chute. En Roumanie, aucune mention n\u2019est faite de l\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement dans la presse ou la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision d\u2019\u00c9tat. Un mois plus tard, la derni\u00e8re \u2018d\u00e9mocratie populaire\u2019 dirig\u00e9e depuis quinze ans d\u2019une main de fer par un dictateur communiste, Nicolae Ceau\u015fescu, s\u2019appr\u00eate \u00e0 basculer lors d\u2019un banal discours de son \u2018Conducator\u2019 devant la foule venue l\u2019acclamer \u2026 Nous sommes le 20 d\u00e9cembre, \u00e0 quelques jours de No\u00ebl, suite au massacre \u00e9tudiant de Timisoara, le pays est au bord de l\u2019implosion. Mais les autorit\u00e9s pr\u00e9parent les festivit\u00e9s du Nouvel An comme si de rien n\u2019\u00e9tait !<\/p><p>C\u2019est dans ce contexte litt\u00e9ralement extraordinaire, que le sc\u00e9nariste et r\u00e9alisateur Bogdan Mure\u015fanu nous emm\u00e8ne aupr\u00e8s de personnages tout \u00e0 fait ordinaires : un \u00e9tudiant, un apparatchik, une famille en panique, et une improbable \u00e9quipe de t\u00e9l\u00e9vision. Tous l\u2019ignorent, mais le r\u00e9gime va s\u2019effondrer le lendemain dans ce qui restera comme l\u2019une des r\u00e9volutions les plus rapides de l\u2019Histoire. Si cette fin de r\u00e8gne \u00e9clair a d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 racont\u00e9e dans le cin\u00e9ma roumain, son approche tisse une fresque unique en forme de kal\u00e9idoscope le temps d\u2019une journ\u00e9e au gr\u00e9 d\u2019une narration fragment\u00e9e qui parvient n\u00e9anmoins \u00e0 garder l\u2019ensemble coh\u00e9rent gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une excellente construction au sc\u00e9nario et au montage (avec deux monteurs diff\u00e9rents pour ajuster cette structure narrative).<\/p><p>Si le r\u00e9sultat final est certes un peu long (2h18), force est de constater qu\u2019il n\u2019y a pas une sc\u00e8ne en trop dans ce r\u00e9cit sans temps mort, d\u2019abord un peu d\u00e9routant, mais dont l\u2019accumulation des micro-\u00e9v\u00e9nements nous achemine vers un bouleversement g\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Tout est admirablement reli\u00e9 \u00e0 travers des trajectoires qui se croisent et s\u2019effleurent de mani\u00e8re parfois dramatique, parfois fortuite, mais toujours en parall\u00e8le. Pourtant connect\u00e9s entre eux, les personnages ne se connaissent donc pas, ne se parlent pas, et finalement n\u2019habitent pas les m\u00eames intrigues, chacun vit ainsi dans son propre petit monde. Car dans une dictature, la peur et le soup\u00e7on transforment une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 en un archipel d\u2019\u00eeles ferm\u00e9es. Les citoyens s\u2019habituent au double langage, \u00e0 chuchoter, \u00e0 marcher sur des \u0153ufs.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20553 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Snapshot_4126.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Snapshot_4126.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Snapshot_4126-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Snapshot_4126-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Snapshot_4126-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Or, bien que le film distille bel et bien cette atmosph\u00e8re parano\u00efaque dans laquelle se d\u00e9battait la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 roumaine, il d\u00e9livre avant tout une note joyeuse et euphorique. C\u2019est finalement et \u00e9tonnamment plut\u00f4t un \u2018<em>feel good movie<\/em>\u2019 ce qui implique de terminer le r\u00e9cit au moment o\u00f9 tout est parfait pour l\u2019ensemble de ces personnages pourtant d\u00e9pass\u00e9s par les \u00e9v\u00e9nements. Le film ne montre alors pas v\u00e9ritablement la r\u00e9volution en elle-m\u00eame, laissant les violences qui s\u2019ensuivirent \u00e0 la grande Histoire. Ce n\u2019est en ce sens moins un film historique, qu\u2019une fresque tragicomique sur une galerie de personnages ordinaires. Et ce choix de la tragicom\u00e9die refl\u00e8te tout le concept narratif d\u2019un film o\u00f9 les spectateurs savent ce que les personnages ignorent\u00a0: les uns vivent dans un monde de peur, de d\u00e9sespoir, dans une prison, sans savoir qu\u2019une issue se pr\u00e9sentera le lendemain\u00a0; quand pour les autres qui savent que le r\u00e9gime s\u2019appr\u00eate \u00e0 tomber et que le couple Ceau\u015fescu sera ex\u00e9cut\u00e9 sans d\u00e9lai le 25 d\u00e9cembre, cela rend follement absurde et comique les comportements des diff\u00e9rents personnages.