Apr\u00e8s avoir d\u00e9j\u00e0 r\u00e9alis\u00e9 un court-m\u00e9trage sur le travail pr\u00e9caire (The Shift), la cin\u00e9aste install\u00e9e au Royaume-Uni nous plonge dans un cauchemar de codes-barres qui r\u00e9v\u00e8le la face cach\u00e9e du n\u00e9olib\u00e9ralisme\u00a0: un travail r\u00e9p\u00e9titif et chronom\u00e9tr\u00e9 guid\u00e9 par les bips d\u2019une performance constamment \u00e9valu\u00e9e, compar\u00e9e et mise en concurrence pour \u00eatre optimis\u00e9e et ainsi booster une productivit\u00e9 dont les fruits \u00e9chappent aux travailleurs. Son film montre ainsi remarquablement l\u2019ali\u00e9nation de tels m\u00e9tiers, l\u2019infantilisation du management qui va avec, et la violence inflig\u00e9e aux humains qui subissent et font fonctionner un tel syst\u00e8me d\u00e9r\u00e9gul\u00e9.<\/p><p>Si \u00ab\u00a0On Falling\u00a0\u00bb peut donc s\u2019inscrire dans la veine des derni\u00e8res \u0153uvres de Ken Loach, ce n\u2019est pas seulement un film social car c\u2019est finalement moins un film sur cet emploi pr\u00e9caire-ci que sur la dimension psychologique et en particulier la solitude qu\u2019il entra\u00eene. C\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019une femme seule, d\u00e9plac\u00e9e, sans famille. Une immigr\u00e9e isol\u00e9e. Mais si la question de l\u2019immigration est \u00e9videmment centrale \u00e0 travers la colocation qu\u2019elle partage avec d\u2019autres travailleurs venus des quatre coins de l\u2019Europe, qu\u2019elle conna\u00eet \u00e0 peine, et avec qui elle n\u2019a que de brefs \u00e9changes dans une cuisine devenue l\u2019unique espace commun de son univers. C\u2019est plus la question du collectif dans ce syst\u00e8me \u00e9conomique qui est au c\u0153ur du sujet tant elle \u00e9volue aussi bien au travail qu\u2019\u00e0 la maison dans un grand univers collectif dont chaque membre est coinc\u00e9 dans sa propre bulle individuelle. La derni\u00e8re sc\u00e8ne illustre ainsi parfaitement le d\u00e9r\u00e8glement que n\u00e9cessite et implique ce syst\u00e8me pour favoriser et isoler les individualit\u00e9s dans ce collectif que repr\u00e9sente cet entrep\u00f4t monumental et froid o\u00f9 la protagoniste ne croise jamais le moindre coll\u00e8gue, n\u2019en conna\u00eet pas un seul et ne collabore jamais avec personne.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24157 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Snapshot_5039.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Snapshot_5039.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Snapshot_5039-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Snapshot_5039-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Snapshot_5039-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Chacun erre avec son chariot dans les all\u00e9es avec pour seul compagnon de route, son appareil-scanner de codes-barres rythmant sa cadence comp\u00e9titive. Et entre ces kilom\u00e8tres parcourus en hangar et les soir\u00e9es pass\u00e9es \u00e0 regarder des vid\u00e9os et faire la lessive \u2013 car ni le temps ni les moyens d\u2019avoir une vie sociale \u2013 son seul horizon c\u2019est l\u2019\u00e9cran. Et sa seule exp\u00e9rience c\u2019est l\u2019abrutissement, d\u2019abord au travail, puis sur le t\u00e9l\u00e9phone. Le t\u00e9l\u00e9phone repr\u00e9sente alors le seul faible lien qu\u2019elle a encore avec une vie qui semble exister \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de sa bulle. \u00ab\u00a0On Falling\u00a0\u00bb se distingue donc comme un portrait minimaliste d\u2019une femme saisie dans sa solitude et une spirale \u00e9conomique symbole d\u2019une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 malade dont l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 repose sur une d\u00e9tresse cach\u00e9e. C\u2019est un portrait plein d\u2019empathie et de retenue dont la fragile et farouche interpr\u00e9tation de Joana Santos absorbe toutes les \u00e9motions dans des yeux qui ne peuvent que sourire.