Nouveau, gros pari de <em>Warner<\/em> cette ann\u00e9e apr\u00e8s \u00ab\u00a0Mickey 17\u00a0\u00bb, le studio (qui sera couvert financi\u00e8rement par son excellente ann\u00e9e au box-office commercial) lui alloue pour ce projet plus de $130M, soit 3 \u00e0 4 fois les budgets habituels du r\u00e9alisateur. C\u2019est donc une premi\u00e8re financi\u00e8rement pour Paul Thomas Anderson (PTA), mais aussi narrativement dans la mesure o\u00f9 il signe non seulement son unique film contemporain, mais surtout son premier film vraiment comique, agr\u00e9able et divertissant autour de protagonistes nettement divis\u00e9s entre \u2018gentils\u2019 et \u2018m\u00e9chants\u2019 dans une superproduction qui mettra certainement tout le monde d\u2019accord\u00a0!<\/p><p>Comme souvent dans ses films, le cin\u00e9aste californien chronique la mani\u00e8re dont les bouleversements sociaux, politiques et \u00e9conomiques interagissent avec ses personnages, ici au travers d\u2019une histoire d\u2019ex-r\u00e9volutionnaires \u00e0 la fois distrayante et r\u00e9flexive, mais aussi politique et dr\u00f4le, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e9mouvante et spectaculaire. C\u2019est en fait une adaptation tr\u00e8s libre du roman \u00ab\u00a0Vineland\u00a0\u00bb de Thomas Pynchon dont il conserve la relation p\u00e8re\/fille et le regard sur l\u2019engagement politique tout en le transposant d\u2019\u00e9poque. Le livre explorait en effet le militantisme des ann\u00e9es 1960 et ce qu\u2019il en restait dans les ann\u00e9es 1980, quand ici tout se d\u00e9roule aux XXI<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle dans une Am\u00e9rique post et pr\u00e9-Trump vue comme une guerre perp\u00e9tuelle (\u00e0 l\u2019image du titre) qui fabrique ses propres opposants \u00e0 coups de traumatismes. Au-del\u00e0 des interactions entre ses personnages, c\u2019est donc le r\u00e9cit de la tragique et sisyph\u00e9enne circularit\u00e9 de l\u2019action politique, livrant l\u2019une apr\u00e8s l\u2019autre, encore et toujours les m\u00eames batailles \u2026<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22871 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4750.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4750.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4750-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4750-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4750-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>D\u00e8s ses premi\u00e8res s\u00e9quences, le film nous happe avec trente minutes introductives absolument explosives qui pr\u00e9sentent succinctement et efficacement ses personnages autour d\u2019un trio principal compos\u00e9 d\u2019abord de Teyana Taylor, Leonardo DiCaprio et Sean Penn, avant d\u2019ouvrir une ellipse de plus de seize ans sur le personnage de la jeune Chase Infiniti (dont c\u2019est le premier film). La suite du r\u00e9cit nous entra\u00eene alors dans tellement de situations qu\u2019\u00e0 la fin, on semble avoir v\u00e9cu les \u00e9v\u00e9nements du prologue (r\u00e9ellement) plusieurs ann\u00e9es auparavant sans pour autant que l\u2019ensemble nous ait paru long, d\u00e9montrant une v\u00e9ritable ma\u00eetrise dans le rythme, la structure et la dur\u00e9e du r\u00e9cit. PTA nous embarque en effet dans un univers haut en couleur o\u00f9 cohabitent des r\u00e9volutionnaires lib\u00e9rateurs et libertaires, un club priv\u00e9 de supr\u00e9macistes blancs de No\u00ebl, un r\u00e9seau clandestin de sensei, ou encore des bonnes s\u0153urs fumeuses et guerri\u00e8res. Si l\u2019on peut consid\u00e9rer comme un des b\u00e9mols du film, le manque de d\u00e9veloppement des US et coutumes de chacun de ces s\u00e9duisants et atypiques groupes, il faut souligner que l\u00e0 n\u2019est pas le c\u0153ur du r\u00e9cit qui tourne derri\u00e8re tout ce c\u00f4t\u00e9 flamboyant plus autour d\u2019une relation familiale, d\u2019abord de couple puis filiale.<\/p><p>Une bataille apr\u00e8s l\u2019autre, un genre apr\u00e8s l\u2019autre, un ton apr\u00e8s l\u2019autre, le film m\u00eale ainsi message politique, action et humour. Sans discourir sur la violence politique, PTA joue beaucoup sur une forme de tension comique surfant sur les vagues de la fresque tragique et celles de la farce haletante. Le r\u00e9sultat est assur\u00e9ment une com\u00e9die d\u2019action dont les sc\u00e8nes jubilatoires sont avant tout port\u00e9es par le duo Benicio del Toro &amp; Leonardo DiCaprio (et sa d\u00e9gaine de \u00ab\u00a0Big Lebowski\u00a0\u00bb), mais qui joue aussi sur l\u2019ironie, le burlesque, et le second degr\u00e9. De nombreux d\u00e9tails sont ainsi diss\u00e9min\u00e9s dans l\u2019histoire, que ce soit dans le code d\u2019entr\u00e9e d\u2019un club supr\u00e9macistes qui n\u2019est autre que \u00ab\u00a0Jingle Bell\u00a0\u00bb, ou le nom du groupuscule French 75, ainsi que celui de Perfidia dont on ne traduira pas le double sens en espagnol. Absolument m\u00e9morable en acolyte n\u00e9onazi, le personnage de Sean Penn renferme \u00e9galement plein de clins d\u2019\u0153il, de sa coiffure (pr\u00e9monitoire), \u00e0 son nom tr\u00e8s descriptif (pouvant signifier contracture de m\u00e2choire ou t\u00e9tanos), en passant par la m\u00e9daille tr\u00e8s sarcastique qu\u2019il re\u00e7oit des forces de police du nom du premier Grand Vizir du KKK.