nomm\u00e9 Paradis, une petite famille somalienne tente de r\u00eaver et de rester optimiste. Mamargade fait de son mieux pour rendre service \u00e0 sa communaut\u00e9 et pour que son fils Cigaal se rende \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole, tandis que sa s\u0153ur Araweelo d\u00e9sire ouvrir une petite \u00e9choppe de v\u00eatements.<\/p><p>Premier long-m\u00e9trage du r\u00e9alisateur austro-somalien Maxamed Harawe \u2013 dit Mo Harawe \u2013, \u00ab Le village aux portes du paradis \u00bb s\u2019\u00e9loigne consid\u00e9rablement des clich\u00e9s rab\u00e2ch\u00e9s par des Occidentaux incapables de placer la Corne de l\u2019Afrique sur une carte ou de d\u00e9tacher la Somalie de la piraterie, de la guerre civile ou du terrorisme islamiste qu\u2019ils ne cherchent m\u00eame pas \u00e0 comprendre. Le cin\u00e9aste n\u00e9 \u00e0 Mogadiscio d\u00e9peint au contraire dans ce film une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 certes affect\u00e9e par les quotidiennes attaques de drones et les incommensurables difficult\u00e9s \u00e9conomiques, mais forte et soud\u00e9e face \u00e0 l\u2019adversit\u00e9.<\/p><p>\u00c0 travers un triple portrait inscrit dans une forme de chronique de la vie locale, Mo Harawe pr\u00e9sente des personnages droits et dignes qui rev\u00eatent \u00e0 leur fa\u00e7on les d\u00e9fis du quotidien somalien : Cigaal souhaite rester dans son village malgr\u00e9 la fermeture de son \u00e9cole et ne pas \u00e9tudier en ville dans un pensionnat priv\u00e9, pendant qu\u2019Araweelo affronte les obstacles financiers et sociaux avec son projet de boutique en t\u00eate, et tandis que Mamargade encha\u00eene les petits boulots et les coups de main, quitte \u00e0 accumuler les probl\u00e8mes. Le film embrasse de surcro\u00eet la notion plus large de famille qui englobe \u00e0 la fois les proches, les voisins et les clans \u2013 ces derniers structurant la nation somalie depuis des si\u00e8cles \u2013, famille dans laquelle on partage certes les douleurs et les peines, mais aussi des moments plus l\u00e9gers et plus heureux.<\/p><p>Offrant aussi pour mots leurs regards et silences battus par le vent, les personnages sont jou\u00e9s par des non professionnels recrut\u00e9s sur place (\u00e0 l\u2019instar d\u2019une tr\u00e8s grande partie de l\u2019\u00e9quipe du long-m\u00e9trage), ce qui renforce l\u2019authenticit\u00e9 et le r\u00e9alisme des diff\u00e9rentes intrigues \u2013 l\u2019exemple le plus \u00e9vocateur \u00e9tant l\u2019incapacit\u00e9 de Cigaal dans sa nouvelle \u00e9cole \u00e0 lire l\u2019arabe, lui qui n\u2019\u00e9crit et parle qu\u2019en somali. Mamargade does his best to help his community and get his son Cigaal to school, while his sister Araweelo wants to open a small clothing shop.<\/p><p>The debut feature from Austrian-Somalian director Maxamed Harawe \u2013 aka Mo Harawe \u2013 \u201cThe Village Next to Paradise\u201d is a far cry from the clich\u00e9s perpetuated by Westerners unable to locate the Horn of Africa on a map, or to detach Somalia from the piracy, civil war and Islamist terrorism they don&rsquo;t even try to understand. On the contrary, the Mogadishu-born filmmaker&rsquo;s film depicts not only a society affected by daily drone attacks and immeasurable economic difficulties, but also one that is strong and united in the face of adversity.<\/p><p>In a triple portrait that chronicles local life, Mo Harawe depicts upright, dignified characters who take on the challenges of everyday Somalian life in their own way: Cigaal wants to stay in his village despite the closing of his school and not study in the city at a private boarding school, while Araweelo faces financial and social obstacles with her store business project, and Mamargade takes on a series of odd jobs and extra services to help out, even if it means accumulating problems. The film also embraces the broader notion of family, encompassing relatives, neighbors and clans \u2013 the latter of which have structured the Somali nation for centuries \u2013 a family in which pain and sorrow are shared, but also lighter, happier moments.<\/p><p>The characters are played by non-professionals cast on location (as is the case for a large part of the film&rsquo;s crew), offering words in the form of gazes and silences beaten by the wind, which adds to the authenticity and realism of the various plots \u2013 the most striking example being Cigaal&rsquo;s inability to read Arabic in his new school, as he only writes and speaks Somali. With cinematography by Egyptian Mostafa El-Kashef, the film&rsquo;s visual impact conveys the idea of its title: a place that is both colorful and parched, potentially paradisiacal but not really, notwithstanding the few (sometimes almost automatic) hopes of the people who live there. \u201cThe Village Next to Paradise\u201d therefore shows a beautiful but little-known facet of a resilient people who, despite their torments, look to the future.<\/p><p>Axel
