am\u00e9ricaine, europ\u00e9enne, chinoise et russe sous l\u2019\u00e9gide de la Conf\u00e9d\u00e9ration helv\u00e9tique qui coordonne ces \u00e9changes sous haute tension.<\/p><p>Sortie le m\u00eame jour que la troisi\u00e8me saison de \u00ab\u00a0The Diplomat\u00a0\u00bb sur <em>Netflix<\/em>, cette mini-s\u00e9rie <em>Arte<\/em> s\u2019inscrit dans la lign\u00e9e des s\u00e9ries politiques port\u00e9es par des femmes dont \u00ab\u00a0Borgen\u00a0\u00bb reste l\u2019\u00e9tendard. Mais les deux s\u00e9ries de cet automne nous plongent dans un sous-genre d\u2019autant plus complexe et p\u00e9rilleux (d\u2019un point de vue sc\u00e9naristique) \u00e0 travers la diplomatie. Elles mettent en effet toutes deux des protagonistes f\u00e9minins jouant un r\u00f4le de premier plan dans l\u2019ombre de la g\u00e9opolitique mondiale. Si chez <em>Netflix<\/em>, c\u2019est au format \u2018<em>walk and talk<\/em>\u2019 tr\u00e8s rythm\u00e9 et maximaliste du Bureau ovale au 10 Downing Street, en passant au pas de charge de la chambre \u00e0 coucher personnelle d\u2019une ambassadrice \u00e0 Air Force One. Ici c\u2019est d\u2019une mani\u00e8re bien plus intimiste, minimaliste et retenue que \u00ab The Deal \u00bb met en sc\u00e8ne une discr\u00e8te cheffe du protocole au c\u0153ur de la mission de facilitation helv\u00e9tique qui h\u00e9berge et encadre les n\u00e9gociations. La premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 s\u2019av\u00e8re ainsi assez lente, souffrant parfois de certains dialogues d\u2019exposition trop soulign\u00e9s ou inutiles mais m\u00ealant n\u00e9anmoins suffisamment d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eats vari\u00e9s \u2013 n\u00e9gociations diplomatiques, drame personnel, thriller d\u2019espionnage \u2013 pour qu\u2019une fois synchronis\u00e9s, tous ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments construisent un v\u00e9ritable thriller diplomatique dans une seconde moiti\u00e9 palpitante. Si tout n\u2019est pas parfaitement cr\u00e9dible ou intrigant, l\u2019ensemble reste tr\u00e8s r\u00e9ussi gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un fond int\u00e9ressant et instructif, et une belle conclusion.<\/p><p>Entre huis-clos diplomatique et thriller intime, cette mini-s\u00e9rie m\u00e9ticuleusement bien document\u00e9e et port\u00e9e par un casting international et multilingue, refl\u00e8te \u00e0 la fois le travail de documentaires politiques de Jean-St\u00e9phane Bron (Connu de nos services\u00a0; Cleaveland contre Wall Street) et le travail sur la place des femmes dans les lieux de pouvoir d\u2019Alice Winocour (Proxima\u00a0; Revoir Paris). Les deux cin\u00e9astes montrent ainsi toute la complexit\u00e9 et la fragilit\u00e9 du processus diplomatique dont les accords reposaient encore sur des mots avant que le pur rapport de force ne l\u2019emporte ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es. Car si une n\u00e9gociation est bien un lieu d\u2019affrontement, c\u2019est avant tout une partie d\u2019\u00e9chec o\u00f9 l\u2019on fait in\u00e9vitablement un pas vers l\u2019autre. Autrement dit, c\u2019est l\u2019art de confronter l\u2019autre dans une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 des faits pour \u00e9viter la guerre qui se joue aujourd\u2019hui sur des faits alternatifs. But this fall\u2019s two series delve into a subgenre that is even more complex and challenging (from a screenwriting perspective) through the lens of diplomacy. Both feature female protagonists playing a leading role in the shadows of global geopolitics. While <em>Netflix<\/em> uses a fast-paced, maximalist \u201cwalk and talk\u201d approach, moving quickly from the Oval Office to 10 Downing Street, or from an ambassador\u2019s bedroom to Air Force One, \u201cThe Deal\u201d takes a much more intimate, minimalist, and calm approach, portraying a discreet chief of protocol at the heart of Switzerland\u2019s facilitation mission that hosts and oversees the negotiations. Played by Flemish actress Veerle Baetens (Alabama Monroe; Plaine Orientale), this Swiss diplomat runs from delegation to delegation, appeasing everyone&rsquo;s sensitivities and susceptibilities as much as possible.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23868 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Snapshot_4974.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Snapshot_4974.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Snapshot_4974-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Snapshot_4974-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Snapshot_4974-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>But while this storytelling approach is interesting and bold, questioning the role of neutrality and putting the main character (almost) always in the background, watching the power games and decision-making that happen during these negotiations, it&rsquo;s also a choice that doesn&rsquo;t necessarily get right to the heart of the matter. The first half is therefore rather slow, sometimes lagging with overly emphatic or unnecessary expositional dialogue, but nevertheless mixing enough different threads \u2013 diplomatic negotiations, personal drama, spy thriller \u2013 that once they come together, all these elements build to a solid diplomatic thriller in a thrilling second half. While not everything is perfectly credible or intriguing, the overall story is very satisfying thanks to an interesting and enlightening plot and a great ending.<\/p><p>Part diplomatic closed-door thriller, part intimate drama, this meticulously researched miniseries, featuring an international, multilingual cast, draws on both the work on political documentaries by Jean-St\u00e9phane Bron (Known to our services; Cleveland versus Wall Street) and Alice Winocour&rsquo;s work on women in positions of power (Proxima; Paris Memories). The two filmmakers thereby show the complexity and fragility of the diplomatic process, whose agreements were still based on words before the sheer power balance took over in recent years.
