D\u2019entr\u00e9e, les autres filles se moquent d\u2019elle parce qu\u2019elle boite, parce que son maillot fait trop gamine, bref pour une raison ou une autre mais toujours une question d\u2019apparence\u00a0! Une telle sc\u00e8ne d\u2019ouverture pourrait sugg\u00e9rer un film sur les tensions entre adolescentes et le harc\u00e8lement, mais tr\u00e8s vite ces tensions sont outrepass\u00e9es pour s\u2019attaquer aux r\u00eaves des filles du coin de quitter cette petite ville mini\u00e8re et partir quelque part \u2026 ailleurs\u00a0!\u00a0 Une \u00e9cole de mannequins vaguement louche o\u00f9 le tour de cuisse impose sa loi repr\u00e9sente alors l\u2019occasion pour ces filles de saisir leur chance dans ce monde loin de tout o\u00f9 la beaut\u00e9 peut faire voyager jusqu\u2019au Japon.<\/p><p>Pour son premier film la jeune r\u00e9alisatrice lituanienne Saul\u0117 Bliuvait\u0117 signe un film qui aborde cette p\u00e9riode bouleversante entre l\u2019enfance et l\u2019adolescence o\u00f9 le corps change. Oui c\u2019est un film sur le corps et le mannequinat, mais surtout sur une communaut\u00e9 paum\u00e9e et plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment sur une fille paum\u00e9e dans cette communaut\u00e9. Si les personnages sont en marges de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, la marginalit\u00e9 n\u2019est \u2013 elle \u2013 jamais le sujet. C\u2019est bien plus un film sur l\u2019amiti\u00e9 et l\u2019imperfection o\u00f9 les promesses d\u2019une vie meilleure poussent certes \u00e0 brutaliser son corps, mais aussi \u00e0 gagner en confiance en soi, en camaraderie et en complicit\u00e9. Car le c\u0153ur de \u00ab\u00a0Toxic\u00a0\u00bb se trouve dans l\u2019\u00e9volution de la relation entre ces deux jeunes filles qui prom\u00e8nent partout un air maussade, d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9sillusionn\u00e9es.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Toxic\u00a0\u00bb c\u2019est le r\u00eave du beau \u00e0 l\u2019horizon Tchernobyl. Les tons ternes et gris\u00e2tres du paysage industriel d\u00e9sol\u00e9 contrastent ainsi fortement avec les v\u00eatements et les aspirations de ces filles qui r\u00eavent d\u2019\u00e9chapper \u00e0 la morosit\u00e9 de leur quartier. La toxicit\u00e9 du titre international renvoie ainsi non seulement au vide environnant qui empoisonne (l\u2019imaginaire de) cette jeunesse, mais aussi au rapport au corps dans la mesure o\u00f9 chaque personnage a une sorte de \u2018d\u00e9faut\u2019 physique ou du moins consid\u00e8re en avoir (fille g\u00e9ante\u00a0; mains tremblantes). C\u2019est donc un monde plein d\u2019imperfections qui se confronte \u00e0 celui de la perfection par essence\u00a0: le mannequinat.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19775 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3555.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3555.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3555-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3555-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3555-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Mais ce n\u2019est pas un film sur des top-mod\u00e8les, il n\u2019y a aucune dimension voyeuriste puisque la r\u00e9alisatrice cr\u00e9e une certaine distance avec ses protagonistes y compris dans l\u2019image avec des plans larges, parfois lointains, o\u00f9 les personnages sont \u00e0 peine dans le cadre. Si c\u2019est un film con\u00e7u avec certes peu de moyens, les plans sont en revanche tr\u00e8s r\u00e9fl\u00e9chis avec un choix unique de plans fixes dans des cadres parfois atypiques et o\u00f9 l\u2019on perd \u00e0 d\u2019autres moments les personnages dont l\u2019action se d\u00e9roule en arri\u00e8re-plan ce qui rend l\u2019environnement autant sujet de la sc\u00e8ne que ses personnages. C\u2019est ainsi un film qui joue sur le vide de certains plans (visuellement), voire de certaines sc\u00e8nes (narrativement) pour souligner ce \u2018cadre\u2019 toxique. Mais ce vide de l\u2019environnement qui sert aussi le propos du film, ne permet pas toujours de cr\u00e9er une histoire prenante ou tr\u00e8s \u00e9mouvante.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Toxic\u00a0\u00bb est un film port\u00e9 par les superbes performances des actrices d\u00e9butantes Vesta Matulyt\u00e9 &amp; Ieva Rupeikait\u00e9, et une atmosph\u00e8re de rudesse authentique avec quasiment z\u00e9ro musique. C\u2019est un film sensible, lent, et d\u00e9licat sur des fragments de vie, de sensations jet\u00e9es sur l\u2019\u00e9cran de mani\u00e8re assez brute o\u00f9 les corps parlent et expriment souffrance, solitude et espoir. From the outset, the other girls make fun of her because she has a limp, or because her bathing suit is too childish \u2013 in short, for one reason or another, but always a matter of appearance! Such an opening scene might suggest a film about teenage drama and bullying, but it&rsquo;s not long before these tensions are overtaken by the local girls&rsquo; dreams of leaving this small mining town and going somewhere&#8230; elsewhere!\u00a0 A vaguely shady modeling school, where thigh size is everything, then represents an opportunity for these girls to seize their chance in this far-flung world, where beauty can take you all the way to Japan.<\/p><p>For her first feature film, the young Lithuanian director Saul\u0117 Bliuvait\u0117 makes a film that deals with that overwhelming period between childhood and adolescence when the body changes. Yes, it&rsquo;s a film about the body and modeling, but above all it&rsquo;s about a lost community and, more specifically, a lost girl in that community. While the characters are on the fringe of society, marginality is never the theme. It&rsquo;s much more a film about friendship and imperfection, where the promise of a better life leads to the brutalization of the body, but also to greater self-confidence, companionship and complicity. For the heart of \u201cToxic\u201d lies in the evolution of the relationship between these two young girls, who are already looking sullen and disillusioned.<\/p><p>\u201cToxic\u201d is the dream of beauty on the Chernobyl horizon. The dull, grayish tones of the desolate industrial landscape contrast sharply with the clothes and aspirations of these girls who dream of escaping the gloom of their neighborhood. The toxicity of the international title thus refers not only to the surrounding emptiness that poisons (the imaginations of) these young people, but also to the relationship with the body insofar as each character has some sort of physical \u2018flaw\u2019 or at least considers themselves to have one (giant girl; trembling hands). So, it&rsquo;s a world full of imperfections that comes face to face with the ultimate world of perfection: modeling.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19775 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3555.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3555.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3555-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3555-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3555-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>But this isn&rsquo;t a film about supermodels, and there&rsquo;s no voyeuristic dimension, since the director creates a certain distance from her protagonists, including in the frame, with wide, sometimes distant shots where the characters are barely in the frame. Although the film&rsquo;s resources are admittedly limited, the shots are very well thought-out, with a unique choice of still shots in sometimes atypical frames, where at other times we lose the characters, whose action takes place in the background, making the environment just as much the focus of the scene as its characters. It&rsquo;s a film that draws on the emptiness of certain shots (visually), and even certain scenes (narratively), to underline this toxic \u201cmilieu\u201d. However, this emptiness of the environment, which also underlines the film&rsquo;s purpose, doesn&rsquo;t always make for a gripping or very moving story.<\/p><p>\u201cToxic\u201d is a movie driven by wonderful performances from first-time actresses Vesta Matulyt\u00e9 &amp; Ieva Rupeikait\u00e9, and an atmosphere of authentic harshness with almost zero music.
