Annihilation) revient avec un autre projet radical co-\u00e9crit et r\u00e9alis\u00e9 avec le v\u00e9t\u00e9ran am\u00e9ricain Ray Mendoza. A nouveau produit par les studios <em>A24<\/em>, le film offre une vision brute du conflit irakien en 2006 en nous plongeant dans l\u2019histoire vraie d\u2019une p\u00e9rilleuse mission de surveillance \u00e0 Ramaldi qui va vite tourner au chaos. L\u2019int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 du film se concentre ainsi sur cette seule et unique op\u00e9ration sur moins d\u2019une journ\u00e9e avec une narration en temps r\u00e9el (apr\u00e8s l\u2019introduction) o\u00f9 le spectateur est embarqu\u00e9 au sein du peloton de Navy SEALs dont faisait partie le co-r\u00e9alisateur. C\u2019est en cela plus un film de m\u00e9moire(s) qu\u2019un film de guerre, car le parti pris de ce projet consiste \u00e0 n\u2019utiliser que les souvenirs des diff\u00e9rents soldats. \u00ab Warfare \u00bb est ainsi un titre appropri\u00e9 tant il s\u2019agit v\u00e9ritablement d\u2019une plong\u00e9e dans l\u2019op\u00e9ration militaire, sans aucune consid\u00e9ration g\u00e9opolitique ou sociale, aucun d\u00e9veloppement de personnage, z\u00e9ro contexte, pas m\u00eame le moindre briefing de mission : que de l\u2019attente, de la tactique, des protocoles, du combat et du travail d\u2019\u00e9quipe. Le film privil\u00e9gie donc avant tout le r\u00e9alisme au sc\u00e9nario, et la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 aux fusillades hollywoodiennes dans une intense reconstitution des combats et une saisissante repr\u00e9sentation de la fraternit\u00e9 guerri\u00e8re.<\/p><p>Ce manque de contexte peut para\u00eetre g\u00eanant mais c\u2019est aussi tout le propos du film en refl\u00e9tant le sort des soldats envoy\u00e9s sur le champ de bataille sans trop savoir pourquoi ni quoi faire. Car \u00ab\u00a0Warfare\u00a0\u00bb est un huis-clos \u00e9tendu aux alentours d\u2019une maison que les soldats occupent (\u00e0 l\u2019image du pays) durant tout le film. Il se r\u00e9sume \u00e0 infiltrer la maison puis r\u00e9ussir \u00e0 en sortir vivant. Le film s\u2019ouvre et se cl\u00f4t donc litt\u00e9ralement sur elle, ce lieu unique et finalement presque personnage central du r\u00e9cit. La fin en est d\u2019autant plus frappante en restant \u2013 une fois les soldats partis \u2013 dans ce lieu, dans ces d\u00e9cors d\u00e9vast\u00e9s, ces rues vides de soldats bless\u00e9s et \u00e9puis\u00e9s o\u00f9 seule la confusion et un sinistre silence demeurent \u2026 tout cela sans savoir qui a remport\u00e9 cette bataille ou m\u00eame pour quoi ils se sont battus (renvoyant bien \u00e9videmment \u00e0 la guerre en Irak dans sa globalit\u00e9).<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20999 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4294.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4294.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4294-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4294-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4294-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>A travers ces deux co-r\u00e9alisateurs et co-sc\u00e9naristes, \u00ab\u00a0Warfare\u00a0\u00bb pousse \u00e0 l\u2019extr\u00eame \u00e0 la fois une dimension immersive et une dimension visc\u00e9rale du film de guerre.<\/p><p>Pour l\u2019un (Ray Mendoza, dont c\u2019est aussi le premier long-m\u00e9trage) c\u2019est \u00e9videmment un film de m\u00e9moire et un film hommage \u00e0 ses fr\u00e8res d\u2019armes sans qui il ne serait peut-\u00eatre plus en vie. Les d\u00e9tails techniques et op\u00e9rationnels font alors foison, des comportements, mouvements, et communications radio des soldats jusque dans une d\u00e9cision absolument majeure dans le domaine militaire qui aura probablement d\u2019importantes cons\u00e9quences pour l\u2019officier responsable. Pourtant \u00e0 la fin du film, on n\u2019y pense m\u00eame plus tant il a continu\u00e9 sa route sans mettre en valeur cette prise de d\u00e9cision. En somme c\u2019est un film de guerre, oui, mais qui esquive les codes hollywoodiens, sans aucune musique, sans discours de bravoure, sans dramatisation\u00a0: que du sang et de la poussi\u00e8re. C\u2019est une reconstitution tr\u00e8s litt\u00e9rale, apolitique et objective de faits r\u00e9els qui s\u2019impose comme l\u2019un des films de guerre qui romance le moins son sujet. Il n&rsquo;y a aucun message, c\u2019est un r\u00e9cit brut racont\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de souvenirs qui renforcent cette volont\u00e9 de r\u00e9alisme et d\u2019immersion.<\/p><p>Pour l\u2019autre (Alex Garland) c\u2019est une nouvelle exp\u00e9rience visc\u00e9rale de cin\u00e9ma dans la continuit\u00e9 du style visuel et sonore de \u00ab\u00a0Civil War\u00a0\u00bb avec notamment le retour des monteurs son Glenn Freemantle et Ben Barker qui nous bombardent de silences puis d\u2019explosions et de balles qui fusent. Le film joue des points de vue en parcourant les souvenirs des soldats, nous rendant aussi sourds qu\u2019eux lorsque survient un impact d\u2019explosif pour ne retrouver le son que lorsque l\u2019on retrouve ceux hors de port\u00e9e du souffle. Le point de vue de l\u2019officier radio nous permet par ailleurs \u00e0 la fois d\u2019avoir les \u00e9l\u00e9ments de contexte des autres unit\u00e9s alentour, mais aussi de cr\u00e9er un v\u00e9ritable brouhaha chaotique tel qu\u2019il a pu l\u2019exp\u00e9rimenter dans cette situation. De mani\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, la ma\u00eetrise exceptionnelle du son, de l\u2019image et du montage met en sc\u00e8ne les combats et les explosions diff\u00e9remment