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22872 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4751.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4751.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4751-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4751-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4751-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Mais \u00ab\u00a0Une Bataille Apr\u00e8s L\u2019Autre\u00a0\u00bb c\u2019est aussi des courses-poursuites et de l\u2019action film\u00e9 \u00e0 contre-temps du tempo hollywoodien, sur pellicule avec de sublimes plans splendidement \u00e9clair\u00e9s \u2013 notamment de nuit \u2013 suivant les personnages de mani\u00e8re fluide et calme au gr\u00e9 d\u2019une musique et d\u2019un montage rythmant le film d\u2019un sentiment d\u2019urgence, de folie et de danger perp\u00e9tuel. Le long des tunnels, souterrains, et routes \u00e0 vagues parcourus, quelques s\u00e9quences hilarantes ou virevoltantes resteront peut-\u00eatre plus en m\u00e9moire, mais on ne voit surtout pas passer les 2h40 d\u2019un film qui r\u00e9ussit donc aussi \u00e0 \u00eatre divertissant. Superbement construit, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 et mis en sc\u00e8ne, c\u2019est une \u0153uvre survolt\u00e9e, ing\u00e9nieuse et percutante aux fortes r\u00e9sonances actuelles mais qui s\u2019impose aussi comme le film le plus dr\u00f4le de la filmographie de PTA (apr\u00e8s \u00ab\u00a0Licorice Pizza\u00a0\u00bb qui \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 plus agr\u00e9able que ses pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents).<\/p><p>Sa carri\u00e8re est ainsi peut-\u00eatre en train de prendre un tournant avec ce film qui se distingue par son propos politique tr\u00e8s marqu\u00e9 pour un film de studio. Rarement dans l\u2019histoire d\u2019Hollywood, autant d\u2019argent n\u2019avait en effet \u00e9t\u00e9 allou\u00e9 \u00e0 une \u0153uvre aussi frontalement politique, d\u2019autant que le cin\u00e9aste a eu toute la latitude cr\u00e9ative pour mener \u00e0 bien son projet, rien que la dur\u00e9e d\u2019un tel film montrant bien cette libert\u00e9 artistique. En accordant son imaginaire au niveau du gigantisme hollywoodien, PTA rentre donc avec \u00ab\u00a0Une Bataille Apr\u00e8s L\u2019Autre\u00a0\u00bb dans le cercle tr\u00e8s ferm\u00e9 des blockbusters d\u2019auteurs. Mais y restera-t-il\u00a0? Contrairement \u00e0 un Christopher Nolan ou un Denis Villeneuve, son film ne sera tr\u00e8s probablement pas rentable (et pas de peu). After \u201cMickey 17,\u201d <em>Warner Bros<\/em>. is taking another big gamble this year (which will be covered financially by its excellent year at the commercial box office) by allocating more than $130 million to this project, in other words, three to four times the director\u2019s usual budgets. So, this is a first for Paul Thomas Anderson (PTA) financially, but also narratively, as it&rsquo;s not only his only contemporary film, but also his first truly funny, enjoyable, and entertaining film, with protagonists clearly divided between \u2018good guys\u2019 and \u2018bad guys\u2019 in a blockbuster that&rsquo;s bound to win everyone over!<\/p><p>As is often the case in his films, the Californian filmmaker explores how social, political, and economic upheavals interact with his characters, here through a story of ex-revolutionaries that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, but also political and funny, as well as moving and spectacular. It is in fact a very loose adaptation of Thomas Pynchon&rsquo;s novel \u201cVineland\u201d, from which he takes the father\/daughter relationship and the perspective on political commitment, while moving it to a different era. Indeed, the book explored the activism of the 1960s and what remained of it in the 1980s, whereas here everything takes place in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century in a post- and pre-Trump America seen as a perpetual war (as reflected in the title) that creates its own opponents through trauma. Beyond the interactions between its characters, it is therefore the story of the tragic and Sisyphean circle of political action, fighting one battle after another, over and over again&#8230;<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22871 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4750.