Surr\u00e9aliste. Grin\u00e7ant. Trois qualificatifs qui si\u00e9ent \u00e0 merveille \u00e0 cet \u00e9trange bijou cin\u00e9matographique r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par le Tha\u00eflandais Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke. Sous des faux (mais aussi des vrais) airs de com\u00e9die noire reposant sur un concept r\u00e9solument d\u00e9cal\u00e9, \u00ab Fant\u00f4me Utile \u00bb est un film singulier qui tranche, tant pour sa forme que pour son fond.<\/p><p>Primo, le long-m\u00e9trage est absurde en raison de son synopsis. L\u2019histoire raconte celle de March, homme d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9 suite au d\u00e9c\u00e8s pr\u00e9matur\u00e9 de son \u00e9pouse, Nat. Mais celle-ci r\u00e9appara\u00eet sous la forme d\u2019un fant\u00f4me qui d\u2019abord poss\u00e8de\u2026 un aspirateur. La famille de March est en effet propri\u00e9taire d\u2019une usine d\u2019\u00e9lectrom\u00e9nager, et Nat n\u2019a trouv\u00e9 que cet appareil comme canal afin de communiquer avec son mari et de r\u00e9gler quelques affaires en attente, au grand d\u00e9sespoir de Suman, la m\u00e8re de March.<\/p><p>Secundo et logiquement, le film est surr\u00e9aliste parce qu\u2019il emprunte des th\u00e9matiques et des mises en sc\u00e8ne entrem\u00ealant le fantastique et le comique. Outre un format d\u2019image semblant constituer le juste milieu entre la pellicule et le num\u00e9rique, la photographie, tr\u00e8s soign\u00e9e, prend souvent des couleurs chatoyantes ou du moins met en valeur les contrastes (entre le r\u00eav\u00e9 et le r\u00e9el, entre le spectral et le charnel, entre le \u2018bon\u2019 et le \u2018mauvais\u2019), quitte \u00e0 \u00eatre volontairement kitsch, par exemple dans la conception de la robe bleue de Nat et de son \u2018vaisseau-aspirateur\u2019. L\u2019intrigue fait de surcro\u00eet intervenir des personnages arch\u00e9typaux de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 tha\u00eflandaise \u2013 des moines bouddhistes aux ladyboys en passant par les mar\u00e2tres traditionalistes et les politiciens corrompus \u2013, ce qui cr\u00e9e des situations parfois clairement clich\u00e9es mais franchement amusantes.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22579 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4705-e1757868090546.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1315\" height=\"662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4705-e1757868090546.png 1315w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4705-e1757868090546-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4705-e1757868090546-1024x516.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Snapshot_4705-e1757868090546-768x387.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1315px) 100vw, 1315px\" \/><\/p><p>N\u00e9anmoins et tertio, \u00ab Fant\u00f4me Utile \u00bb est grin\u00e7ant parce que malgr\u00e9 son style marqu\u00e9, il d\u00e9nonce les nombreuses failles de la Tha\u00eflande contemporaine. Nat est ainsi d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9e des suites d\u2019une maladie respiratoire due \u00e0 la pollution industrielle, symbolis\u00e9e par la notion r\u00e9currente et par ailleurs polys\u00e9mique de \u2018poussi\u00e8re\u2019 (en langue tha\u00efe, \u2018poussi\u00e8re\u2019 d\u00e9signe aussi les laiss\u00e9s-pour-compte, ceux qui sont balay\u00e9s par les puissants), d\u2019o\u00f9 le choix de l\u2019aspirateur. Pollution industrielle g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e par un capitalisme impitoyable, o\u00f9 les grands patrons (et leurs grandes familles) sacrifient la sant\u00e9 de leurs employ\u00e9s au nom du profit, le tout avec l\u2019aval d\u2019une classe dirigeante qui est loin d\u2019\u00eatre blanche comme neige. Le film d\u00e9bute ainsi par le d\u00e9mant\u00e8lement d\u2019un