tout juste \u00e9clair\u00e9e par la lumi\u00e8re diffuse d\u2019une lampe d\u2019appoint, la narratrice ouvre les yeux, le c\u0153ur haletant, rattrap\u00e9e par un chagrin. Mais \u00e0 quoi r\u00eavait-elle ou repensait-elle ? De cette demeure occidentale dans la campagne anglaise dont d\u00e9note un magnifique jardin japonais vestige du pass\u00e9, on bascule alors dans un int\u00e9rieur nippon. Nous sommes trente ans plus t\u00f4t, en 1952 \u00e0 Nagasaki. Tout semble si paisible dans cette ville qui a pourtant connu la bombe atomique sept ans auparavant. Sous la pression de sa fille cadette, auteure en devenir, la narratrice raconte ainsi son pass\u00e9 et ses derniers jours dans son pays natal, alors femme au foyer d\u00e9vou\u00e9e fantasmant sur les quelques images des vedettes hollywoodiennes qu\u2019elle collectionne. Mais ce r\u00e9cit la replongeant dans les fant\u00f4mes du pass\u00e9 ne colle pas parfaitement. Est-ce un d\u00e9faut de m\u00e9moire ? Une m\u00e8re qui ne veut pas tout dire \u00e0 sa fille ? Ou une narratrice qui r\u00e9invente ses souvenirs ?<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s le superbe \u00ab A Man \u00bb, Kei Ishikawa adapte ici avec \u00e9l\u00e9gance le premier roman du Prix Nobel de litt\u00e9rature Kazuo Ishiguro \u00e9crit en 1982 et dresse le portrait d\u2019une femme en m\u00ealant une histoire intime \u00e0 travers celle du Japon et en nous invitant \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir sur la m\u00e9moire et la v\u00e9rit\u00e9, en \u00e9voquant \u00e0 la fois la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 nippone d\u2019apr\u00e8s-guerre, la sororit\u00e9 f\u00e9minine et la culpabilit\u00e9 parentale. Dans une magnifique photographie o\u00f9 l\u2019\u00e9clairage et les couleurs splendides et idylliques ainsi qu\u2019un soin tout particulier au cadrage donnent \u00e0 son film une beaut\u00e9 lumineuse, le r\u00e9alisateur, sc\u00e9nariste et monteur s\u2019appuie sur une mise en sc\u00e8ne sophistiqu\u00e9e, nimbant ses personnages d\u2019une aura presque irr\u00e9elle contrastant avec les couleurs ternes du ciel britannique pour \u00e9voquer des souvenirs id\u00e9alis\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019image d\u2019une sc\u00e8ne o\u00f9 les deux protagonistes ne font plus qu\u2019une sur un pont face \u00e0 un panorama ros\u00e9, telles des stars hollywoodiennes des ann\u00e9es 1950 en <em>Technicolor<\/em>. C\u2019est le portrait d\u2019une survivante, donc un personnage fondamentalement d\u00e9fini par sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 se r\u00e9inventer, dont le r\u00e9cit en <em>flashback<\/em> est le reflet de sa culpabilit\u00e9 et dont la m\u00e9moire se disperse comme une fragile lumi\u00e8re qui \u00e9claire et r\u00e9chauffe un peu les souffrances. Face aux drames travers\u00e9s (dans une \u00e9poque comme dans l\u2019autre), les blessures intimes se pansent en silence dans une tentation de fuite qui fait taire les s\u00e9quelles, et (parfois) se r\u00e9fugier dans une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 alternative. La reconstitution du pass\u00e9 de sa m\u00e8re par sa fille cadette est ainsi un moyen inattendu pour la narratrice de mettre le pass\u00e9 entre parenth\u00e8se et de peut-\u00eatre, enfin, s\u2019accepter \u2026 \u201cSouvent, on ne ment pas pour tromper les autres. But what was she dreaming or thinking about? From this Western-style house in the English countryside, with its magnificent Japanese garden, a remnant of the past, we are transported to a Japanese home. We are now thirty years earlier, in 1952 in Nagasaki. Everything seems so peaceful in this city, which had nevertheless experienced the atomic bomb seven years earlier. Under pressure from her youngest daughter, an aspiring author, the narrator then recounts her past and her last days in her native country, when she was a devoted housewife fantasizing about the few images of Hollywood stars she collected. But this story, which brings her back to the ghosts of the past, doesn&rsquo;t quite add up. Is it a memory lapse? A mother who doesn&rsquo;t want to tell her daughter everything? Or a narrator who is reinventing her memories?<\/p><p>After the excellent \u201cA Man,\u201d Kei Ishikawa elegantly adapts Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro&rsquo;s 1982 debut novel, painting a portrait of a woman by blending her personal story with that of Japan and inviting us to reflect on memory and truth, evoking post-war Japanese society, female sisterhood, and parental guilt. In a beautiful cinematography where the lighting and colors are gorgeous and dreamy, and the framing is carefully crafted, giving the film a radiant beauty, the director, screenwriter, and editor relies on sophisticated staging, surrounding his characters with an almost unreal aura that contrasts with the dull colors of the British sky to recall idealized memories, as in a scene where the two protagonists become one on a bridge facing a rosy panorama, like Hollywood stars of the 1950s in <em>Technicolor<\/em>. He thus moves back and forth between contrasts of blue and yellow, constantly shifting between two color schemes, two eras, two continents, between the reality of the present and the reverie of a (reconstructed) past&#8230;<\/p><p>This subtle narrative with a twin timeline, carried by the graceful and delicate performances of Suzu Hirose, Fumi Nikaido, Camilla Aiko, and Y\u014d Yoshida, builds an ambiguous story shrouded in mystery and open to interpretation, in which the narrator is never entirely reliable. This is the portrait of a survivor, therefore a character fundamentally shaped by her ability to reinvent herself, whose flashback narrative reflects her guilt and whose memory scatters like a fragile light that shines and warms a little on her suffering. Faced with the tragedies they have endured (in both eras), intimate wounds are silently treated in an attempt to escape that keeps the scars quiet and (sometimes) takes refuge in an alternate reality. The reconstruction of her mother&rsquo;s past by the younger daughter is thus an unexpected way for the narrator to put the past aside and perhaps, finally, accept herself&#8230; \u201cWe often don&rsquo;t lie to deceive others. We do it to deceive ourselves and hide from unbearable truths\u201d (Kazuo Ishiguro)!<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
