musicaux ont une place de choix dans le cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain. \u00ab Bohemian Rhapsody \u00bb ravivait la l\u00e9gende de Freddie Mercury, \u00ab Rocketman \u00bb offrait \u00e0 Elton John un inspirant portrait, tandis que \u00ab Elvis \u00bb de Baz Luhrmann \u00e9lectrisait la figure du King. L\u2019hiver dernier, \u00ab Un Parfait Inconnu \u00bb portait \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran toute la po\u00e9sie folk des textes de Bob Dylan. C\u2019est maintenant au tour d\u2019une autre l\u00e9gende vivante d\u2019avoir son propre biopic : Bruce Springsteen alias le Boss.<\/p><p>Si le film manque peut-\u00eatre d\u2019ampleur ou d\u2019un petit suppl\u00e9ment d\u2019\u00e2me, c\u2019est en grande partie parce qu\u2019il fait le choix (assez frustrant certes) de ne pas montrer le rockeur que l\u2019on conna\u00eet. Loin de la rock\u2019n\u2019roll attitude qu\u2019on pouvait attendre, quasi sans aucun concert du Boss, \u00ab Deliver Me from Nowhere \u00bb ne montre pas le musicien sur sc\u00e8ne mais plut\u00f4t l\u2019artiste \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9criture et l\u2019homme derri\u00e8re les textes. Il \u00e9vite ainsi \u00e0 la fois l\u2019hagiographie et le biopic total trop g\u00e9n\u00e9rique. Il se concentre sur un court instant de la carri\u00e8re de Springsteen, quelques mois entre 1981 et 1982, lorsque l\u2019artiste prit le temps du recul et refusa de se soumettre aux lois de l\u2019industrie musicale. A l\u2019instar du film de James Mangold sur les d\u00e9buts de Bob Dylan jusqu\u2019\u00e0 son audacieuse transition vers la musique amplifi\u00e9e, ce biopic est aussi circonscrit sur un moment charni\u00e8re de la carri\u00e8re de l\u2019artiste, et une page m\u00e9connue de sa vie.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Deliver me From Nowhere\u00a0\u00bb montre ainsi Springsteen lorsqu\u2019il se retira dans une maison de location du New Jersey, non loin des lieux de son enfance, et enregistra quasi-seul, sur un 4-pistes, ce qui deviendra son album le moins commercial et le plus introspectif et aust\u00e8re\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Nebraska\u00a0\u00bb. Une collection de chansons \u00e0 contre-courant de ses rugissants tubes, sur les impasses du r\u00eave am\u00e9ricain, les col\u00e8res int\u00e9rieures de criminels, les luttes quotidiennes de cols bleus \u2013 certaines inspir\u00e9es de ses propres souvenirs d\u2019enfance. Le film r\u00e9v\u00e8le la solitude cr\u00e9atrice d\u2019un chanteur dont les blessures refont surface. Il ne parle pas de gloire. Il parle de fragilit\u00e9, d\u2019inspiration, de renaissance. Comme l\u2019album qu\u2019il d\u00e9peint, le film ne cherche pas \u00e0 s\u00e9duire et pr\u00e9f\u00e8re la psychologie au grand spectacle. C\u2019est plus un film sur Bruce que sur le Boss qu\u2019il \u00e9tait \u2013 d\u2019o\u00f9 une mention de \u2018Springsteen\u2019 peut-\u00eatre inappropri\u00e9e dans le titre d\u2019un film qui s\u2019av\u00e8re plus \u00eatre une plong\u00e9e dans un fragment de vie de l\u2019homme qu\u2019\u00e9tait ce rockeur.<\/p><p>Port\u00e9 par un Jeremy Allen White (The Bear ; Iron Claw ; Fremont) sobre et puissant dans une interpr\u00e9tation \u00e9vitant le mim\u00e9tisme aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d\u2019un excellent casting secondaire (Jeremy Strong, Odessa Young, Paul Walter Hauser), \u00ab\u00a0Deliver Me from Nowhere\u00a0\u00bb s\u2019impose comme une sombre et douloureuse ballade qui entre errances et silences s\u2019adonne \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude d\u2019une recherche artistique et de cet \u00e9tat diffus qu\u2019est la d\u00e9pression. A travers cette direction de plus en plus personnelle, la trame explore les cicatrices du chanteur en mettant en relation le pr\u00e9sent et le pass\u00e9 dans des flash-backs en noir et blanc (parfois un peu sommaires) avec Stephen Graham o\u00f9 l\u2019adulte remplace l\u2019enfant jusque dans une magnifique derni\u00e8re sc\u00e8ne.