installe une atmosph\u00e8re singuli\u00e8re entre m\u00e9lancolie et libert\u00e9 dans ce beau film d\u00e9licat et impr\u00e9visible \u00e0 rebours des clich\u00e9s pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 au Festival de Cannes dans \u201cUn Certain Regard\u201d l\u2019an dernier. Il met en sc\u00e8ne une Fran\u00e7aise n\u00e9e en Cor\u00e9e et adopt\u00e9e b\u00e9b\u00e9 qui revient sur ses terres natales 25 ans plus tard en s\u2019inspirant du parcours d\u2019une de ses amies, Laure Badufle, et en apposant sa propre vision de Fran\u00e7ais n\u00e9 de parents cambodgiens. C\u2019est un film qui va \u00e0 la fois \u00e0 l\u2019encontre de la repr\u00e9sentation des personnages asiatiques f\u00e9minins et de l\u2019id\u00e9e de la r\u00e9conciliation avec soi comme une finalit\u00e9.<\/p><p>Pour son second long-m\u00e9trage, Davy Chou met ainsi en sc\u00e8ne une h\u00e9ro\u00efne au caract\u00e8re bien tremp\u00e9, une combattante dans l\u2019\u00e2me toujours tendue par sa rage et sa tristesse. C\u2019est une femme libre qui aime bousculer les autres, les repousser et se perdre alors qu\u2019elle est partag\u00e9e dans un choc culturel entre l\u2019attrait vers ses origines et la distance qu\u2019elle ressent avec ses familles. C\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019une femme \u00e9trang\u00e8re \u00e0 ses propres racines qui s\u2019\u00e9mancipe de toutes les identit\u00e9s qu\u2019on lui assigne !<\/p><p>Et en cela, le film \u00e9pouse les caract\u00e9ristiques de sa protagoniste dans sa spontan\u00e9it\u00e9, son impr\u00e9visibilit\u00e9, son errance, et d\u00e9rive avec elle au fil de fausses fins et de fausses pistes rythm\u00e9es par de fr\u00e9quentes ellipses et ruptures de ton qui d\u00e9stabilisent aussi bien les personnages que les spectateurs.<\/p><p>\u00ab Retour \u00e0 S\u00e9oul \u00bb prend son temps pour montrer comment un retour aux origines peut bousculer un parcours de vie. D\u2019une part, c\u2019est plus un film sur l\u2019abandon et ses multiples facettes qu\u2019un film sur l\u2019adoption, et d\u2019autre part c\u2019est moins une qu\u00eate d\u2019origines qu\u2019une qu\u00eate d\u2019\u00e9mancipation o\u00f9 le chemin pour se trouver et se d\u00e9finir se r\u00e9v\u00e8le long avec un personnage qui ne cesse de se reconstruire et de se r\u00e9affirmer. Le retour au pays et les retrouvailles de familles sont loin de refermer la blessure partag\u00e9e dans ce film qui m\u00e9lange les \u00e9motions des regrets aux incompr\u00e9hensions mutuelles jusqu\u2019aux \u00e9lans de col\u00e8re intraduisibles dans la culture de la politesse cor\u00e9enne. Sans pour autant \u00eatre lourd, il nous laisse joyeux avec de nombreuses musiques \u00e9nergiques.<\/p><p>Si le film se distingue par son esth\u00e9tique avec un cadrage travaill\u00e9 et un encha\u00eenement fluide entre plans de villes de nuit et de nature d\u00e9paysants, c\u2019est v\u00e9ritablement l\u2019actrice principale qui porte le film par sa performance captivante. Park Ji-Min \u2013 artiste plasticienne dont c\u2019est le premier film \u2013 est absolument de tous les plans et impose une impressionnante pr\u00e9sence et authenticit\u00e9 aussi violente que vuln\u00e9rable. Davy Chou filme ainsi sa palette d\u2019\u00e9motions contradictoires, son \u00e9nergie, ses silences. It was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in \u00ab\u00a0Un Certain Regard\u00a0\u00bb last year and features a French woman born in Korea and adopted as a baby who comes back to her native land 25 years later, inspired by the journey of one of her friends, Laure Badufle, and putting his own vision of a Frenchman born of Cambodian parents. It is a movie that goes against both the representation of Asian female characters and the idea of self- reconciliation as an ultimate purpose.<\/p><p>For his second feature, Davy Chou portrays a strong-willed heroine, a fighter at heart, always tense with rage and sadness. She is a free woman who likes to challenge others, to push them away and to get lost while she is torn between the pull towards her origins and the distance she feels from her families. This is the story of a woman who is a stranger to her own roots and who emancipates herself from all the identities assigned to her!<\/p><p>In this respect, the film embraces the characteristics of its protagonist in her spontaneity, her unpredictability, her wandering, and drifts with her through false endings and false trails punctuated by frequent time jumps and breaks in tone that unsettle both the characters and the audience.<\/p><p>\u201cReturn to Seoul\u201d takes its time to show how a journey back to one&rsquo;s origins can shake up one&rsquo;s life path. On the one hand, this is more a film about abandonment and its multiple layers than a film about adoption, and on the other hand, it is less a quest for origins than a quest for emancipation where the path to find and define oneself proves to be a long one with a character who never ceases to rebuild and reaffirm herself. The return home and the family reunion are far from closing the shared wound in this film that mixes emotions from regrets to mutual misunderstandings all the way to bursts of anger untranslatable in the culture of Korean manners. Yet without being heavy, it leaves us joyful with many energetic tunes.<\/p><p>If the film stands out for its aesthetics with an elaborate framing and a seamless transition between nighttime city shots and disorienting nature, it is really the lead actress who carries the film with her captivating performance. Park Ji-Min &#8211; a visual artist whose first film this is &#8211; is in every shot and brings an impressive presence and authenticity, as violent as vulnerable. Davy Chou captures her palette of conflicting emotions, her energy, her silences.
