cin\u00e9ma rebelle en Iran au gr\u00e9 de multiples arrestations, assignations \u00e0 r\u00e9sidence, interdictions de quitter le territoire et censure de tournage, Jafar Panahi recevait en mai dernier la prestigieuse Palme d\u2019Or du festival de Cannes pour \u00ab Un Simple Accident \u00bb. Diff\u00e9rent de ses pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes exp\u00e9riences cin\u00e9matographiques m\u00ealant documentaire et autofiction, mais toujours tourn\u00e9 clandestinement, ce nouveau film marque un retour \u00e0 la fiction traditionnelle pour le cin\u00e9aste iranien dans une histoire empreinte du r\u00e9cit de ses compagnons d\u2019infortune lors de son dernier s\u00e9jour \u00e0 la prison d\u2019Evin en 2022.<\/p><p>A travers une simple rencontre fortuite, puis une prise de d\u00e9cision irr\u00e9pressible, un banal trajet de voiture m\u00e8ne \u00e0 un vertigineux engrenage o\u00f9, le doute s\u2019installant, laisse place \u00e0 une qu\u00eate de v\u00e9rit\u00e9 et de r\u00e9paration aupr\u00e8s d\u2019une galerie de personnages venant de tous les horizons sociaux. A partir d\u2019un prologue dans la p\u00e9nombre du polar, l\u2019intrigue \u00e9volue alors vers les routes cahoteuses d\u2019un improbable road-movie sur un petit tribunal itin\u00e9rant offrant un beau portrait de personnages dont la vari\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9montre \u00e0 elle seule l\u2019ampleur du muselage social du r\u00e9gime iranien. Dans une excellente narration, quasiment en temps r\u00e9el, toujours tr\u00e8s fluide, et qui d\u00e8s le d\u00e9part change de protagoniste pour renseigner juste suffisamment le spectateur, \u00ab\u00a0Un Simple Accident\u00a0\u00bb tisse ainsi un habile m\u00e9lange de gravit\u00e9, de suspense et d\u2019humour \u2013 car oui pour une fois chez Panahi, c\u2019est v\u00e9ritablement un film dr\u00f4le.<\/p><p>C\u2019est en fait un faux film de vengeance qui m\u00e9lange donc les tons d\u2019un second acte proprement comique \u00e0 un troisi\u00e8me bien plus cathartique. C\u2019est une farce qui n\u2019h\u00e9site pas \u00e0 s\u2019aventurer dans un absurde beckettien, une virulente charge politique bien s\u00fbr contre le r\u00e9gime, et un conte moral questionnant les d\u00e9sirs de vengeance &amp; de justice sur fond de traumatismes physiques &amp; psychologiques et d\u2019infinis cercles de violences. Panahi laisse alors beaucoup la cam\u00e9ra tourner, dans un style minimaliste mais \u00e9l\u00e9gant et pr\u00e9cis o\u00f9 les acteurs sont laiss\u00e9s tr\u00e8s libres avec de tr\u00e8s longs dialogues tourn\u00e9s dans de formidables plans-s\u00e9quence. Il joue ainsi beaucoup des plans fixes, de l\u2019\u00e9clairage \u2013 notamment lors d\u2019une confrontation nocturne nimb\u00e9e du rouge d\u2019un phare vengeur \u2013 et des sons, que ce soit lors d\u2019un premier acte quasiment sans dialogue jouant sur les interrogations du spectateur ou d\u2019un magnifique plan final plein d\u2019une tension nous laissant sans voix.<\/p><p>Avec \u00ab\u00a0Un Simple Accident\u00a0\u00bb, Jafar Panahi signe donc ici non seulement son meilleur film, mais rentre dans le cercle tr\u00e8s ferm\u00e9 des r\u00e9alisateurs ayant remport\u00e9 le \u2018grand chelem\u2019 avec le Lion d\u2019Or pour \u00ab\u00a0Le Cercle\u00a0\u00bb (2000), l\u2019Ours d\u2019Or pour \u00ab\u00a0Taxi T\u00e9h\u00e9ran\u00a0\u00bb (2015) et d\u00e9sormais la Palme d\u2019Or dans les trois plus prestigieux festivals europ\u00e9ens. Starting with a prologue reminiscent of a dark crime thriller, the plot then evolves into the bumpy roads of an unlikely road movie about a small traveling court, depicting a beautiful roster of characters whose diversity alone demonstrates the extent of social repression under the Iranian regime. With excellent narration, almost in real time, always very smooth, and which from the outset shifts protagonists to supply just enough information to the viewer, \u201cIt Was Just An Accident\u201d weaves together a clever mix of seriousness, suspense, and humor \u2013 yes, for once in Panahi\u2019s films, this one is genuinely funny.<\/p><p>It is actually a fake revenge film that mixes the tones of a truly comical second act with a much more cathartic third one. This is a farce that does not hesitate to venture into Beckettian absurdity, along with a virulent political attack on the regime, of course, and a moral tale questioning the desires for revenge &amp; justice against a backdrop of physical &amp; psychological trauma and endless cycles of violence. Panahi then lets the camera roll quite a lot, in a minimalist but elegant and precise style where the actors are given a great deal of freedom, with very long dialogue sequences shot in impressive long uncut shots. He relies heavily on still shots, lighting \u2013 particularly during a nighttime face-off bathed in the red glow of a vengeful rear light \u2013 and sound, whether in a first act with almost no dialogue that raises questions in the viewer&rsquo;s mind, or in a breathtaking final shot full of tension that leaves us speechless.<\/p><p>With \u201cIt Was Just An Accident,\u201d Jafar Panahi not only delivers his best film to date, but also joins the very exclusive club of directors who have won the \u201cgrand slam\u201d with the Golden Lion for \u201cThe Circle\u201d (2000), the Golden Bear for \u201cTaxi\u201d (2015) and now the Palme d&rsquo;Or at the three most prestigious European film festivals. This second Iranian Palme d&rsquo;Or, following Abbas Kiarostami&rsquo;s win in 1997, will also carry the honor of representing France at the upcoming Oscars, as it is obviously a foreign production,
