mais pas celle d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui. \u00ab\u00a0La Chambre de Mariana\u00a0\u00bb nous plonge en 1942 en Bucovie, r\u00e9gion roumaine d\u00e9sormais ukrainienne sous la botte nazie, o\u00f9 la m\u00e8re d\u2019Hugo d\u00e9cide sans m\u00eame lui expliquer pourquoi de le confier \u00e0 son amie d\u2019enfance Mariana. Elle lui remet une valise et l\u2019avenir de son fils pour que cette derni\u00e8re le cache dans le cagibi de sa chambre qui s\u2019av\u00e8re \u00eatre r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement fr\u00e9quent\u00e9e par des soldats allemands\u00a0!<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s \u00ab\u00a0La Douleur\u00a0\u00bb, Emmanuel Finkiel continue sa collaboration avec M\u00e9lanie Thierry qui joue donc ici aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d\u2019une troupe d\u2019acteurs ukrainiens et forme notamment avec le jeune Artem Kyryk un duo poignant. L\u2019actrice fran\u00e7aise de \u00ab\u00a0La Princesse de Montpensier\u00a0\u00bb ou de \u00ab\u00a0La Vraie Famille\u00a0\u00bb y incarne donc cette m\u00e8re de substitution dans une langue qu\u2019elle ne parlait ni ne comprenait avant le tournage. Sa performance est <em>Juste<\/em> remarquable tant elle se m\u00e9tamorphose en cette femme rayonnante et exub\u00e9rante dans sa langue, ses gestes et attitudes au point d\u2019en oublier progressivement que ce n\u2019est pas une actrice ukrainienne.<\/p><p>Mais au-del\u00e0 de cette prouesse de jeu, \u00ab\u00a0La chambre de Mariana\u00a0\u00bb offre un point de d\u00e9part singulier avec la privation d\u2019un sens en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral prioritaire au cin\u00e9ma\u00a0: la vue. Le r\u00e9alisateur adopte en effet le regard de cet enfant cach\u00e9 et suspendu aux bruits qui l\u2019entourent et aux sc\u00e8nes qu\u2019il devine \u00e0 travers la cloison dans un impressionnant travail sur la perception. Un dispositif statique (quasi \u00e0 huis-clos) qui joue beaucoup sur l\u2019imagination du hors-champ dans une mise en sc\u00e8ne subtile qui repose (notamment) sur un voyeurisme innocent. Si le format carr\u00e9 de l\u2019image renforce encore plus cette sensation d\u2019enfermement, le film ne joue pas que sur la tension (loin de l\u00e0) et s\u2019aventure dans l\u2019onirique dans certaines s\u00e9quences port\u00e9es par des jeux de montage et de tr\u00e8s beaux plans \u2013 en particulier dans l\u2019obscurit\u00e9.<\/p><p>C\u2019est un film sur la Shoah et sur l\u2019enfance \u00e0 travers cette fable d\u2019Anne Frank en Ukraine, une mani\u00e8re de nous raconter l\u2019Histoire par le petit bout de la lorgnette. Si l\u2019histoire des enfants cach\u00e9s pour \u00eatre sauv\u00e9s est connue, elle est rarement racont\u00e9e \u00e0 travers le regard des premiers concern\u00e9s comme ici o\u00f9 deux histoires personnelles se rencontrent pour cr\u00e9er une relation compl\u00e9mentaire. Semblable \u00e0 un ange dans la p\u00e9nombre, Hugo devient ainsi l\u2019ange de son propre ange-gardien alors qu\u2019ils apprennent l\u2019un et l\u2019autre \u00e0 comprendre le monde de l\u2019autre. Il est le t\u00e9moin mutique d\u2019un monde qui s\u2019\u00e9teint dont l\u2019enfance s\u2019efface pour laisser place \u00e0 la solitude. Sa vie d\u2019avant, ceux qu\u2019il aime, sa m\u00e8re, sa cousine, n\u2019appara\u00eetront plus que dans ses souvenirs pour peupler son imaginaire, parfois aussi r\u00e9els que sa chair et ses os lorsqu\u2019il grelote de froid, d\u2019incertitude et de carence de tendresse. C\u2019est une \u0153uvre intime, \u00e2pre, et romanesque dont la narration m\u00eale avec \u00e9l\u00e9gance les r\u00eaves, souvenirs, et la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 d\u2019une vie confin\u00e9e r\u00e9duite \u00e0 la (r\u00e9)imagination. She hands over a suitcase and her son&rsquo;s future to Mariana, who hides him in the closet of her bedroom, which turns out to be regularly visited by German soldiers!<\/p><p>After \u201cMemoir of War\u201d, Emmanuel Finkiel continues working with M\u00e9lanie Thierry, who plays alongside a cast of Ukrainian actors, forging a gripping pairing with the young Artem Kyryk. The French actress from \u201cThe Princess of Montpensier\u201d and \u201cThe Family\u201d plays this foster mother in a language she neither spoke nor understood before filming. Her performance is <em>Righteously<\/em> outstanding, as she transforms herself into this radiant woman, exuberant in her language, gestures and demeanor, to the point of gradually forgetting that she&rsquo;s not a native Ukrainian actress.<\/p><p>But beyond this acting feat, \u201cMariana&rsquo;s Room\u201d offers a singular premise with the deprivation of a sense that is generally a key element in cinema: sight. Indeed, the director takes on the gaze of this hidden child, hanging on to the noises around him and the scenes he guesses through the wall, in a remarkable exploration of perception. This is a static set-up (almost behind closed doors) that plays heavily on the imagination of the off-screen, in a subtle staging that relies (notably) on innocent voyeurism. While the square aspect ratio of the image further enhances this feeling of confinement, the film doesn&rsquo;t play on tension alone (far from it), and ventures into the dreamlike in certain sequences driven by clever editing and beautiful shots \u2013 particularly in the dark.<\/p><p>It&rsquo;s a film about the Holocaust, and about childhood through the fable of an Anne Frank in Ukraine, a way of looking at history from the small cracks. Although the story of children hidden in order to be saved is well known, it is rarely told through the eyes of those directly concerned, as is the case here, where two personal stories meet to create a complementary relationship. Looking like an angel in the half-light, Hugo becomes the angel of his own guardian angel as they both learn to understand each other&rsquo;s world. He is the mute witness to a fading world, where childhood fades into solitude. His former life, the people he loves \u2013 his mother, his cousin \u2013 appear only in his memories, filling his imagination, sometimes as real as his flesh and bones when he shivers with cold, uncertainty and lack of tenderness. This is an intimate, harsh and romantic story whose narrative elegantly blends dreams, memories and the reality of a life confined to (re)imagination. Ultimately, it&rsquo;s the journey of a child from darkness to a desire for life, while the heralded arrival of Soviet soldiers \u2013 supposedly a relief for the population \u2013 is actually the beginning of another nightmare&#8230;<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section
