Palestiniens est de ne pas finir l\u00e0 d\u2019o\u00f9 ils viennent, mais dans un endroit inattendu et lointain<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, autrement dit, vers un pays inconnu\u00a0\u2026 annonce d\u00e8s l\u2019ouverture du film la citation d\u2019Edward Sa\u00efd. Si la Palestine est un peuple en guerre, c\u2019est en fait une mosa\u00efque de situations qui comprend notamment et depuis longtemps, l\u2019exil. D\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1960, les r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s palestiniens traversaient le d\u00e9sert pour essayer de trouver du travail au Koweit, aujourd\u2019hui le nouveau d\u00e9sert urbain qu\u2019il doivent franchir n\u2019est autre que la Gr\u00e8ce\u00a0! Ath\u00e8nes s\u2019impose alors comme un <em>no man\u2019s land<\/em> oriental au sein de l\u2019Europe, une zone de transit o\u00f9 cohabitent des hommes de tous pays dans des squats surpeupl\u00e9s o\u00f9 la fraternit\u00e9 n\u2019a plus sa place. La capitale grecque devient alors leur nouvelle prison d\u2019o\u00f9 il faut s\u2019enfuir \u2026<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s un documentaire et plusieurs courts-m\u00e9trages filmant l\u2019exil au camp d\u2019Ein el-Helweh, le r\u00e9alisateur dano-palestinien (et dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 \u00e0 Londres) Mahdi Fleifel signe ici son premier long-m\u00e9trage de fiction en nous embarquant dans l\u2019histoire de deux cousins \u00e9chou\u00e9s \u00e0 Ath\u00e8nes qui ont laiss\u00e9 ce qui leur restait d\u2019attaches au Liban. Interdits de s\u00e9jour chez eux et rejet\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger, ce sont des Palestiniens errants, sans papiers qui, dans leurs r\u00eaves les plus raisonnablement fous, esp\u00e8rent partir en Allemagne pour y ouvrir un caf\u00e9. Pour cela ils \u00e9conomisent patiemment et \u00e9chafaudent plan bancal sur plan bancal sur un chemin sem\u00e9 d\u2019emb\u00fbches. Convaincus qu\u2019ils n\u2019ont pas grand-chose \u00e0 perdre, ils multiplient les tentatives frauduleuses jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019ils rencontrent un jeune gazaoui et une femme grecque les entra\u00eenant dans une arnaque plus dangereuse \u2026<\/p><p>C\u2019est une fiction \u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re du documentaire qui emprunte au <em>buddy movie<\/em> et au <em>thriller<\/em> qui filme le d\u00e9racinement et la douleur de l\u2019attente qui nous demande comment survivre une fois d\u00e9pouill\u00e9s de tout\u00a0: droits, citoyennet\u00e9, argent, ou dignit\u00e9. C\u2019est un film \u00e2pre d\u00e9crivant les tr\u00e9fonds de l\u2019exil sans jamais juger ses personnages pi\u00e9g\u00e9s moralement par leur situation d\u2019exil\u00e9s. Une situation faite d\u2019accumulation d\u2019impasses qui les pousse \u00e0 franchir des limites, laissant une part d\u2019eux-m\u00eames derri\u00e8re eux. Et c\u2019est bien le seul voyage qu\u2019ils entreprennent car c\u2019est une odyss\u00e9e de l\u2019immobile encha\u00een\u00e9e \u00e0 sa destin\u00e9e de non-d\u00e9part, ou comment r\u00eaver mille travers\u00e9es en tentant tant bien que mal de pouvoir d\u00e9j\u00e0 partir. \u00ab\u00a0Vers un pays inconnu\u00a0\u00bb renvoie ainsi aussi bien \u00e0 cet ailleurs hors-champ (potentiellement l\u2019Allemagne), qu\u2019\u00e0 cet engrenage de la d\u00e9shumanisation poussant des hommes ordinaires \u00e0 s\u2019exploiter entre compagnons de mis\u00e8re.<\/p><p>Tourn\u00e9 en pellicule 16mm \u00e0 Ath\u00e8nes, \u00ab Vers un pays inconnu \u00bb nous marque par son ton et sa forme naturaliste, dont le grand r\u00e9alisme est port\u00e9 par un tr\u00e8s bon duo de jeunes acteurs avec Mahmood Bakri qui se d\u00e9bat face \u00e0 la culpabilit\u00e9 de ce qu\u2019il est devenu et dont c\u2019est le deuxi\u00e8me film, et Aram Sabbah, un skateur professionnel dont c\u2019est le premier film, dans un r\u00f4le plus fragile et r\u00eaveur \u2013 tous deux incarnant deux facettes d\u2019une m\u00eame personne : le r\u00e9fugi\u00e9. If Palestine is a nation at war, it is actually a complex mosaic of situations, including, and for a long time now, exile. Back in the 1960s, Palestinian refugees crossed the desert to try and find work in Kuwait; today, the new urban desert they have to cross is none other than Greece! Athens has then become an eastern no-man&rsquo;s-land in the heart of Europe, a transit area where people from all over the world live together in overcrowded squats where brotherhood no longer exists. The Greek capital thus becomes the new prison they must escape from&#8230;<\/p><p>After a documentary and several short films filming exile in the Ein el-Helweh camp, Danish-Palestinian (and London-educated) director Mahdi Fleifel directs his first feature film, taking us on a journey through the story of two cousins stranded in Athens, who have left what remains of their family ties in Lebanon. Banned at home and rejected abroad, they are undocumented wandering Palestinians who, in their wildest dreams, hope to move to Germany to open a caf\u00e9. To do so, they patiently save up and draw up wobbly plan after wobbly plan on a path strewn with pitfalls. Believing they have little to lose, they keep on making unscrupulous attempts, until they meet a young Gazan and a Greek woman, leading them into a more dangerous scam&#8230;<\/p><p>This is a fiction on the edge of documentary, borrowing from the buddy movie and the thriller genre, filming uprooting and the pain of longing, and asking how to survive once stripped of everything: rights, citizenship, money or dignity. It&rsquo;s a harsh film, describing the depths of exile without ever judging its characters, morally trapped by their situation as exiles. A situation made up of an endless series of dead-ends that pushes them to cross limits, leaving a part of themselves behind. And it&rsquo;s the only journey they undertake, for it&rsquo;s an odyssey of the motionless, chained to its destiny of non-departure, or how to dream of a thousand journeys while trying, as best they can, to at least be able to leave. \u201cTo a Land Unknown\u201d therefore refers both to this off-screen elsewhere (potentially Germany), and to the downward spiral of dehumanization that drives ordinary men to turn on one another as companions in misery.<\/p><p>Shot on 16mm film in Athens, \u201cTo a Land Unknown\u201d stands out for its naturalistic tone and style, whose great realism is driven by an excellent duo of young actors, with Mahmood Bakri, who struggles with guilt over what he has become and whose second film this is, and Aram Sabbah, a professional skateboarder whose first film this is, in a more fragile, dreamy role \u2013 both embodying two faces of the same person: the refugee. Despite a few moments that are a little too long, and one plot point that is too unclear, this is a beautiful film about Palestinian youth eternally trapped (Gaza, Lebanon, Greece&#8230;) and doomed to exile in a spiral of hope and disillusionment.<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
