \u00ab La Ville sans Sommeil \u00bb ou \u00ab La Ville sans R\u00eave \u00bb), c\u2019est le fruit de six ans de travail et de collaboration entre le natif de Madrid et une communaut\u00e9 vivant \u00e0 dix kilom\u00e8tres de chez le cin\u00e9aste. Apr\u00e8s avoir rencontr\u00e9 des familles [essentiellement] gitanes pour son premier court-m\u00e9trage \u00ab Aunque es de Noche \u00bb (\u00ab Malgr\u00e9 la Nuit \u00bb) salu\u00e9 \u00e0 Cannes et aur\u00e9ol\u00e9 d\u2019un Goya en 2023, le Madril\u00e8ne s\u2019est consid\u00e9rablement rapproch\u00e9 et m\u00eame li\u00e9 d\u2019amiti\u00e9 avec moult habitants de <em>la Ca\u00f1ada Real<\/em>. Lui est alors venue l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019\u00e9crire un second film avec eux, et non sur eux.<\/p><p>Voici donc l\u2019histoire de Toni, jeune gar\u00e7on rom dont l\u2019enfance s\u2019\u00e9vapore au cours d\u2019une nuit, dans un contexte o\u00f9 ses proches et sa famille se d\u00e9chirent sur le choix de rester ou de quitter un monde certes marginal mais aussi parfois porteur de r\u00eaveries. Sont alors boulevers\u00e9s ses rapports avec sa bien-aim\u00e9e chienne At\u00f3mica, son plus proche ami Bilal et jusqu\u2019ici son id\u00e9al pa\u00ef (grand-p\u00e8re). C\u2019est ainsi le r\u00e9cit d\u2019un lent et doux-amer basculement vers une autre r\u00e9alit\u00e9.<\/p><p>Incarn\u00e9s avec magie par des habitantes et habitants de <em>la Ca\u00f1ada Real<\/em>, tous les personnages \u2013 et en particulier celui de Toni \u2013 sont d\u2019une prestance et d\u2019une authenticit\u00e9 \u00e0 couper le souffle. Faut-il dire que \u00ab Ciudad Sin Sue\u00f1o \u00bb forme un d\u00e9licat et savoureux m\u00e9lange entre fiction et r\u00e9alit\u00e9, o\u00f9 l\u2019\u0153il du cin\u00e9aste transmet sans totalement romancer les \u00e9motions et la po\u00e9sie de ce monde \u00e0 part. Europe&rsquo;s largest slum is located in the geographical center of the Iberian Peninsula, just a few miles from downtown Madrid. This <em>chabola<\/em>, as it is known in Spain, is called <em>Ca\u00f1ada Real<\/em>. Spread across three municipalities in the Madrid metropolitan area, this astonishing \u2018urban irregularity\u2019, notorious in the media for its crime and sprawling hard drug trafficking, is nevertheless largely unknown \u2013 because it is extremely marginalized.<\/p><p>Given his personal and artistic background, director Guillermo Galoe couldn&rsquo;t ignore this place in his first feature film. \u201cCiudad Sin Sue\u00f1o\u201d (literally \u201cThe City Without Sleep\u201d or \u201cThe City Without Dreams\u201d) is the culmination of six years of work and collaboration between the Madrid native and a community living ten kilometers from the filmmaker\u2019s home. After meeting [mainly] gypsy families for his first short film, \u201cAunque es de Noche\u201d (\u201cDespite the Night\u201d), which was acclaimed at Cannes and won a Goya in 2023, the Madrilenian became very close and even befriended many residents of <em>La Ca\u00f1ada Real<\/em>. He then had the idea of writing a second film with them, rather than about them.<\/p><p>This is the story of Toni, a young Roma boy whose childhood evaporates overnight, in a context where his loved ones and family are torn between staying or leaving a world that is certainly marginal but also sometimes full of dreams. This upheaval affects his relationship with his beloved dog At\u00f3mica, his closest friend Bilal, and his idealized pa\u00ef (grandfather). It is the story of a slow and bittersweet shift towards another reality.<\/p><p>Magically embodied by the residents of <em>la Ca\u00f1ada Real<\/em>, all the characters \u2013 especially Toni \u2013 are breathtakingly authentic and commanding. It goes without saying that \u201cCiudad Sin Sue\u00f1o\u201d is a delicate and delightful blend of fiction and reality, in which the filmmaker&rsquo;s eye conveys the emotions and poetry of this unique world without romanticizing it. The film alternates between static, stark, almost documentary-style shots, more cinematic scenes, and footage shot on Toni&rsquo;s cell phone \u2013 where unlikely color filters invite us to take a much more whimsical, joyful, and childlike look at a world paradoxically filled with despair.<\/p><p>The feature film therefore paints a very different picture from what one might imagine of a slum, because social deprivation does not mean human or cultural deprivation. Despu\u00e9s de conocer a familias [principalmente] gitanas para su primer cortometraje \u00abAunque es de Noche\u00bb, aclamado en Cannes y galardonado con un Goya en 2023, el madrile\u00f1o se acerc\u00f3 considerablemente e incluso entabl\u00f3 amistad con muchos habitantes de la Ca\u00f1ada Real. Entonces se le ocurri\u00f3 la idea de escribir una segunda pel\u00edcula con ellos, y no sobre ellos.<\/p><p>Esta es la historia de Toni, un joven gitano cuya infancia se desvanece en una noche, en un contexto en el que sus allegados y su familia se debaten entre quedarse o abandonar un mundo ciertamente marginal, pero que a veces tambi\u00e9n es fuente de sue\u00f1os. Esto trastoca sus relaciones con su querida perra At\u00f3mica, su mejor amigo Bilal y, hasta ahora, su ideal pa\u00ef (abuelo). Es, pues, el relato de un lento y agridulce cambio hacia otra realidad.<\/p><p>Interpretados con magia por los habitantes de la Ca\u00f1ada Real, todos los personajes, y en particular el de Toni, tienen una presencia y una autenticidad impresionantes. Cabe decir que \u00abCiudad Sin Sue\u00f1o\u00bb es una delicada y sabrosa mezcla entre ficci\u00f3n y realidad, en la que la mirada del cineasta transmite, sin idealizarlo, las emociones y la poes\u00eda de este mundo aparte. As\u00ed se suceden planos fijos, secos, casi documentales, escenas m\u00e1s bien cinematogr\u00e1ficas y secuencias filmadas con el tel\u00e9fono m\u00f3vil por el propio Toni, en las que filtros de colores improbables nos invitan a posar una mirada mucho m\u00e1s fantasiosa, alegre e infantil sobre un universo parad\u00f3jicamente lleno de desesperaci\u00f3n.<\/p><p>Por lo tanto, el largometraje muestra una imagen muy diferente de lo que uno se imagina de un barrio marginal, porque la miseria social no significa miseria humana o cultural. Tambi\u00e9n en la Ca\u00f1ada Real hay historias y leyendas narradas en varios idiomas (castellano, cal\u00f3, \u00e1rabe, criollo[s]&#8230;), dramas y esperanzas que hacen vivir y sobrevivir a