<\/p><p>Bien qu\u2019il change de genre \u00e0 chacun de ses films \u2013 \u00ab\u00a0Hostiles\u00a0\u00bb (western d\u00e9mythifi\u00e9), \u00ab\u00a0Les Brasiers de la Col\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb (drame tourment\u00e9), \u00ab\u00a0The Pale Blue Eye\u00a0\u00bb (whodunnit\/fantastique), \u00ab\u00a0Strictly Criminal\u00a0\u00bb (mafia\/gangsters), \u00ab\u00a0Affam\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb (thriller\/horreur), \u00ab\u00a0Crazy heart\u00a0\u00bb (drame romantique\/musical) \u2013 Scott Cooper poursuit avec ce biopic son cin\u00e9ma arpent\u00e9 par des personnages en pleine crise morale ou existentielle, et taiseux d\u2019avoir trop souffert. Last winter, \u201cA Complete Unknown\u201d brought the folk poetry of Bob Dylan&rsquo;s songs to the screen. Now it&rsquo;s time for another living icon to get his own biopic: Bruce Springsteen, aka The Boss.<\/p><p>If the film perhaps lacks scope or a little extra soul, it is mostly because it makes the (admittedly rather frustrating) choice not to show the rocker we know. Far from the rock \u2018n\u2019 roll attitude we might expect, with almost no concerts by The Boss, \u201cDeliver Me from Nowhere\u201d does not portray the musician on stage, but rather the artist writing and the man behind the lyrics. In doing so, it avoids both being overly flattering and overly conventional. It focuses on a brief moment in Springsteen&rsquo;s career, a few months between 1981 and 1982, when the artist took a step back and refused to submit to the laws of the music industry. Like James Mangold&rsquo;s film about Bob Dylan&rsquo;s early days and his bold move to amplified music, this biopic also highlights a pivotal moment in the artist&rsquo;s career and a lesser-known chapter in his life.<\/p><p>\u201cDeliver Me from Nowhere\u201d depicts Springsteen retreating to a rented house in New Jersey, not far from where he grew up, and recording almost single-handedly on a four-track what would become his least commercial, most introspective, and most stern album: \u201cNebraska\u201d. It is a collection of songs that run counter to his roaring hits, about the dead ends of the American dream, the inner anger of criminals, and the daily struggles of blue-collar workers \u2013 some inspired by his own childhood memories. The guitar is dry, the harmonica haunting, the lyrics wavering between fatalism and despair, with echo effects that give them the feel of ghostly complaints.<\/p><p>Springsteen is portrayed as shut away in his room, tortured by the ghosts of his past and guilty for leaving his family behind. The film reveals the creative loneliness of a singer whose wounds are resurfacing. It isn&rsquo;t about fame. It is about frailty, inspiration, and rebirth. Like the album it depicts, the film does not seek to appeal, opting for psychology over spectacle. It is more a film about Bruce than about the Boss he was \u2013 hence the perhaps misguided mention of \u2018Springsteen\u2019 in the title of a film that turns out to be more of a glimpse into a fragment of the life of the man who was this rocker.<\/p><p>Led by Jeremy Allen White (The Bear; The Iron Claw; Fremont) in a restrained and powerful performance that avoids mimicry, alongside an excellent supporting cast (Jeremy Strong, Odessa Young, Paul Walter Hauser), \u201cDeliver Me from Nowhere\u201d stands out as a dark and painful ballad that, between wanderings and silences, explores artistic pursuit and the hazy state that depression can be. Through this increasingly personal direction, the plot explores the singer&rsquo;s scars by connecting the present and the past in black-and-white flashbacks (sometimes a little sketchy) with Stephen Graham, where the adult replaces the child right up to a beautiful final scene.<\/p><p>Although he switches genres with each film \u2013 \u201cHostiles\u201d (a demystified western), \u201cOut of the Furnace\u201d (a tormented drama), \u201cThe Pale Blue Eye\u201d (a whodunnit\/fantasy), \u201cBlack Mass\u201d (a mafia\/gangsters film), \u201cAntlers\u201d (A horror thriller), \u201cCrazy Heart\u201d (a romantic\/musical drama) \u2013 Scott Cooper continues with this biopic his cinema of characters in the throes of moral or existential crisis, quiet from having suffered too much. This time, he paints a sensitive portrait of the Boss&rsquo;s private life who, after the success of his album \u201cThe River,\u201d went through a courageous and demanding introspection, at the end
