les autres qui m\u00eale histoire politique et musicale aussi bien dans le fond que dans la forme en abordant \u00e0 la fois l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance du Congo, le r\u00f4le trouble de l\u2019ONU et le poids du jazz dans cette g\u00e9opolitique des grandes puissances. Si les atrocit\u00e9s commises par la Belgique durant la colonisation sont d\u00e9sormais largement reconnues, la p\u00e9riode entourant l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance (30 juin 1960) du Congo reste encore souvent abord\u00e9e \u00e0 demi-mots. \u00ab Soundtrack to a Coup d\u2019\u00c9tat \u00bb nous replonge ainsi en pleine guerre froide dans ce pays en proie \u00e0 la guerre civile et aux sous-sols riches en ressources naturelles attisant les ing\u00e9rences occidentales. Le Congo fut en effet le premier fournisseur de minerais pour tous les grands conflits du XXe si\u00e8cle ainsi que pour les technologies modernes. Mais cet h\u00e9ritage colonial est ici mis en parall\u00e8le des mouvements pour les droits civiques aux USA o\u00f9 le jazz est vu \u00e0 la fois comme un outil de lutte politique et comme un instrument de propagande d\u00e9mocratique avec de nombreux artistes utilis\u00e9s comme \u2018ambassadeurs du jazz\u2019, autrement dit, comme &lsquo;cheval de Troie&rsquo; pour la CIA \u2026<\/p><p>Pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 Sundance d\u00e9but 2024 et nomm\u00e9 aux Oscars, ce documentaire s\u2019impose donc comme une \u0153uvre pluridisciplinaire mettant en perspective de mani\u00e8re in\u00e9dite une page cruciale de l\u2019histoire de la d\u00e9colonisation dans un enchev\u00eatrement d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eats illustrant les liens \u00e9troits entre l\u2019\u00e9conomie mini\u00e8re du Katanga, et les n\u00e9gociations onusiennes face \u00e0 l\u2019av\u00e8nement d\u2019un mouvement panafricain naissant et l\u2019\u00e9largissement du mouvement des non-align\u00e9s apr\u00e8s l\u2019entr\u00e9e de seize nouveaux membres aux Nations Unies faisant (dangereusement) pencher l\u2019organisation vers le Sud global. D\u2019autant que si le documentaire suit principalement un chapitrage sur l\u2019ann\u00e9e 1960 au c\u0153ur du r\u00e9cit, la narration fait des allers-retours chronologiques sur plus d\u2019une d\u00e9cennie tout en ins\u00e9rant de brefs \u00e9l\u00e9ments contemporains \u00e0 l\u2019image de certaines pubs de g\u00e9ants de la <em>Tech<\/em> illustrant les cons\u00e9quences encore visibles des minerais du conflit congolais. Cet impressionnant travail de montage \u2013 autant visuel que sonore \u2013 embrasse donc, et de mani\u00e8re assez appropri\u00e9e, une forme f<em>ree jazz<\/em>, libre de toute lin\u00e9arit\u00e9, de didactisme, et de cadre th\u00e9matique rendant l\u2019exp\u00e9rience assez exigeante.<\/p><p>Men\u00e9 tambour battant sur une cinquantaine de standards de jazz, \u00ab\u00a0Soundtrack to a Coup d\u2019\u00c9tat\u00a0\u00bb est un documentaire tr\u00e8s construit qui d\u00e9veloppe un cadre narratif bien sp\u00e9cifique en bouclant par exemple la boucle sur le duo Abbey Lincoln &amp; Max Roach, ou en jouant sur la pipe qui n\u2019en est pas une (de Magritte) pour signifier qu\u2019un discours en cache un autre. Le lien entre Congo et jazz se cr\u00e9e aussi au montage en illustrant par exemple les voyages d\u2019Andr\u00e9e Blouin des images et des musiques de Nina Simone et en portant la voix de ses t\u00e9moignages par une chanteuse \u00e9galement belgo-congolaise. While the atrocities committed by Belgium during colonization are now widely recognized, the period up to Congo&rsquo;s independence (June 30, 1960) is still often glossed over. \u201cSoundtrack to a Coup d\u2019\u00c9tat\u201d takes us back to the height of the Cold War in a country ravaged by civil war and rich in natural resources, fueling Western interference. The Congo was indeed the leading supplier of minerals for all the major conflicts of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, as well as for modern technologies. But this colonial legacy is here juxtaposed with the civil rights movements in the US, where jazz was seen both as a tool for political struggle and as a vehicle for democratic propaganda, with many artists being used as \u2018jazz ambassadors\u2019, or, in other words, as &lsquo;Trojan horses&rsquo; for the CIA&#8230;<\/p><p>Presented at Sundance in early 2024 and nominated for an Oscar, this documentary stands out as a multidisciplinary work that offers a unique perspective on a crucial chapter in the history of decolonization, weaving together a web of interests that illustrates the close links between Katanga&rsquo;s mining economy and UN negotiations in the face of the emergence of a nascent pan-African movement and the expansion of the non-aligned movement after the entry of sixteen new members into the United Nations, which (dangerously) tilted the organization toward the Global South. Although the documentary mainly follows a chapter structure based on the year 1960 at the heart of the narrative, the narration jumps back and forth chronologically over more than a decade, while also inserting brief contemporary elements such as ads from tech giants illustrating the still visible consequences of the ores from the Congolese conflict. This impressive editing work \u2013 both visual and audio \u2013 appropriately embraces a free jazz form, free of any linearity, didacticism, or thematic boundaries, making for a rather challenging experience.<\/p><p>Set to a lively soundtrack of around fifty jazz standards, \u201cSoundtrack to a Coup d\u2019\u00c9tat\u201d is a carefully crafted documentary that develops a very specific narrative framework, for example by bringing the story full circle with the duo Abbey Lincoln &amp; Max Roach, or by playing on the pipe that is not a pipe (by Magritte) to suggest that one speech conceals something else. The connection between jazz and the Congo is also brought to life in the editing, for example by illustrating Andr\u00e9e Blouin&rsquo;s travels with images and music by Nina Simone and by having her testimonies voiced by a singer who is also Belgian-Congolese. The result is a film that is both meticulous and enlightening in substance, while also proving highly original and daring in style, interweaving music and politics &amp; art and
