Une maison. Une famille. Entre conflits g\u00e9n\u00e9rationnels, sociaux et individuels.<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s avoir observ\u00e9 le microcosme religieux de sa ville natale de Jaffa, le cin\u00e9aste palestinien Scandar Copti se penche sur Ha\u00effa, une autre ville isra\u00e9lienne bien singuli\u00e8re \u2013 car r\u00e9put\u00e9e plus tol\u00e9rante \u2013 o\u00f9 Juifs et Arabes cohabitent plus qu\u2019ils ne vivent ensemble. En concentrant son r\u00e9cit sur une famille palestinienne bourgeoise et leurs diff\u00e9rentes relations professionnelles, amicales et matrimoniales, il met en lumi\u00e8re deux soci\u00e9t\u00e9s patriarcales gouvern\u00e9es par des normes traditionnelles o\u00f9 l\u2019image d\u2019une famille tient aussi bien \u00e0 ses marques de r\u00e9ussite qu\u2019\u00e0 la r\u00e9putation de l\u2019un de ses membres. Deux soci\u00e9t\u00e9s qui se c\u00f4toient et se croisent dans un empire de la contrainte o\u00f9 les interdits et les haines transmis par chacune des cultures r\u00e8gnent sur les destins individuels.<\/p><p>Il met ainsi en sc\u00e8ne plusieurs personnages attachants, tous confront\u00e9s \u00e0 des difficult\u00e9s personnelles et collectives dans un carcan soci\u00e9tal, sans jamais les enfermer dans des postures trop simplistes, o\u00f9 le comportement de chacun raconte la dictature morale et les tensions omnipr\u00e9sentes. Sans porter de jugement, il \u00e9voque ainsi les formes d\u2019oppression (qu\u2019elles soient politiques, sociales ou culturelles) et en particulier l\u2019enracinement des valeurs patriarcales qui am\u00e8ne les femmes elles-m\u00eames \u00e0 les d\u00e9fendre, ainsi qu\u2019en filigrane l\u2019endoctrinement de cette soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e9cole.<\/p><p>Comme dans son pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent film, le r\u00e9alisateur opte pour un r\u00e9cit choral multipliant les points de vue au gr\u00e9 de quatre chapitres qui donnent la possibilit\u00e9 au spectateur de nuancer le sens des \u00e9v\u00e9nements. Cette structure o\u00f9 le spectateur n\u2019est en effet pas omniscient en plongeant dans les enjeux d\u2019un seul personnage \u00e0 la fois, l\u2019am\u00e8ne ainsi \u00e0 faire l\u2019exp\u00e9rience des \u00e9v\u00e9nements lui-m\u00eame \u00e0 travers un point de vue subjectif et incomplet, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 tirer des conclusions peut-\u00eatre h\u00e2tives qui seront ensuite d\u00e9menties en passant d\u2019un point de vue \u00e0 l\u2019autre. L\u2019\u00e9criture est donc immersive et non-lin\u00e9aire en faisant des retours en arri\u00e8re pour croiser diff\u00e9rentes trajectoires et r\u00e9v\u00e9ler peu \u00e0 peu les non-dits, secrets d\u00e9voil\u00e9s et dissimulations qui maintiennent le fragile \u00e9quilibre de cette famille.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22577 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4703.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4703.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4703-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4703-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4703-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Mais malgr\u00e9 un r\u00e9cit puissant et un sc\u00e9nario bien \u00e9crit, l\u2019on peut se demander si une structure plus lin\u00e9aire et moins fragment\u00e9e n\u2019aurait pas rendu ce m\u00eame r\u00e9cit encore plus fort (en particulier sur deux sc\u00e8nes de fins de chapitres qui auraient pu \u00eatre absolument d\u00e9vastatrices) en apportant plus de tension et de suspense sur la suite des \u00e9v\u00e9nements alors que le choix est plut\u00f4t ici de questionner le spectateur sur les raisons et les circonstances de ceux-ci. Si ce format est certes r\u00e9v\u00e9lateur de la complexit\u00e9 sociale et d\u2019une cohabitation sans avenir, il semble \u00e9galement cr\u00e9er une certaine distance vis-\u00e0-vis de l\u2019intrigue et donc peine \u00e0 nous \u00e9mouvoir pleinement.<\/p><p>N\u00e9anmoins cette \u00e9criture immersive est renforc\u00e9e par un grand r\u00e9alisme qui conf\u00e8re \u00e0 cette fiction une dimension quasi documentaire, du tournage en cam\u00e9ras port\u00e9es au plus pr\u00e8s des personnages aux acteurs exclusivement non-professionnels, s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s avant tout pour leurs points communs avec leurs personnages (professionnellement ou moralement). Ces derniers se sont en effet impr\u00e9gn\u00e9s de la vie priv\u00e9e de leurs personnages pendant pr\u00e8s d\u2019un an pour ensuite pouvoir r\u00e9agir spontan\u00e9ment aux \u00e9v\u00e9nements de l\u2019intrigue sans suivre n\u00e9cessairement le sc\u00e9nario. One house. One family. Between generational, social, and individual struggles.<\/p><p>After examining the religious microcosm of his hometown of Jaffa, Palestinian filmmaker Scandar Copti turns his attention to Haifa, another unique Israeli city \u2013 known for being more tolerant than others \u2013 where Jews and Arabs coexist rather than live together. By focusing his narrative on a middle-class Palestinian family and their various professional, friendly, and marital relationships, he highlights two patriarchal societies governed by traditional norms, where a family&rsquo;s image depends as much on its signs of success as on the reputation of one of its members. Two societies that rub shoulders and intersect in an empire of constraint where the prohibitions and hatreds inherited from each culture reign over individual destinies.<\/p><p>He thus brings to life several endearing characters, all facing personal and collective hardships within a societal stranglehold, without ever confining them to overly simplistic roles, where the behavior of each character reflects the moral dictatorship and prevailing tensions. Without passing judgment, he thus addresses different forms of oppression (whether political, social, or cultural) and, in particular, the deep-rooted patriarchal values that lead women themselves to defend them, as well as the implicit indoctrination of this society right from school.<\/p><p>As in his previous film, the director adopts a choral narrative style, multiplying the points of view across four chapters that allow the viewer to nuance the meaning of events. This structure, in which the viewer is not all-knowing but is drawn into the struggles of one character at a time, leads them to experience the events themselves through a subjective and incomplete point of view, and to draw conclusions that may be hasty and later disproved as they shift from one point of view to another. The writing is therefore immersive and non-linear, going back in time to cross different trajectories and gradually reveal the unspoken words, secrets unveiled, and concealments that keep this family&rsquo;s fragile balance alive.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22577 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4703.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4703.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4703-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4703-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4703-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>But despite a powerful narrative and a well-written script, we wonder whether a more linear and less fragmented structure might not have made the story even stronger (particularly in two chapter-ending scenes that could have been absolutely shattering) by creating more tension and suspense about what happens next, whereas here the choice is instead to leave the viewer wondering about the reasons and circumstances behind these events. While this approach certainly highlights social complexity and a dead-end co-existence, it also seems to create a certain distance from the plot, making it difficult to fully engage with the story.<\/p><p>Yet this immersive writing is backed up by a strong sense of realism that gives this fiction an almost documentary-like feel, from the use of handheld cameras to film the characters up close to the exclusively non-professional actors, who were selected primarily for their similarities to their characters (professionally or morally).
