la Mort \u00bb, n\u00e9 \u00e0 G\u00fcnzburg en Bavi\u00e8re en 1911, mort \u00e0 Bertioga dans l\u2019\u00c9tat de S\u00e3o Paulo en 1979.<\/p><p>C\u2019est \u00e0 cette personnalit\u00e9 plus que controvers\u00e9e que se consacre le dernier film du r\u00e9alisateur et metteur en sc\u00e8ne russe en exil Kirill Serebrennikov, maintes fois remarqu\u00e9 pour ses fluides et flottants portraits de femmes et hommes r\u00e9els et\/ou r\u00e9alistes (\u00ab Limonov, la Ballade \u00bb, \u00ab La Femme de Tcha\u00efkovski \u00bb, \u00ab La Fi\u00e8vre de Petrov \u00bb). Autant vous dire que \u00ab La disparition de Josef Mengele \u00bb se veut plus rude et plus \u00e2pre.<\/p><p>\u00c0 commencer par la photographie du film. \u00c0 l\u2019exception d\u2019une petite sc\u00e8ne d\u2019apparence banale et d\u2019un s\u00e9quence \u00e0 l\u2019inverse effroyablement traumatisante, l\u2019int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 du long-m\u00e9trage est en noir et blanc. Ce choix de couleurs (ou plut\u00f4t de leur absence) instaure une atmosph\u00e8re lourde o\u00f9 tous les protagonistes (Mengele en t\u00eate), leurs paroles, leurs regards, leurs actes appesantissent et litt\u00e9ralement noircissent une intrigue d\u00e9j\u00e0 tr\u00e8s sombre.<\/p><p>Construit par ailleurs en diverses et fragmentaires chronologies, le r\u00e9cit insiste sur une certaine et frappante constance du Josef Mengele pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran, que ce soit dans ses convictions ou dans son attitude, charismatique et froide. Incarn\u00e9 magistralement par un August Diehl qui traverse les \u00e9poques de la vie de cet homme \u00e0 la psych\u00e9 imp\u00e9n\u00e9trable, le m\u00e9decin allemand demeure ainsi un fervent (et non fanatique) national-socialiste, enferm\u00e9 dans et par sa doctrine, malgr\u00e9 toutes les contradictions \u2013 notamment morales \u2013 qui s\u2019y heurtent au cours de son existence.<\/p><p>Or, comme le titre l\u2019indique, le film raconte non pas l\u2019histoire de Josef Mengele, mais celle de sa disparition. C\u2019est-\u00e0-dire de sa fuite vers l\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Sud afin de s\u2019y \u00e9vaporer, d\u2019\u00e9chapper \u00e0 ses juges, de se faire v\u00e9ritablement oublier. Ce qu\u2019il parvient progressivement \u00e0 faire, quitte \u00e0 faire dispara\u00eetre le peu d\u2019humanit\u00e9 qu\u2019il a encore en lui. Let&rsquo;s just say that \u201cThe Disappearance of Josef Mengele\u201d is much rougher and more bitter than these.<\/p><p>This choice starts with the film&rsquo;s cinematography. Except for one seemingly mundane scene and one sequence that is, quite the opposite, horrifyingly traumatic, the entire movie is in black and white. This choice of colors (or rather the lack thereof) creates a heavy atmosphere in which all the protagonists (Mengele foremost among them), their words, their glances, and their actions weigh down and literally darken an already very bleak plot.<\/p><p>The story, which is built around various fragmented timelines, emphasizes a certain striking consistency in Josef Mengele&rsquo;s portrayal on screen, both in his convictions and in his charismatic yet cold demeanor. Masterfully embodied by August Diehl, who travels through the different stages of this man&rsquo;s life with his impenetrable psyche, the German doctor remains a fervent (but not fanatical) National Socialist, locked into and by his doctrine, despite all the contradictions \u2013 particularly moral ones \u2013 that he encounters throughout his life.<\/p><p>However, as the title suggests, the film does not tell the story of Josef Mengele, but rather that of his disappearance. In other words, his escape to South America in order to disappear, evade justice, and truly be forgotten. He gradually succeeds in doing so, even if it means erasing what little humanity he still has left in him. And that is what is so dreadful about it.<\/p><p>Axel
