Il y eut le Printemps arabe en 2011, le Printemps des peuples bien avant cela en 1848, et bien s\u00fbr le Printemps de Prague en 1968 o\u00f9 la fi\u00e8vre (avec tout ce pollen) \u00e9mancipatrice de la R\u00e9publique socialiste tch\u00e9coslovaque apporta une nouvelle nuance \u00e0 la bipolarit\u00e9 des deux blocs herm\u00e9tiquement s\u00e9par\u00e9s par le rideau de fer, en exp\u00e9rimentant un certain \u2018socialisme \u00e0 visage humain\u2019 qui ne plaisait gu\u00e8re \u00e0 Moscou. Le film raconte ce moment d\u2019exaltation populaire et de luttes politiques depuis l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de la radio d\u2019\u00c9tat, pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment depuis la r\u00e9daction des informations internationales o\u00f9 le charismatique Milan Weiner dirige une \u00e9quipe de journalistes attentive \u00e0 d\u00e9m\u00ealer l\u2019information de propagande pour faire entendre autant que possible la voix de la v\u00e9rit\u00e9. Il raconte l\u2019un des moments les plus embl\u00e9matiques de l\u2019Histoire tch\u00e9coslovaque, \u00e0 savoir l\u2019invasion du pays par les troupes du Pacte de Varsovie, sous l\u2019angle de journalistes lan\u00e7ant leurs derni\u00e8res forces dans la bataille pour la libert\u00e9 d\u2019expression \u2026<\/p><p>C\u2019est un film qui entrelace la petite et la grande Histoire en imposant aux individus les plus ordinaires de choisir leur camp\u00a0: se battre pour un id\u00e9al ou sauver sa peau. C\u2019est une histoire de super-h\u00e9ros de la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 au sein d\u2019une r\u00e9daction de journalistes qui boulevers\u00e8rent les r\u00e8gles du journalisme d\u2019alors, pour diffuser \u00e0 la population des informations non censur\u00e9es. Tous les personnages ont ainsi vraiment exist\u00e9 \u2013 le r\u00e9cit \u00e9tant en cela tr\u00e8s historique et r\u00e9aliste \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019exception du r\u00f4le principal Tom\u00e1\u0161 Havl\u00edk qui symbolise non seulement les citoyens ordinaires de l\u2019\u00e9poque, mais sert aussi de fil rouge \u00e0 la fois pour nous faire entrer au sein de cette vibrante r\u00e9daction et donc au c\u0153ur d\u2019un mouvement de r\u00e9sistance journalistique, ainsi que pour raconter les modes d\u2019action et d\u2019infiltration de la police secr\u00e8te du r\u00e9gime totalitaire.<\/p><p>Si le film n\u2019a rien de r\u00e9volutionnaire dans sa forme et souffre de quelques sc\u00e8nes en trop quand la suggestion ou l\u2019implicite aurait suffi, \u00ab\u00a0Radio Prague\u00a0\u00bb b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie d\u2019une vraie force documentaire en m\u00eame temps qu\u2019il d\u00e9ploie un palpitant thriller, entre suspense et v\u00e9rit\u00e9 historique, avec une seconde partie particuli\u00e8rement captivante et une fin tr\u00e8s r\u00e9ussie. Misant sur l\u2019authenticit\u00e9 et la plong\u00e9e dans les pages de l\u2019Histoire, il r\u00e9ussit un gros travail d\u2019\u00e9talonnage pour retrouver les couleurs et la texture des images de l\u2019\u00e9poque m\u00ealant ainsi dans certaines sc\u00e8nes de nombreuses images d\u2019archives avec ses propres personnages. Ecrit et r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par Ji\u0159\u00ed M\u00e1dl, ce film tr\u00e8s acclam\u00e9 en R\u00e9publique Tch\u00e8que loue le courage, l\u2019engagement et l\u2019inventivit\u00e9 de ces professionnels des \u2018ondes\u2019 (titre original) qui ont marqu\u00e9 l\u2019Histoire de leur pays \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019image d\u2019un potentiel clin d\u2019\u0153il (ou alors splendide co\u00efncidence) au symbole martyr Jan Palach. There was the Arab Spring in 2011, the springtime of the peoples long before that in 1848, and of course the Prague Spring in 1968, when the emancipating fever (with all that spring pollen) of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic brought a new shade to the bipolarity of the two blocs hermetically sealed by the Iron Curtain, by experimenting with a form of &lsquo;socialism with a human face&rsquo; that did not sit well with Moscow. The film tells the story of this moment of popular excitement and political struggle from inside state radio, precisely from the international newsroom, where the charismatic Milan Weiner heads a team of journalists dedicated to untangling propaganda from news, to ensure that the voice of truth is heard as loudly as possible. It tells the story of one of the most emblematic moments in Czechoslovak history \u2013 the invasion of the country by Warsaw Pact troops \u2013 from the point of view of reporters throwing their last efforts into the battle for freedom of expression&#8230;<\/p><p>This is a film that blends the small and the big stories of history, forcing ordinary people to choose a side: to fight for an ideal or to save their own skin. It&rsquo;s a story of truth-telling superheroes in a newsroom where journalists challenged the rules of journalism of the time, in order to get uncensored information out to the public. All the characters truly existed \u2013 making the story highly historical and realistic \u2013 with the exception of the lead role, Tom\u00e1\u0161 Havl\u00edk, who not only represents the ordinary citizens of the time, but also acts as a guiding light, taking us into the heart of this vibrant editorial team, and thus into the heart of a journalistic resistance movement, as well as revealing the ways in which the totalitarian regime&rsquo;s secret police acted and infiltrated.<\/p><p>While the film&rsquo;s form is far from revolutionary, and suffers from a few scenes too many when suggestion or implicit language would have sufficed, \u201cWaves\u201d displays a real documentary force, while at the same time unfolding a gripping thriller, somewhere between suspense and historical truth, with a particularly captivating second half and a very strong ending. Emphasizing authenticity and an immersion into the pages of history, the film&rsquo;s color-grading and textures are reminiscent of the images of the time, and in certain scenes, extensive archival footage is combined with the film&rsquo;s own characters with great effect. Written and directed by Ji\u0159\u00ed M\u00e1dl, this highly praised film in the Czech Republic celebrates the courage, commitment and inventiveness of these professionals of the &lsquo;\u2019waves\u2019 who left their mark on their country&rsquo;s history \u2013 with a potential nod (or just a wonderful coincidence) to the martyred symbol Jan Palach.