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4750.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4750-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4750-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4750-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>From its very first scenes, the film grabs us with thirty explosive opening minutes that succinctly and skillfully introduce its characters, centering on a main trio consisting at first of Teyana Taylor, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Sean Penn, before jumping forward more than sixteen years to portray the character of young Chase Infiniti (in her first film). The rest of the story then takes us through so many situations that, by the end, we feel as if we have (actually) lived through the events of the prologue several years earlier, and yet the whole thing doesn&rsquo;t feel so long, demonstrating a sheer command of the pace, structure, and length of the plot. PTA then brings us into a colorful world where revolutionary liberators and libertarians, a white supremacist Christmas club, an underground network of sensei, and even smoking, warrior nuns all come together. While one of the film&rsquo;s drawbacks could be the lack of exploration of each of these fascinating and original groups, it should be noted that this is not the heart of the story, which behind all this blazing drama revolves more around family relationships, first between a couple and then between a father and daughter.<\/p><p>One battle after another, one genre after another, one tone after another, the film blends political message, action, and humor. Without dwelling on political violence, PTA relies heavily on a sense of comic tension that rides the waves of tragic epic and breathless farce. The result is undoubtedly an action comedy whose exhilarating scenes are primarily carried by the duo Benicio del Toro &amp; Leonardo DiCaprio (and his \u201cBig Lebowski\u201d look), but which also plays on irony, slapstick, and double meanings. Numerous details are thus scattered throughout the story, whether it be the entry code for a supremacist club, which is none other than \u201cJingle Bell,\u201d or the name of the French 75 group, as well as that of Perfidia, whose double meaning in Spanish we will not translate. Absolutely memorable as a neo-Nazi acolyte, Sean Penn&rsquo;s character is also full of clever nods, from his (foreshadowing) hairstyle to his very descriptive name Lockjaw, as well as the very sarcastic medal he receives from the police forces named after the first Grand Vizier of the KKK.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22872 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4751.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4751.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4751-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4751-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Snapshot_4751-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>But \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d also features car chases and action sequences filmed at a pace that contrasts with Hollywood standards, on film with gorgeous, beautifully lit shots \u2013 especially at night \u2013 following the characters smoothly and calmly to music and editing that give the film a sense of urgency, madness, and perpetual danger. Along the tunnels, underground passages, and wavy roads, a few hilarious or dizzying sequences may prove most memorable, but above all, the 160 minutes of this film absolutely fly by, making it thoroughly entertaining. Brilliantly crafted, performed, and directed, it is therefore a high-energy, ingenious, and powerful work with strong contemporary resonance, that also stands out as the funniest film in PTA&rsquo;s filmography (after \u201cLicorice Pizza\u201d, which was already more enjoyable than his previous ones).<\/p><p>His career may well be turning a corner with this film, which stands out for its strong political message, unusual for a studio film. In fact, rarely in Hollywood history has so much money been allocated to such a politically charged work, especially since the filmmaker had complete creative freedom to carry out his project, with the length of the film alone illustrating this artistic freedom. By taking his imagination to Hollywood&rsquo;s level of gigantism with \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d, PTA enters the very exclusive club of auteur blockbusters. But will he remain there? Unlike Christopher Nolan or Denis Villeneuve, his film will most likely not be profitable (and not by a small margin). But with the relative success of such a film, PTA will certainly join the ranks of American cinema big shots such as Spielberg, Mann, or Scorsese, who have had the privilege to secure big budgets for