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Ce nouvel an qui n\u2019est jamais arriv\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb est un premier film particuli\u00e8rement r\u00e9ussi, port\u00e9 par de superbes interpr\u00e8tes dans un tempo plut\u00f4t lent et progressivement <em>crescendo<\/em> \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019image du \u00ab\u00a0Bol\u00e9ro\u00a0\u00bb de Ravel utilis\u00e9 dans la s\u00e9quence finale \u2013 et au titre intrigant qui fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 cette \u00e9mission t\u00e9l\u00e9 qui ironiquement n\u2019a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 diffus\u00e9e et s\u2019apparentait \u00e0 un ultime soubresaut kafka\u00efen d\u2019un r\u00e9gime \u00e0 l\u2019agonie. In Romania, no mention was made of the event in the press or on state television. One month later, the last &lsquo;people&rsquo;s democracy&rsquo; ruled with an iron fist by a Communist dictator, Nicolae Ceau\u015fescu, for fifteen years, was about to topple during a banal speech by its &lsquo;Conducator&rsquo; to the cheering crowds&#8230; It was December 20, just a few days before Christmas, and following the student massacre in Timisoara, the country was on the brink of implosion. But the authorities are preparing the New Year festivities as if nothing had happened!<\/p><p>It&rsquo;s against this literally extraordinary backdrop that writer-director Bogdan Mure\u015fanu takes us on a journey of ordinary characters: a student, an apparatchik, a panicking family and an unusual TV crew. They all don&rsquo;t know it, but the regime will collapse the next day in what will go down as one of the fastest revolutions in history. While this lightning end to the reign of power has already been told in Romanian cinema, his approach weaves a unique kaleidoscope-like tale over the course of a day, with a fragmented narrative that nonetheless manages to keep the whole coherent thanks to excellent storytelling and editing (with two different editors to fine-tune this narrative structure).<\/p><p>While the final result may be a little long (138\u2019), there&rsquo;s not a scene too many in this seamless narrative, which is initially a little confusing, but whose accumulation of micro-events leads to a general upheaval. Everything is admirably tied together through paths that cross and graze each other, sometimes dramatically, sometimes incidentally, but always simultaneously. Although connected, the characters don&rsquo;t know each other, don&rsquo;t talk to each other, and don&rsquo;t share the same storylines, each living in their own little world. After all, in a dictatorship, fear and suspicion transform a society into an archipelago of closed islands. Citizens get used to hiding things, to whispering, to walking on eggshells.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20553 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Snapshot_4126.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Snapshot_4126.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Snapshot_4126-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Snapshot_4126-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Snapshot_4126-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>And yet, although the film conveys the paranoid atmosphere in which Romanian society was struggling, it is above all joyful and exhilarating. Ultimately, and surprisingly, it&rsquo;s more of a \u2018feel good movie\u2019, which means that the story ends when everything looks just perfect for all the characters, who are nonetheless overwhelmed by the situation. The film then doesn&rsquo;t really show the revolution itself, leaving the subsequent violence to history. In this sense, it&rsquo;s less a historical film than a tragicomic tale about a host of ordinary characters. And this choice of tragicomedy reflects the whole narrative concept of a film in which viewers know what the characters don&rsquo;t: the former live in a world of fear and despair, in a prison, without knowing that there will be a way out the next day; while for the latter, who know that the regime is about to fall and that the Ceau\u015fescu couple will be executed forthwith on December 25, this makes the behavior of the various characters wildly absurd and comic.<\/p><p>\u201cThe New Year That Never Came\u201d is a particularly accomplished first feature, driven by superb performances in a rather slow tempo that gradually builds to a crescendo \u2013 like Ravel&rsquo;s \u201cBolero\u201d used in the final sequence \u2013 and an intriguing title that refers to the TV program that ironically was never broadcast, and was akin to the final Kafkaesque gasp of a dying regime. The handheld camera also reinforces the quasi-documentary dimension of the story, while the 4:3 aspect ratio conveys the imprisonment of the characters and the country, before expanding to a 16:9 ratio as a metaphor for the freedom that emerges in a finale combining archival and fictional images, when the spark of revolution is lit&#8230;<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
