Caire. A nouveau port\u00e9 par l\u2019acteur libanais Fares Fares, ce nouveau thriller politique nous embarque dans le milieu cin\u00e9matographique \u00e9gyptien aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de l\u2019acteur le plus populaire du pays. Un bel homme riche et s\u00e9duisant aux go\u00fbts de luxe dont le statut de star le prot\u00e8ge d\u2019une politique autoritaire qui lui passe un peu au-dessus. Jusqu\u2019au jour o\u00f9, sous la contrainte, il se retrouve embarqu\u00e9 dans le biopic d\u2019Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, sauveur de l\u2019Egypte et aux commandes du pays depuis une d\u00e9cennie d\u00e9j\u00e0. Collabo malgr\u00e9 lui qui se retrouve plong\u00e9 dans les cercles du pouvoir, l\u2019acteur se heurte d\u2019abord \u00e0 la haute sph\u00e8re du r\u00e9gime militaire pour finalement trouver quelques avantages \u00e0 ce pacte faustien. Mais attention \u00e0 ne pas se br\u00fbler les ailes \u2026 un pion reste un pion !<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s un polar intense chez les ripoux et un captivant film d\u2019espionnage en milieu religieux, le cin\u00e9aste su\u00e9dois <em>persona non grata<\/em> dans le pays de son p\u00e8re, se moque cette fois autant de la suffisance des gens du cin\u00e9ma que de l\u2019arrogance des politiques du pays des pharaons. Tourn\u00e9 en Turquie pour seulement 9 millions d\u2019euros, son film navigue entre fiction et r\u00e9el dans un style \u00e9l\u00e9gant r\u00e9ussissant \u00e0 faire \u00e0 nouveau exister fortement la ville du Caire dans son histoire et sa mise en sc\u00e8ne. Entre thriller politique et portrait intime, \u00ab\u00a0Les Aigles de la R\u00e9publique\u00a0\u00bb m\u00eale avec une pointe d\u2019humour et une tension toujours sous-jacente mais presque lointaine de nombreuses th\u00e9matiques d\u2019actualit\u00e9, de la manipulation politique \u00e0 la censure en passant par la violence des hommes et la corruption. Le sc\u00e9nario prend en effet le temps de d\u00e9velopper son protagoniste dans ses diff\u00e9rents environnements personnels et professionnels pour mieux saisir toute son \u00e9volution au gr\u00e9 de l\u2019intrigue \u00e0 mesure que son aisance et sa confiance s\u2019effacent peu \u00e0 peu et que l\u2019humour dispara\u00eet. Cette perception est en grande partie permise par le point de vue unique du r\u00e9cit qui est toujours vu sous celui et uniquement celui du protagoniste. Cet outil sc\u00e9naristique fait ainsi partager l\u2019\u00e9tonnement, les surprises, les incompr\u00e9hensions et les \u00e9motions du personnage avec le spectateur \u00e0 mesure que l\u2019intrigue amorce des enjeux plus vastes qui le d\u00e9passent et donc nous d\u00e9passent nous aussi spectateurs. Et bien que le revers de la m\u00e9daille d\u2019un tel choix soit de ne pas d\u00e9velopper pleinement ses personnages secondaires pour conserver cette perception limit\u00e9e des \u00e9v\u00e9nements, cette structure narrative est ind\u00e9niablement l\u2019une des grandes forces du film.<\/p><p>En fin de compte, c\u2019est un film de complot dont le moteur n\u2019est autre que la fausse piste\u00a0: l\u00e0 o\u00f9 le personnage voit le tournage d\u2019un film de propagande, nous spectateurs nous attendons \u00e0 ce que les enjeux tournent autour de la censure et du muselage artistique. Ce stratag\u00e8me narratif nous induit en erreur et cr\u00e9e donc deux pions\u00a0: le personnage et son spectateur. Il faut dire que Tarik Saleh est devenu ma\u00eetre du piratage des genres avec ses thrillers aux codes classiques dont il d\u00e9tourne les m\u00e9canismes. Du \u00ab\u00a0Caire Confidentiel\u00a0\u00bb et son fait divers local qui se muait progressivement en complot \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0La Conspiration du Caire\u00a0\u00bb et son r\u00e9cit d\u2019infiltration d\u00e9tourn\u00e9 en \u00e9tude ambigu\u00eb de personnage, en passant par son <em>action-flick<\/em> hollywoodien \u00ab The Contractor \u00bb qui d\u00e9mystifiait finalement la grandeur am\u00e9ricaine, il y a toujours une zone d\u2019ombre et une \u00e9volution du ton dans ses sc\u00e9narios. The script actually takes the time to develop its protagonist in his various personal and professional environments in order to better capture his evolution throughout the story as his ease and confidence gradually fade and the humor disappears. This perception is largely enabled by the single point of view of the narration, which is always seen from the protagonist&rsquo;s perspective and only his. This screenwriting approach allows the viewer to share the character&rsquo;s astonishment, surprises, misunderstandings, and emotions as the plot begins to address broader issues that are beyond his control and therefore beyond our control as viewers. And although the downside of this choice is that the supporting characters are not fully fleshed out in order to keep this limited perception of events, this narrative structure is undoubtedly one of the film&rsquo;s great strengths.<\/p><p>Ultimately, this is a conspiracy film driven essentially by red herrings: when the character sees a propaganda film being shot, we as viewers expect the stakes to revolve around censorship and artistic muzzling. This narrative trick misleads us, thereby setting up two pawns: the character and the viewer. Tarik Saleh has certainly become a master of genre subversion with his thrillers, which follow classic codes but subvert their mechanisms. From \u201cThe Nile Hilton Incident\u201d and its local crime story that gradually turns into a large-scale conspiracy, to \u201cBoy From Heaven\u201d and its undercover plot that becomes an ambiguous character study, as well as his Hollywood action flick \u201cThe Contractor,\u201d which ultimately demystifies American greatness, there is always a gray area and an evolution of tone in his scripts. At first funny and then chilling, \u201cEagles of the Republic\u201d once again proves to be a more subtle film than it first appears, deeply rooted in reality \u2013 from its unsparing portrayal of
