Elle est <em>matchmaker<\/em> (marieuse\/entremetteuse en Fran\u00e7ais) employ\u00e9e par une chic agence qui vend des <em>date<\/em> (des rencards en Fran\u00e7ais, voyons actualisez-vous) et particuli\u00e8rement dou\u00e9e pour trouver l\u2019\u00e2me s\u0153ur de ses clients et les accompagner moyennant finance vers le mariage. Oui mais voil\u00e0, elle est elle-m\u00eame c\u00e9libataire et se retrouve confront\u00e9e au retour dans sa vie de son ex, acteur fauch\u00e9, et \u00e0 l\u2019arriv\u00e9e dans sa vie d\u2019un richissime parti. Succombera-t-elle alors au charme de l\u2019aristocrate qui coche toutes les cases ou bien retombera-t-elle dans ceux de l\u2019artiste qui n\u2019en coche aucune\u00a0? Tous les \u00e9l\u00e9ments de la com\u00e9die romantique classique sont donc r\u00e9unis dans ce film qui joue de ce cadre conventionnel pour approfondir son sujet et interroger la nature de nos relations intimes \u2026<\/p><p>Pour son second long-m\u00e9trage, Celine Song prend un malin plaisir \u00e0 jouer avec les codes de la rom-com hollywoodienne, du triangle amoureux o\u00f9 les deux pr\u00e9tendants seraient tout aussi parfaits pour notre protagoniste mais pour des raisons diff\u00e9rentes, au classique montage de premiers <em>dates<\/em> rat\u00e9s qui ici se transforment en entretiens d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9s (mais pas au point de viser en dessous du m\u00e8tre quatre-vingt) o\u00f9 chacun aligne ses exigences chiffr\u00e9es telle une n\u00e9gociation commerciale. Alors oui, il y a bien quelques moments comiques, et il y a clairement une trame romantique, mais si \u00ab\u00a0Materialists\u00a0\u00bb a bien la forme d\u2019une com\u00e9die romantique, ce n\u2019en est pas une. La sc\u00e9nariste et r\u00e9alisatrice du tr\u00e8s beau \u00ab\u00a0Past Lives\u00a0\u00bb nous entra\u00eene dans un questionnement plus profond sur la qu\u00eate de l\u2019\u00e2me s\u0153ur, sur la valeur de l\u2019amour aujourd\u2019hui, et sur la marchandisation des relations humaines. L\u2019amour y est un investissement o\u00f9 l\u2019intangible se confronte au mat\u00e9riel comme une extension \u00e0 nos relations personnelles de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de consommation. C\u2019est un film doux et fort qui \u00e9tonnera \u00e0 la fois pour son quatri\u00e8me acte prolongeant une fin de rom-com qui semblait balis\u00e9e, que pour ses prologue et \u00e9pilogue qui bouclent le film et ouvrent la dissertation sur la th\u00e9matique du mariage d\u2019un point de vue universel et historique. Bien que sa conclusion aurait pu d\u00e9jouer d\u2019autant plus les attentes, c\u2019est ainsi un film tr\u00e8s construit et tr\u00e8s bien \u00e9crit qui offre une observation lucide de nos d\u00e9sirs d\u2019amours.<\/p><p>Tourn\u00e9 \u00e0 New-York City en pellicule 35mm, \u00ab\u00a0Materialists\u00a0\u00bb conserve le style \u00e9l\u00e9gant de \u00ab\u00a0Past Lives\u00a0\u00bb dans une mise en sc\u00e8ne qui joue de la g\u00e9om\u00e9trie de l\u2019espace pour souligner subtilement la dynamique des sc\u00e8nes. Ici les plans ne divisent plus les personnages mais les enferment dans un cadre dont ils sont souvent en bordure pour progressivement se rapprocher ou en sortir, jouant ainsi des \u00e9quilibres et d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibres du cadre (fen\u00eatre, table de restaurant, poteaux ext\u00e9rieurs \u2026). She&rsquo;s a matchmaker employed by a chic agency that sells dates, and she&rsquo;s particularly expert at finding her clients&rsquo; soul mates and accompanying them for a fee along the way to marriage. But she herself is single, and is faced with the return into her life of her ex, a broke actor, and the coming into her life of a rich gentleman. Will she then fall for the charm of the aristocrat who ticks all the boxes, or the artist who ticks none? All the elements of the classic romantic comedy are therefore brought together in this film, which uses this conventional framework to delve deeper into its subject matter and question the nature of our intimate relationships&#8230;<\/p><p>For her second feature film, Celine Song cleverly plays with the codes of the Hollywood rom-com, from the love triangle where the two suitors would be just as perfect match for our protagonist but for different reasons, to the classic montage of failed first dates that here turn into desperate interviews (but not to the point of aiming below six feet) where everyone lines up their figured demands like a sales negotiation. So, yes, there are a few funny moments, and there&rsquo;s clearly a romantic plot, but although \u201cMaterialists\u201d has the appearance of a romantic comedy, it isn&rsquo;t one. The screenwriter and director of the beautiful \u201cPast Lives\u201d takes us into a deeper questioning of the search for a soul mate, the worth of love these days, and the commodification of human relationships. Love is then an investment where the intangible collides with the material, like an extension of consumer society to our personal relationships. It&rsquo;s a gentle yet powerful film, surprising both for its fourth act, which prolongs a rom-com ending that seemed pretty formulaic, and for its prologue and epilogue, which bring the film full circle and open the discussion on the theme of marriage from a universal and historical point of view. Although its conclusion could have foiled expectations even more, this is a highly structured and well-written film that offers a clear-sighted observation of our desires for love.<\/p><p>Shot in New York City on 35mm film, \u201cMaterialists\u201d carries on the elegant style of \u201cPast Lives\u201d, with a staging that exploits the geometry of space to subtly underscore the dynamics of the scenes. Here, the shots no longer divide the characters but enclose them in a frame from which they are often on the edge, gradually moving in or out of it, playing with the balance and imbalance of the frame (window, restaurant table, outside poles&#8230;). But while Celine Song gives these symbolic shots time to materialize, she also mixes it up with shot\/reverse shots to capitalize on the performance of her classy cast, led by Dakota Johnson (The Peanut Butter Falcon), who anchors the conventional codes of the genre and acts as a focal point for the viewer, alongside a very convincing Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) courted by all the studios this summer, and a very fair Chris Evans (Captain America), who plays with his leading figure in a very good role far out of character.<\/p><\/div><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Rapha\u00ebl
