Mutique et solitaire, cet ancien militaire devenu joueur de cartes professionnel sillonne les casinos fuyant un pass\u00e9 trouble qui le hante \u2026<\/p><p>\u00c9crit et r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par Paul Schrader, sc\u00e9nariste v\u00e9t\u00e9ran connu notamment pour \u00ab Taxi Driver \u00bb et \u00ab Raging Bull \u00bb de Martin Scorsese ou encore \u00ab Obsession \u00bb de Brian de Palma, \u00ab The Card Counter \u00bb est un petit budget am\u00e9ricain (produit entre autres par Scorsese) tourn\u00e9 en seulement 20 jours et sorti en salles en France \u00e0 la toute fin 2021. C\u2019est un film pesant \u00e0 la fois froid et magn\u00e9tique. C\u2019est une sombre parabole politique o\u00f9 la mauvaise conscience d\u2019un homme fait \u00e9cho \u00e0 celle d\u2019un pays, les \u00c9tats-Unis, qui a vite \u00e9vacu\u00e9 ses crimes inf\u00e2mes. Le traumatisme de l\u2019Am\u00e9rique y est alors sublim\u00e9 au travers de nombreux symboles, d\u2019un cadrage travaill\u00e9 et d\u2019excellentes performances d\u2019acteurs.<\/p><p>Rien ne d\u00e9passe. Il a les cheveux plaqu\u00e9s vers l\u2019arri\u00e8re, le costume cintr\u00e9 et la parole \u00e9conome. Son nom est William Tell en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au mythe suisse de Guillaume Tell bien s\u00fbr mais aussi au \u201ctell\u201d des joueurs de poker. Il est dou\u00e9 mais ne vise jamais de gros gains et ne laisse rien transpara\u00eetre pr\u00e9f\u00e9rant rester discret. L\u2019ensemble des caract\u00e9ristiques du personnage nous donne d\u2019ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 une id\u00e9e de qui il est. L\u2019environnement dans lequel il \u00e9volue, les casinos, compl\u00e8tent ensuite cette all\u00e9gorie d\u2019un pays converti \u00e0 la force pure et \u00e0 l\u2019argent roi. Son chemin bifurque alors lorsqu\u2019il croise deux figures en chemin : celle de l\u2019amour et celle de la haine. La premi\u00e8re est une beaut\u00e9 mature et singuli\u00e8re, d&rsquo;une sensualit\u00e9 non canonique mais rayonnante, \u00e0 la fois dr\u00f4le et tendre. La seconde est instable et appel\u00e9e par la vengeance. Chacun a son propre registre : la brisure pour Isaac, le sauvetage pour Haddish et la damnation pour Sheridan. L\u2019intensit\u00e9 de l\u2019intrigue et du jeu des acteurs est ensuite soulign\u00e9e par une mise en sc\u00e8ne \u00e9pur\u00e9e dans la vie sous contr\u00f4le de William mais au cadre resserr\u00e9 o\u00f9 le personnage est enferm\u00e9 sur lui-m\u00eame et dans sa routine, et au monde sali jaunissant d\u2019un pass\u00e9 enfoui traumatisant le personnage par ses torsions focales et ses angles d\u00e9form\u00e9s.<\/p><p>En somme, c\u2019est un excellent film. Oppressant. M\u00e9taphorique. Quiet and solitary, this former soldier turned professional card player travels the casinos running away from a troubled past that haunts him&#8230;<\/p><p>Written and directed by Paul Schrader, a veteran screenwriter known for Martin Scorsese&rsquo;s \u201cTaxi Driver\u201d and \u201cRaging Bull\u201d as well as Brian de Palma&rsquo;s \u201cObsession\u201d, \u201cThe Card Counter\u201d is a low-budget American film (produced by Scorsese, among others) shot in only 20 days and released in France at the very end of 2021. It is a heavy film, both cold and magnetic. It is a dark political parable where the guilty conscience of a man echoes that of a country, the United States, which has quickly washed away its infamous crimes. The trauma of America is then magnified through numerous symbols, a carefully crafted framing and excellent performances by the actors.<\/p><p>Nothing sticks out. His hair is slicked back, his suit is tight and his speech is sparing. His name is William Tell in reference to the Swiss myth of William Tell of course but also to the poker players&rsquo; \u00ab\u00a0tell\u00a0\u00bb. He is gifted but never aims for big wins and does not let anything show, opting to remain discreet. All the characteristics of the character give us an idea of who he is. The environment in which he evolves, the casinos, then complete this allegory of a country converted to pure power and money reign. His path then takes a turn when he meets two figures along the way: love and hate. The first one is a mature and singular beauty, of a non-canonical but radiant sensuality, both funny and tender. The second is unstable and called by revenge. Each has his own unique characterization: brokenness for Isaac, salvation for Haddish and damnation for Sheridan. The intensity of the plot and the acting is then underlined by a refined <em>mise en sc\u00e8ne<\/em> in William&rsquo;s controlled life but with a tight frame where the character is locked in on himself and in his routine, and the yellowing dirty world of a buried past traumatizing the character with its focal twists and distorted angles.<\/p><p>All in all, this is an excellent film. Oppressive. Metaphorical.
