r\u00e9invent\u00e9 le r\u00e9cit de fant\u00f4me dans \u00ab\u00a0Presence\u00a0\u00bb, Steven Soderbergh revient avec un nouvel exercice de style radicalement diff\u00e9rent\u00a0en investissant \u00e0 nouveau un domicile conjugal pour encore une fois subvertir un genre, cette fois, le thriller d\u2019espionnage\u00a0!<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Black Bag\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0The Insider\u00a0\u00bb (en VF) est ainsi un film d\u2019espionnage en apparence tr\u00e8s classique construit sur une intrigue \u00e0 l\u2019ancienne parsem\u00e9e de modernit\u00e9 (Stuxnet\u00a0; guerre russe) la rendant assez intemporelle, et qui s\u2019int\u00e9resse avant tout au couple form\u00e9 par un Michael Fassbender tout en froideur analytique d\u00e9pouill\u00e9e de toute \u00e9motion, et une Cate Blanchett pleine de classe meurtri\u00e8re et de myst\u00e8re soyeux. Au c\u0153ur du r\u00e9cit se trouve en effet ce mariage atypique entre deux espions dont le m\u00e9tier n\u2019est autre que le mensonge et dont la fragile relation tient pourtant sur la confiance. Derri\u00e8re une intrigue m\u00ealant des motifs classiques du genre (une taupe \u00e0 d\u00e9busquer et un virus informatique), se cache donc un film d\u2019amour qui interroge la sinc\u00e9rit\u00e9 d\u2019une relation v\u00e9cue par deux espions. C\u2019est un film d\u2019espionnage sans chor\u00e9graphie de combat, sans course-poursuite, et sans gadget ou coup de feu. C\u2019est un peu un anti James Bond qui s\u2019en amuse \u00e0 travers ses personnages secondaires notamment jou\u00e9s par Naomi Harris (l\u2019actrice de Moneypenny dans la saga Craig), Reg\u00e9 Jean-Pierre (qui \u00e9tait notamment pressenti pour le r\u00f4le de 007), ainsi que Pierce Brosnan (qui a \u00e9videmment interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 la figure du MI-6 \u00e0 quatre reprises) aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des tr\u00e8s bons Tom Burke (Three Musketeers) et Marisa Abela (Back to Black).<\/p><p>Le sc\u00e9nario, \u00e0 nouveau \u00e9crit par David Koepp, rappelle \u00e0 premi\u00e8re vue \u00ab Mr. &amp; Ms. Smith \u00bb mais s\u2019en diff\u00e8re aussi bien dans l\u2019intrigue que dans le ton. Il joue avec les codes du film d\u2019espionnage en alignant fausses pistes et rebondissements, en diss\u00e9minant de nombreux indices, et en instaurant un soup\u00e7on g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9 avec cette liste de potentielles taupes fournie d\u00e8s l\u2019ouverture du film. Cette d\u00e9limitation des enjeux et du cadre du r\u00e9cit \u2013 avec seulement une semaine pour tirer cette affaire au clair \u2013 d\u00e8s le d\u00e9part cr\u00e9e une unit\u00e9 de temps rythmant le film et renfor\u00e7ant son suspense. Faussement simpliste, ce sc\u00e9nario manipulateur d\u00e9tourne ces caract\u00e9ristiques de l\u2019espionnage pour d\u00e9velopper ses personnages et peindre un tableau nuanc\u00e9 (sans vrai m\u00e9chant), empreint d\u2019humour (avec notamment l\u2019excellente sc\u00e8ne du polygraphe), et \u00e9crit au cordeau avec d\u2019excellents dialogues. En somme, c\u2019est un peu un John Le Carr\u00e9 sur le couple, o\u00f9 la mise en lumi\u00e8re des secrets de chacun joue autant sur la guerre que sur le mariage \u00e0 l\u2019image de la sc\u00e8ne tr\u00e8s caustique du d\u00eener entre couples saupoudr\u00e9s au syndrome de v\u00e9rit\u00e9 (nationale ou conjugale) dans le halo palpitant des photophores.<\/p><p>La lumi\u00e8re tient justement un r\u00f4le phare dans la mise en sc\u00e8ne de Steven Soderbergh \u2013 qui filme et monte lui-m\u00eame ses films \u2013 en choisissant des \u00e9clairages presque toujours feutr\u00e9s qui donnent \u00e0 l\u2019image ce style chic et glamour. It focuses above all on the couple formed by Michael Fassbender, all analytical coldness stripped of all emotion, and Cate Blanchett, full of murderous class and velvety mystery. At the heart of the story lies this atypical marriage between two spies whose profession is nothing less than lying, yet whose fragile relationship is built on trust. Underlying a plot that combines classic motifs of the genre (a mole to uncover and a cyber-virus) lies a love story that questions the honesty of a relationship between two spies. This is a spy movie with no fight choreography, no chases, no gadgets or gunfire. It&rsquo;s a bit of an anti-James Bond film, which has fun with it, especially through its supporting characters such as Naomi Harris (Moneypenny&rsquo;s actress in the Craig saga), Reg\u00e9 Jean-Pierre (who was considered for the role of 007), and Pierce Brosnan (who, of course, played the MI-6 icon four times), alongside the great Tom Burke (Three Musketeers) and Marisa Abela (Back to Black).<\/p><p>The screenplay, once again written by David Koepp, looks like the premise of \u201cMr. &amp; Ms. Smith\u201d at first glance, but differs both plot-wise and tone-wise. It plays with the codes of the spy movie, throwing up false leads and twists and turns, dropping plenty of clues, and building suspicion across the board with the list of potential moles provided right at the beginning of the film. This setting of the stakes and the frame of the story \u2013 with only one week to clear up the case \u2013 right from the start creates a unity of time that brings pace and suspense to the film. Deceptively straightforward, this cleverly manipulative script turns these spy features into character development, portraying a nuanced picture (with no real villain), imbued with humor (including the brilliant polygraph scene) and crafted with impeccable dialogue. All in all, it&rsquo;s a bit of a John Le Carr\u00e9 on couples, where the spotlight on everyone&rsquo;s secrets affects the war as much as marriage, as in the very caustic dinner scene between couples peppered with a (national or marital) truth syndrome in the halo of glowing candlelight.<\/p><p>Light indeed plays a key role in the style of Steven Soderbergh \u2013 who shoots and edits his films himself \u2013 with lighting that is almost always soft, giving the picture that chic, glamorous look. The (American) director of \u201cOcean&rsquo;s 11\u201d, \u201cSex, Lies, and Videotape\u201d, as well as \u201cErin Brokovich\u201d therefore delivers an adult spy thriller, very (British) and very well crafted, both sharp and entertaining in barely 90 minutes, all of it featuring David Holmes&rsquo; lovely score.<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