<\/p><p>Si le film n\u2019\u00e9vite pas quelques longueurs, il \u00e9vite n\u00e9anmoins une trajectoire trop conventionnelle en cr\u00e9ant un dispositif finalement beaucoup plus sensoriel que narratif o\u00f9 le r\u00e9cit r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 faire partager et subir la solitude de sa protagoniste au spectateur. On ne la quitte en effet pas une seconde, elle est d\u2019absolument tous les plans malgr\u00e9 un quotidien plus que morne, sans amis, presque sans vie. Et \u00e0 travers un emploi extr\u00eamement r\u00e9p\u00e9titif o\u00f9 elle ne parle, qui plus est, \u00e0 personne, le film nous enferme alors dans ce r\u00e9cit quasiment sans dialogue sur son lieu de travail, qui r\u00e9ussit particuli\u00e8rement bien \u00e0 faire \u00e9prouver l\u2019\u00e9puisement du personnage. Cela cr\u00e9e in\u00e9vitablement une distance avec la protagoniste et r\u00e9ussit ainsi \u00e0 rendre le film assez long et v\u00e9ritablement \u00e9reintant malgr\u00e9 sa dur\u00e9e relativement courte (1h45). Having already made a short film about precarious work (The Shift), the UK-based filmmaker takes us into a barcode nightmare that reveals the hidden side of neoliberalism: repetitive, timed work steered by the beeps of a performance that is constantly measured, compared, and set against others to be optimized and boost productivity, the benefits of which elude the workers. Her film remarkably shows the estrangement of such jobs, the infantilization of the management that goes with it, and the brutality inflicted on the people who endure and keep such a deregulated system running.<\/p><p>While \u201cOn Falling\u201d may be in line with Ken Loach&rsquo;s latest works, it is not just a social drama, as it is ultimately less about precarious employment than about the psychological dimension and, in particular, the loneliness it entails. This is the story of a woman who is alone, displaced, and with no family. An isolated immigrant. But while the issue of immigration is obviously key to the story, as she shares a flat with other workers from all over Europe whom she barely knows and with whom she has only brief contact in the kitchen, which has become the only shared space in her world. It is more the question of the collective in this economic system that is at the core of the subject, as she evolves both at work and at home in a large collective universe where each member is stuck in their own individual bubble. And between the miles covered in the warehouse and evenings spent watching videos and doing laundry \u2013 because she has neither the time nor the money for a social life \u2013 her only horizon is the screen. And her only experience is mindlessness, first at work, then on the phone. The phone is then the only weak link she still has with a life that seems to exist outside her bubble. \u201cOn Falling\u201d stands out therefore as a minimalist portrait of a woman caught in her loneliness and an economic spiral symbolic of a sick society whose efficiency relies on hidden distress. It is a portrait full of empathy and restraint, in which Joana Santos\u2019 fragile and fierce performance absorbs all the emotions in eyes that can only smile.<\/p><p>While the film does have its share of slow moments, it nevertheless steers away from a conventional narrative by creating a structure that is ultimately much more sensory than narrative, where the story manages to share and convey the loneliness of its protagonist to the viewer. We never leave her side for a second; she is in absolutely every shot, despite her dreary daily life, friendless and almost lifeless. And through an extremely repetitive job where she talks to no one, the film traps us in this almost dialogue-free narrative in her workplace, which is particularly successful in conveying the character&rsquo;s exhaustion. This inevitably creates a distance between the viewer and the protagonist, making the film feel quite long and truly exhausting despite its relatively short running time (105 minutes). While the downside of this approach is of course that the story isn&rsquo;t particularly exciting all the way through, it is nevertheless the great strength of a film whose narrative device ultimately perfectly captures its message. \u201cOn Falling\u201d not only demonstrates quite plainly, but also lets us experience how this economic system dehumanizes and divides through a productivity that