pour rendre la violence et l\u2019angoisse d\u2019autant plus palpables. Il n\u2019y a ainsi aucun plan sur les ennemis (anonymes) vis\u00e9s et tu\u00e9s, c\u2019est laiss\u00e9 int\u00e9gralement en hors-champ puisque l\u2019objet n\u2019est tout simplement pas la bravoure ou l\u2019expertise de ces soldats d\u2019\u00e9lite, mais plut\u00f4t leur souffrance. Once again produced by <em>A24 <\/em>Studios, the film offers a raw insight into the Iraqi conflict in 2006, immersing us in the true story of a harrowing surveillance mission in Ramaldi that quickly spirals into chaos. The entire film in fact focuses on this single operation over less than a day, with a real-time narrative (after the opening) in which the viewer is essentially embedded in the Navy SEALs platoon to which the co-director belonged. In that respect, this is more a remembrance film than a war film, since the approach here is to use only the memories of the various soldiers. \u201cWarfare\u201d is then a fitting title, as it&rsquo;s really a deep dive into the military operation, with no geopolitical or social considerations, no character development, zero context, not even the slightest mission briefing: just the wait, the tactics, the protocols, the combat and the teamwork. The film therefore favors realism over script, and truth over Hollywood gunplay, in an intense recreation of combat and a striking depiction of military brotherhood.<\/p><p>This lack of context may seem bothersome, but it&rsquo;s also the whole point of the film, reflecting the fate of soldiers sent to the battlefield without really knowing why or what to do. After all, \u201cWarfare\u201d is a kind of closed-door film, set within the surroundings of a house that the soldiers occupy (just like the country itself) throughout the entire movie. It boils down to infiltrating that house and getting out alive. So, the film quite literally opens and closes on the house itself, this single location and almost central character of the story. The ending is then all the more striking as we remain \u2013 once the soldiers have left \u2013 in this place, in these devastated sets, these empty streets of wounded and exhausted soldiers where only confusion and an eerie silence remain&#8230; all this without knowing who won this battle or even what they were fighting for (obviously echoing the war in Iraq as a whole).<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20999 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4294.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4294.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4294-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4294-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4294-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>With its two co-directors and co-writers, \u201cWarfare\u201d takes both the immersive and visceral dimensions of the war film to new heights.<\/p><p>For one of them (Ray Mendoza, whose directorial debut this is), it&rsquo;s obviously a film of recollection and a tribute to his brothers-in-arms, without whom he might no longer be alive. Technical and operational details then abound, from the soldiers&rsquo; behavior, movements and radio communications to an absolutely paramount military decision that will probably have far-reaching consequences for the commanding officer. And yet, by the end of the film, we don&rsquo;t even think about it any more, since the movie has moved on without emphasizing the importance of this decision. Ultimately, this is a war film, yes, but one devoid of Hollywood grammar, with no score, no heroic speeches, no dramatization: just dust and blood. It&rsquo;s a very literal, apolitical and objective recreation of real events, and stands out as one of the war films that least romanticizes its subject. There&rsquo;s no message, just a raw account told from memories that further strengthen the film&rsquo;s commitment to realism and immersion.<\/p><p>For the other (Alex Garland), it&rsquo;s another visceral cinematic experience in line with the visual and sound approach of \u201cCivil War\u201d, with sound designers Glenn Freemantle and Ben Barker returning to blast us with silences, explosions and flying bullets. The film explores the soldiers&rsquo; memories from different points of view, leaving us as deaf as they are when an explosive impact hits, only to regain sound when we recover those beyond the blast&rsquo;s range. Meanwhile, the radio officer&rsquo;s point of view not only gives us contextual information about the other troops in the vicinity, but also creates the chaotic hubbub he himself experienced in this situation. Generally speaking, the exceptional craftsmanship of sound, image and editing brings the fighting and explosions to life in new ways, making the violence and anguish all the more tangible. For example, there are no shots of the (faceless) enemies being shot and killed; those are left entirely out of frame, since the point is simply not the bravery or expertise of these elite soldiers, but rather their suffering. Although it doesn&rsquo;t spend a single minute developing them, the film then focuses on the reactions of its characters, played by a talented ensemble cast far from the usual stereotypes, to let us feel the confusion, the fear and the sheer terror of combat!<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20995 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Snapshot_4290.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" nerve-wracking tension for 90 minutes (which don&rsquo;t seem all that short given the sheer horror of the scenes), and a hard-watch (for any sensitive soul or veteran suffering from PTSD), a
