Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, un inconnu \u2026<\/p><p>Nous sommes en 1983, lors du premier mandat de Fran\u00e7ois Mitterrand qui lan\u00e7a ses grands travaux de la Pyramide de Pei au Louvre au Centre international de la Communication dans le quartier de la D\u00e9fense dans la perspective des Champs-Elys\u00e9es et de l\u2019Arc de Triomphe. A la surprise g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, c\u2019est donc un architecte danois m\u00e9connu qui remporte le concours et va rapidement devoir organiser la ma\u00eetrise d\u2019\u0153uvre autour de lui dans un constant bras de fer avec les pouvoirs politiques et financiers du pays.<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s \u00ab\u00a0Borgo\u00a0\u00bb, St\u00e9phane Demoustier revient donc au style de ses premiers films architecturaux en s\u2019attaquant \u00e0 la reconstitution de ce gigantesque chantier. Il r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 faire \u00e9prouver sa vaste \u00e9chelle dans quelques plans larges, peu nombreux mais tr\u00e8s utiles et tr\u00e8s bien r\u00e9alis\u00e9s sans un usage excessif d\u2019effets sp\u00e9ciaux gr\u00e2ce aux nombreuses photos prises <em>in situ<\/em> \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque qui non seulement conf\u00e8rent aux d\u00e9cors une grande v\u00e9racit\u00e9 mais permettent aussi de limiter un budget raisonnable \u00e0 hauteur de 6,5M\u20ac. Tr\u00e8s document\u00e9 et riche de petits d\u00e9tails, bien que romanc\u00e9, \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019inconnu de la Grande Arche\u00a0\u00bb porte ainsi sur le dialogue souvent conflictuel entre un artiste et les pouvoirs publics, sur ces n\u00e9gociations autour des id\u00e9es, des plans et des maquettes \u00e0 valider dans les temps, et sur des exigences artistiques soumises aux al\u00e9as de la politique. Entre portrait solitaire et obsessionnel et satire institutionnelle, le film est d\u2019abord empreint d\u2019une certaine l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9, d\u2019une dose de d\u00e9rision et de touches d\u2019humour r\u00e9guli\u00e8res avant de subtilement se faire de plus en plus inquiet et m\u00e9lancolique \u00e0 mesure que l\u2019architecte ne se bat plus pour son design, mais pour des compromis \u00e9cras\u00e9s sous une tonne d\u2019un imp\u00e9ratif b\u00e9ton de \u2018rigueur\u2019. Il ne filme pas la Grande Arche comme un sujet historique, mais comme l\u2019objet d\u2019un drame psychologique, le th\u00e9\u00e2tre d\u2019une bataille personnelle autour d\u2019une ambition inassouvie. Le r\u00e9cit adapt\u00e9 du roman de Laurence Coss\u00e9 ne se structure ainsi pas autour des \u00e9tapes de construction du chantier, mais bien autour des batailles perdues d\u2019une vision artistique confront\u00e9e \u00e0 la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 des faits (ce qui peut bien \u00e9videmment faire \u00e9cho au travail du r\u00e9alisateur dans le cin\u00e9ma). C\u2019est un processus d\u2019effacement et d\u00e9possession que raconte cette histoire. Celle d\u2019un homme fondamentalement incompris ou malentendu \u2013 qui continua \u00e0 toujours nommer son \u0153uvre le cube quand tout le monde autour de lui l\u2019appelle l\u2019arche \u2013 de sa premi\u00e8re sc\u00e8ne en harmonie avec une nature paisible dans son Danemark natal \u00e0 sa derni\u00e8re sc\u00e8ne sur du b\u00e9ton de la mauvaise couleur dans un pays qui ne l\u2019a pas adopt\u00e9.<\/p><p>Port\u00e9 par un excellent casting au sommet duquel Claes Bang (The Square) compose un h\u00e9ros consomm\u00e9 par l\u2019\u0153uvre de sa vie aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Swann Arlaud et Xavier Dolan en principaux collaborateur sans oublier la danoise Sidse Babette Knudsen et Michel Fau en pr\u00e9sident \u00e9nigmatique, \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019inconnu de la Grande Arche\u00a0\u00bb se distingue par son illustration de l\u2019obsession artistique qu\u2019il d\u00e9peint chez l\u2019architecte en jouant constamment sur la forme carr\u00e9 du \u2018cube\u2019 de son format d\u2019image en 4\/3 \u00e0 ses g\u00e9n\u00e9riques. Ce choix donne \u00e0 la mise en sc\u00e8ne de Demoustier un style \u00e9l\u00e9gant et coh\u00e9rent, bien qu\u2019il aurait pu plus jouer des cadres architecturaux sur certains plans. Johan&#8230; Otto von&#8230; Spre&#8230;ckelsen. Who? Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, a complete unknown&#8230;<\/p><p>It was 1983, during Fran\u00e7ois Mitterrand&rsquo;s first term in office, when he kicked off his big building projects, from the Pei Pyramid at the Louvre to the International Communication Center in the La D\u00e9fense district facing the Champs-Elys\u00e9es and the Arc de Triomphe. To everyone&rsquo;s surprise, it was a largely unknown Danish architect who won the competition and quickly had to organize the project management around him in a constant tug-of-war with the country&rsquo;s political and financial powers.<\/p><p>After \u201cBorgo\u201d, St\u00e9phane Demoustier returns to his early architectural films by recreating this gigantic building site. He successfully conveys its vast scale in a few wide shots, very effective and well executed without excessive use of special effects, thanks to the many photos taken on site at the time, which not only lend the sets a great deal of authenticity but also keep the budget down to a reasonable \u20ac6.5 million. Well-researched and full of small details, although fictionalized, \u201cThe Great Arch\u201d focuses on the often-conflictual dialogue between an artist and the public authorities, on the negotiations around ideas, plans, and models to be approved on time, and on artistic demands subject to the vagaries of politics. Part solitary and obsessive portrait, part institutional satire, the film is initially imbued with a certain levity, a dose of derision, and regular touches of humor, before subtly becoming increasingly anxious and melancholic as the architect fights no longer for his design, but for compromises crushed under a ton of concrete imperatives of \u2018rigor\u2019. He does not frame the Great Arch as a historical subject, but as the object of a psychological drama, the theater of a personal battle over unfulfilled ambition. The story, adapted from Laurence Coss\u00e9&rsquo;s novel, is thus structured not around the stages of construction, but around the lost battles of an artistic vision confronted with the realities of the situation (which obviously echoes the director&rsquo;s work in film). This story is about a process of erasure and dispossession. It is the story of a fundamentally misunderstood man \u2013 who continued to call his work \u2018the cube\u2019 when everyone around him called it \u201cthe arch\u201d \u2013 from his first scene in harmony with the peaceful nature of his native Denmark to his last scene on concrete of the wrong color in a country that did not embrace him.<\/p><p>Driven by an excellent cast, at the top of which Claes Bang (The Square) plays a hero consumed by his life&rsquo;s work alongside Swann Arlaud and Xavier Dolan as his main collaborators, as well as Danish actress Sidse Babette Knudsen and Michel Fau as the enigmatic president, \u201cThe Great Arch\u201d stands out for its depiction of the architect&rsquo;s artistic obsession, constantly playing on the square shape of the \u2018cube\u2019 from its 1:33 aspect ratio to its credits. This choice gives Demoustier&rsquo;s direction an elegant and coherent style, although he could have exploited the architectural frames a little more in some shots. But, more simply structured narratively than his two previous feature films, it is a carefully crafted and accomplished work&#8230; perhaps even his best!<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
