Mais c\u2019est ainsi que le per\u00e7oit ou croit le percevoir Frankie, femme aux multiples troubles et dont le rapport au temps est brouill\u00e9. Si brouill\u00e9 qu\u2019elle vit de fa\u00e7on analogique, presque hors du cadran. Si bien que ses points de rep\u00e8res sont de plus en plus confus et que son existence oscille entre mirages, errances et cauchemars. Alors lorsqu\u2019elle s\u2019engage \u00e0 rendre service \u00e0 une inconnue moyennant paiement, elle bascule progressivement et d\u00e9finitivement dans la discordance et le flou.<\/p><p>\u201c<em>Where do you think they\u2019re coming from, hiding from?<\/em>\u201d Fruit d\u2019incommensurables efforts, \u00ab The Gazer \u00bb est le tout premier long-m\u00e9trage de Ryan J. Sloan, \u00e9lectricien de formation, qui vient enfin de r\u00e9aliser son r\u00eave d\u2019enfant : celui de concevoir un film. Int\u00e9gralement imagin\u00e9, tourn\u00e9 et financ\u00e9 par les propres moyens de R.J. Sloan et ceux d\u2019Ariella Mastroianni (qui incarne \u00e0 la perfection Frankie \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran), ce bijou du cin\u00e9ma ind\u00e9pendant \u00e9tats-unien est un film personnel, r\u00e9fl\u00e9chi et percutant qui n\u00e9cessite plusieurs visionnages et plusieurs clefs de lecture. Son sc\u00e9nario en spirale est en effet particuli\u00e8rement \u00e9nigmatique, notamment parce qu\u2019il joue sur l\u2019absolue confusion et le doux chaos int\u00e9rieurs de Frankie. Le film constitue ainsi un sombre thriller m\u00e9ticuleux o\u00f9 diverses r\u00e9alit\u00e9s et hallucinations s\u2019entrem\u00ealent, et o\u00f9 la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 ne transpara\u00eet pas toujours comme l\u2019on peut le penser.<\/p><p>\u201c<em>If you feel yourself zoning out, rewind tape<\/em>.\u201d Tourn\u00e9 en pellicule de 16 mm avec une cam\u00e9ra Arri SR2 (dont feu le premier propri\u00e9taire est la personne \u00e0 qui est d\u00e9di\u00e9e le film), \u00ab The Gazer \u00bb dispose d\u2019une image qui a manifestement un grain, ce qui nous plonge directement dans l\u2019univers physique et mental tortueux de Frankie. Et bien que les changements de couleurs distinguent les purs cauchemars (aux teintes chaudes, jaunes, marron) des dures r\u00e9alit\u00e9s (aux teintes froides, bleues, grises), les sc\u00e8nes nocturnes, le montage et nombre de d\u00e9tails visuels une fois assembl\u00e9s cr\u00e9ent une seule et m\u00eame atmosph\u00e8re \u00e9touffante, \u00e0 part. What do you see?<\/em>\u201d. From the very first moment of this feature film, we feel transported far, far away from the world as we know it. This is how Frankie perceives it, or thinks she does. She&rsquo;s a woman of many disorders, whose sense of time is so blurred that she lives analogically, almost off the clock. As a result, her bearings become increasingly confused, and her existence oscillates between daydreams, wanderings and nightmares. So, when she agrees to help a stranger for a fee, she gradually and definitively falls into a state of discordance and vagueness.<\/p><p>\u201c<em>Where do you think they\u2019re coming from, hiding from?<\/em>\u201d. \u201cGazer\u201d is the result of immeasurable effort on the part of Ryan J. Sloan, a trained electrician who has finally realized his childhood dream of making a film. Entirely imagined, shot and financed by R.J. Sloan&rsquo;s own resources and those of Ariella Mastroianni (who plays Frankie to perfection on screen), this gem of American independent cinema is a personal, thoughtful and powerful film that requires several viewings and several interpretation keys. Its spiraling script is particularly enigmatic, not least because it exploits Frankie&rsquo;s absolute confusion and gentle inner chaos. The film is thus a dark, meticulous thriller where different realities and hallucinations intermingle, and where the truth doesn&rsquo;t always come out as you might think.<\/p><p>\u201c<em>If you feel yourself zoning out, rewind tape<\/em>.\u201d Shot on 16mm film with an Arri SR2 camera (whose late first owner is the person to whom the film is dedicated), \u201cGazer\u201d features a picture that is clearly grainy, drawing us directly into Frankie&rsquo;s tortuous physical and mental world. And although the color shifts distinguish pure nightmares (with warm, yellow, brown hues) from harsh realities (with cold, blue, gray hues), the night scenes, the editing and many of the visual details once assembled create a single, suffocating atmosphere all their own. An atmosphere that wouldn&rsquo;t be nearly as eerie without the hypnotic, magnetic, even horrific music of Steve Matthew Carter, whose score is as traumatic as it is haunting. \u201cGazer\u201d is both disturbing and striking, and is sure to become a must-see in genre movies for anyone who relishes the madness of this film.<\/p><p>Axel
