port\u00e9 par des promesses sociales poussant une partie de la diaspora \u00e0 retourner sur ses terres natales. Mais ce mouvement domin\u00e9 par des forces religieuses dirig\u00e9es par l\u2019Ayatollah Khomeini aboutit finalement \u00e0 un r\u00e9gime th\u00e9ocratique \u2013 Surprise\u00a0! \u2013 qui vit la situation des femmes se d\u00e9grader progressivement et leurs libert\u00e9s restreintes.<\/p><p>Confront\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019imposition du voile, \u00e0 la censure et \u00e0 la r\u00e9pression, une professeure de litt\u00e9rature anglaise \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 de T\u00e9h\u00e9ran qui vient de retourner au pays, va alors organiser secr\u00e8tement un club de lecture avec six de ses \u00e9tudiantes pour y lire des classiques de la litt\u00e9rature occidentale interdits par le r\u00e9gime. Lorsque ces femmes se retrouvent, elles retirent leur voile, trouvent des \u00e9chos \u00e0 leur situation et des outils de r\u00e9sistance dans ces dangereux \u2018br\u00fblots\u2019, et discutent non seulement de leurs angoisses et peurs mais aussi de leurs espoirs et amours. Pour elles, lire \u00ab\u00a0Lolita\u00a0\u00bb de Vladimir Nabokov ou \u00ab\u00a0Orgueil et Pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb de Jane Austen c\u2019est c\u00e9l\u00e9brer le pouvoir de la litt\u00e9rature, et c\u2019est r\u00e9sister \u00e0 leur mani\u00e8re, comme une forme de clandestinit\u00e9.<\/p><p>D\u2019apr\u00e8s le roman autobiographique d\u2019Azar Nafisi, \u00ab\u00a0Lire Lolita \u00e0 T\u00e9h\u00e9ran\u00a0\u00bb est une fresque f\u00e9minine engag\u00e9e qui m\u00eale sur trois d\u00e9cennies des relations humaines \u00e0 des enjeux politiques et raconte comment le r\u00e9gime des Mollahs cherche \u00e0 contr\u00f4ler la culture, les id\u00e9es et la libert\u00e9 d\u2019expression. Il met en lumi\u00e8re la litt\u00e9rature comme acte de r\u00e9sistance \u2013 et en particulier pour les femmes \u2013 en explorant la relation entre la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 politique et sociale du pays et les formes de r\u00e9sistance aux codes en vigueur en Occident \u00e0 travers certaines figures f\u00e9minines de l\u2019affranchissement. Mais si le sujet est en effet fort et tr\u00e8s important \u2013 d\u2019autant qu\u2019il r\u00e9sonne aujourd\u2019hui avec le mouvement \u2018Femme, Vie, Libert\u00e9\u2019 en Iran \u2013 c\u2019est un film tourn\u00e9 en Italie avec une troupe de com\u00e9diennes toutes exil\u00e9es (et courageuses, certes) mais avant tout destin\u00e9 au public occidental qui souligne \u00e9norm\u00e9ment son propos et manque cruellement d\u2019une subtilit\u00e9 qui a fait la richesse du cin\u00e9ma iranien. Tourn\u00e9 par le r\u00e9alisateur isra\u00e9lien Eran Riklis, c\u2019est finalement un t\u00e9moignage p\u00e9tri de bons sentiments mais qui n\u2019en fait pas un bon film avec une mise en sc\u00e8ne assez neutre, des dialogues particuli\u00e8rement explicatifs, et des personnages r\u00e9duits \u00e0 une unique id\u00e9e ou position sans vrai d\u00e9veloppement.<\/p><p>Par ailleurs, s\u2019il y a bien une sc\u00e8ne dans chaque chapitre qui fait un parall\u00e8le de qualit\u00e9 entre le livre \u00e9tudi\u00e9 et la situation sociale iranienne, le chapitrage o\u00f9 les titres des classiques de la litt\u00e9rature se substituent aux \u00e9tapes de la vie de la protagoniste, n\u2019apporte finalement pas grand-chose et survole son contexte historique (notamment la guerre d\u2019Irak et son d\u00e9sastre social sur la jeunesse). \u00ab\u00a0Lire Lolita \u00e0 T\u00e9h\u00e9ran\u00a0\u00bb a donc le m\u00e9rite d\u2019\u00e9taler des faits historiques essentiels \u00e0 souligner, mais souffre d\u2019une structure elliptique, d\u2019un sc\u00e9nario didactique et d\u2019un message convenu \u2013 l\u2019on d\u00e9couvre en 2025 que les femmes sont opprim\u00e9es en Iran depuis 45 ans \u2013 qui le rend au final et malheureusement un peu ennuyeux. But this movement, dominated by religious forces led by Ayatollah Khomeini, ultimately brought forth a theocratic regime \u2013 surprise! \u2013 which saw the status of women progressively decline and their liberties restricted.<\/p><p>Confronted with the imposition of the veil, censorship and repression, a recently returning professor of English literature at Tehran University secretly organizes a book club with six of her female students to read Western classics banned by the regime. When the women get together, they remove their veils, find echoes of their situation and tools of resistance in these dangerous books, and discuss not only their anxieties and fears, but also their hopes and passions. For them, reading Vladimir Nabokov&rsquo;s \u201cLolita\u201d or Jane Austen&rsquo;s \u201cPride and Prejudice\u201d is to celebrate the power of literature, and to resist in their own way, as a form of clandestinity.<\/p><p>Based on Azar Nafisi&rsquo;s autobiographical novel, \u201cReading Lolita in Teheran\u201d is a committed women&rsquo;s portrait that blends human relationships with political issues over three decades, and tells the story of how the regime of the Mullahs seeks to control culture, ideas and freedom of expression. It highlights literature as an act of resistance \u2013 particularly for women \u2013 exploring the relationship between the country&rsquo;s political and social reality and the various forms of resistance to Western codes through certain female figures of emancipation. But while the subject matter is indeed strong and important \u2013 especially as it resonates today with the &lsquo;Woman, Life, Freedom&rsquo; movement in Iran \u2013 this film, shot in Italy with a cast of actresses, all exiled (and brave, for sure) but primarily aimed at Western audiences, overemphasizes its subject matter and sorely lacks the subtlety that has made Iranian cinema so vibrant. Shot by Israeli director Eran Riklis, it&rsquo;s a testimony full of noble intentions, but that doesn&rsquo;t make it a good film, with fairly indifferent direction, particularly expository dialogue, and characters reduced to a single idea or stance with no real development.<\/p><p>Moreover, while there is a scene in each chapter that draws a meaningful parallel between the book studied and the social situation in Iran, the chaptering, in which the titles of classic works of literature are substituted for the stages in the protagonist&rsquo;s life, ultimately adds little and overlooks its historical context (notably the Iraq war and its social disaster for young people). \u201cReading Lolita in Teheran\u201d therefore does lay out essential historical facts, but suffers from an elliptical structure, a didactic script and an obvious message \u2013 we discover in 2025 that women have been oppressed in Iran for 45 years \u2013 which makes it ultimately and unfortunately a little boring.