monument \u00e0 la gloire des r\u00e9volutions d\u00e9mocratiques des ann\u00e9es 1930 et 1940, plus tard remplac\u00e9 par une statue en l\u2019honneur de Nat qui peu \u00e0 peu se retrouve en contradiction avec cette puissante phrase prononc\u00e9e dans le film : \u201cles fant\u00f4mes sont ceux qui ne se r\u00e9signent pas \u00e0 la Mort, leur retour est un acte de protestation\u201d. Nat devient en effet, sans s\u2019en rendre compte au d\u00e9part, un \u2018fant\u00f4me utile\u2019 aux yeux du pouvoir qui, au nom d\u2019un \u2018bien\u2019 relatif, efface la m\u00e9moire ainsi que les spectres de personnes jug\u00e9es encombrantes par une poign\u00e9e de dirigeants. Le long-m\u00e9trage fait aussi directement r\u00e9f\u00e9rence aux manifestations violemment r\u00e9prim\u00e9es de 2010, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une narration en poup\u00e9es russes qui, en somme, permet de critiquer l\u2019\u00e9touffement du pass\u00e9 \u00e0 des fins id\u00e9ologiques \u00e0 coups de lavage de cerveau \u2013 ici, litt\u00e9ralement. Cependant, outre cette \u00e9vidente prise de position politique, \u00ab Fant\u00f4me Utile \u00bb demeure un film qui interroge la notion d\u2019emprise familiale et sociale, o\u00f9 le personnage de Nat, comme celui tout aussi int\u00e9ressant et touchant de Suman, finissent par remettre en question leurs r\u00f4les dans cette soci\u00e9t\u00e9 tiraill\u00e9e. Surreal. Grim. Three words that perfectly describe this strange cinematic gem directed by Thai filmmaker Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke. Under the guise of a dark comedy (both fake and real) based on a resolutely offbeat concept, \u201cA Useful Ghost\u201d stands out as a unique film, both in style and substance.<\/p><p>Firstly, the movie is absurd in terms of plot. The story tells of March, a man who is devastated by the untimely death of his wife, Nat. But she reappears as a ghost who initially possesses&#8230; a vacuum cleaner. March&rsquo;s family actually owns an appliance factory, and Nat has only found this device as a channel to communicate with her husband and settle some unfinished business, much to the despair of Suman, March&rsquo;s mother.<\/p><p>Secondly, and logically, the film is surreal in its use of themes and staging that blend fantasy and comedy. In addition to an aspect ratio that strikes a balance between film and digital, the meticulous camerawork often uses shimmering colors or at least highlights contrasts (between dream and reality, between the spectral and the carnal, between \u2018good\u2019 and \u2018evil\u2019), even if it means being deliberately kitsch, for example in the design of Nat&rsquo;s blue dress and her \u2018vacuum cleaner ship\u2019. The plot also features archetypal characters from Thai society \u2013 from Buddhist monks to ladyboys, traditionalist stepmothers, and corrupt politicians \u2013 which leads to situations that are sometimes clearly clich\u00e9d but downright hilarious.<\/p><p>Thirdly, \u201cA Useful Ghost\u201d is grim because, despite its distinctive style, it exposes the many flaws of present-day Thailand. For instance, Nat died from a respiratory illness caused by industrial pollution, symbolized by the recurring and polysemic notion of \u2018dust\u2019 (in Thai, \u2018dust\u2019 also refers to the marginalized, those who are swept away by the powerful), hence the choice of the vacuum cleaner. Industrial pollution generated by ruthless capitalism, where big bosses (and their large families) sacrifice the health of their employees in the name of profit, all with the approval of a ruling class that is far from being squeaky clean. Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke has created (in his feature film debut, no less!) a unique and intelligent work, with a conclusion that is perhaps a little too delirious but which certainly fits in with
