D\u00e8s ses premiers plans, \u00ab Hedda \u00bb nous happe donc par son style et ses personnages emballants. C\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019une nuit de folie qui se d\u00e9roule exclusivement dans une grande demeure \u00e0 une \u00e9poque ind\u00e9termin\u00e9e lors d\u2019une f\u00eate plus extravagante que pr\u00e9vue \u2026 une sorte de \u2018Babylon\u2019 de la manipulation !<\/p><p>Adapt\u00e9 de la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pi\u00e8ce \u00ab\u00a0Hedda Gabler\u00a0\u00bb (1891) d\u2019Henrik Ibsen, le film de Nia DaCosta (Little Woods\u00a0; Candyman\u00a0; 28 ans plus tard\u00a0: le temple des morts) conserve la trame de l\u2019histoire, avec ses dynamiques et motivations de personnages, mais bouleverse les \u00e9l\u00e9ments du r\u00e9cit de mani\u00e8re audacieuse et intrigante. \u00ab\u00a0Hedda\u00a0\u00bb transpose ainsi son intrigue dans une \u00e9poque ind\u00e9termin\u00e9e qui joue des anachronismes dans les dialogues et les musiques par rapport aux d\u00e9cors, voitures et costumes. Mais l\u2019adaptation va plus loin, en ajoutant un cinqui\u00e8me acte, en modifiant largement l\u2019introduction et la conclusion, en se d\u00e9roulant exclusivement lors d\u2019une soir\u00e9e qui n\u2019est qu\u2019\u00e9voqu\u00e9e dans la pi\u00e8ce d\u2019origine, ainsi qu\u2019en faisant de la protagoniste une femme noire et des ex-amants deux femmes lesbiennes. La nature du r\u00e9cit en est in\u00e9vitablement alt\u00e9r\u00e9e tout en conservant les codes du th\u00e9\u00e2tre classique, de son unit\u00e9 de temps (ici, une soir\u00e9e) \u00e0 son unit\u00e9 de lieu (ici, la grande demeure), jusqu\u2019\u00e0 son unit\u00e9 d\u2019action sur une seule et unique intrigue que l\u2019on suit tout du long \u00e0 travers les objectifs et le point de vue de sa protagoniste.<\/p><p>Mais cette transposition queer de l\u2019intrigue n\u2019en d\u00e9nature pas pour autant le propos, tant \u00ab\u00a0Hedda\u00a0\u00bb est bien le portrait de son personnage-titre qui est de tous les plans, toujours film\u00e9e \u00e0 sa hauteur, selon son point de vue. C\u2019est ainsi que malgr\u00e9 son comportement sournois, pervers, voire sociopathe, elle devient fascinante gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une Tessa Thompson (Sorry to Bother You\u00a0; Passing) qui cr\u00e8ve l\u2019\u00e9cran aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Nina Hoss (T\u00e1r), Tom Bateman, Imogen Poots et Nicholas Pinnock. C\u2019est une femme dont le mode de vie d\u00e9pend du succ\u00e8s d\u2019un mari qui l\u2019ennuie. C\u2019est une femme pleine d\u2019assurance et d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9gance qui aime avant tout le contr\u00f4le et pour qui la manipulation est autant un jeu qu\u2019une forme de lib\u00e9ration d\u2019un carcan masculin qui ne sait pas satisfaire une femme. Sur les compositions de Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir (Joker\u00a0; T\u00e1r), la mise en sc\u00e8ne met ainsi en lumi\u00e8re cet univers fastueux et ostentatoire dans une somptueuse photographie de Sean Bobbitt (12 Years A Slave\u00a0; Judas and the Black Messiah) qui joue de judicieux et splendides choix de cadrage, d\u2019angles et d\u2019\u00e9clairage. C\u2019est une \u2018big party\u2019, ce qui implique in\u00e9vitablement de nombreux invit\u00e9s qui ne cessent de se regarder. Et quoi de mieux que les reflets de nombreux miroirs pour illustrer ces jeux de regards. Mais les d\u00e9cors et costumes participent aussi \u00e0 la repr\u00e9sentation de cet univers et \u00e9tat d\u2019esprit du protagoniste-h\u00f4te, en apparaissant correspondre \u00e0 une certaine \u00e9poque tout en \u00e9tant plus sexy et r\u00e9v\u00e9lateurs que la biens\u00e9ance de cette \u00e9poque ne le permettrait. From the very first shots, \u201cHedda\u201d captivates us with its thrilling style and characters. This is a one-crazy-night-movie that takes place exclusively in a big estate at an unspecified time during a party that turns out to be more outrageous than expected&#8230; a kind of \u2018Babylon\u2019 of manipulation!<\/p><p>Adapted from Henrik Ibsen&rsquo;s famous play \u201cHedda Gabler\u201d (1891), Nia DaCosta&rsquo;s film (Little Woods; Candyman; 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple) retains the story&rsquo;s plot, with its character dynamics and motivations, but boldly and excitingly departs from its narrative elements. \u201cHedda\u201d is thus set in an unspecified era, with anachronistic dialogue and music in relation to the sets, cars, and costumes. But the adaptation goes even further, adding a fifth act, significantly altering the introduction and conclusion, taking place exclusively during a party that is only mentioned in the original play, and turning the protagonist into a Black one and the love interests into lesbian women. The nature of the story is then inevitably altered, while still respecting the conventions of classical theater, from its unity of time (here, one night) to its unity of place (here, the big mansion), to its unity of action on a single plot that we follow throughout through the goals and point of view of its protagonist.<\/p><p>But this queer transposition of the plot does not distort its point, as \u201cHedda\u201d is very much a portrait of its title character, who is in every shot, always shot at her level, from her point of view. Thus, despite her devious, perverse, even sociopathic behavior, she becomes fascinating thanks to Tessa Thompson (Sorry to Bother You; Passing), who lights up the screen alongside Nina Hoss (T\u00e1r), Tom Bateman, Imogen Poots, and Nicholas Pinnock. She is a woman whose lifestyle depends on the success of a husband who bores her. She is a self-assured and elegant woman who loves control above all else and for whom manipulation is as much a game as it is a form of liberation from a male shackle that does not know how to please a woman. Featuring a score by Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir (Joker; T\u00e1r), the direction highlights this lavish and showy world in Sean Bobbitt&rsquo;s (12 Years a Slave; Judas and the Black Messiah) stunning cinematography, which makes clever and beautiful choices in framing, angles, and lighting. It&rsquo;s a \u2018big party\u2019, which naturally means lots of guests who are always eyeing each other. And what better way to capture these gazes than through the reflections of multiple mirrors? But the sets and costumes also add to the depiction of this world and mood of the protagonist-host, looking like they&rsquo;re from a certain era while being sexier and more revealing than the decorum of that time would allow. All in all, this is an elegant, fast-paced and sophisticated film.
