C\u2019est l\u2019arriv\u00e9e d\u2019un immigrant comme une ascension vers la lumi\u00e8re, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa d\u00e9couverte triomphale de la Statue de la Libert\u00e9 dans un cadrage instable et surtout o\u00f9 le flambeau d\u2019une statue qui porte au bout de son bras lev\u00e9 le R\u00eave am\u00e9ricain est \u2026 \u00e0 l\u2019envers\u00a0!<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0The Brutalist\u00a0\u00bb appara\u00eet d\u2019abord comme une anomalie dans le paysage cin\u00e9matographique actuel\u00a0de par son ambition narrative et esth\u00e9tique mais aussi de par sa construction. C\u2019est un film d\u2019auteur en deux grandes parties (Ouverture &amp; Chapitre 1 \/ Chapitre 2 &amp; \u00c9pilogue) divis\u00e9es par un entracte au milieu, qui couvre pas moins de trois d\u00e9cennies sur le destin douloureux d\u2019un immigr\u00e9 hongrois venu go\u00fbter au R\u00eave am\u00e9ricain en 1947. Ce personnage est un architecte visionnaire au pass\u00e9 indicible qui se retrouve dans une Pennsylvanie en plein boom alors que sa femme est encore sur le vieux continent. Il va (au sens propre comme figur\u00e9) se retrouver au charbon et dans la crasse jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019il fasse la rencontre (intellectuellement stimulante) d\u2019un richissime m\u00e9c\u00e8ne am\u00e9ricain reconnaissant sa valeur et lui commandant la construction d\u2019un \u00e9difice \u00e0 l\u2019image du film, \u00e0 savoir hors-normes et multifonction, tout comme cette \u0153uvre de 3h34 multipliant les th\u00e9matiques et m\u00e9taphores.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0The Brutalist\u00a0\u00bb est ainsi une fresque historique et intime, \u00e0 la fois macro et micro, qui parle donc bien s\u00fbr d\u2019architecture, mais ce n\u2019est pas l\u2019unique th\u00e8me du film qui est bien plus riche et ausculte aussi cette nation d\u2019immigration (avec le cousin parfait exemple d\u2019assimilation), ainsi que la discordance entre l\u2019art et l\u2019industrie ou encore le trauma d\u2019un artiste et celui d\u2019un couple. C\u2019est un film qui raconte \u00e0 la fois un homme, un pays, et un si\u00e8cle \u00e0 travers le portrait du leurre am\u00e9ricain et d\u2019une volont\u00e9 artistique. C\u2019est un film dense mais accessible, long mais sans longueur, et qui m\u00e9rite r\u00e9flexion.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18481 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Snapshot_3233.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Snapshot_3233.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Snapshot_3233-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Snapshot_3233-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Snapshot_3233-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Brady Corbet est en effet habitu\u00e9 aux histoires entrechoquant les th\u00e9matiques pour former un tout apr\u00e8s avoir r\u00e9alis\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0Vox Lux\u00a0\u00bb en 2018 qui diagnostiquait d\u00e9j\u00e0 une certaine Am\u00e9rique malade \u00e0 la fois par le biais de ses tueries lyc\u00e9ennes et de ses pop stars. Ici il s\u2019int\u00e9resse \u00e0 l\u2019influence majeure que la condition psychologique d\u2019une \u00e9poque, l\u2019apr\u00e8s-guerre, a pu avoir sur un mouvement architectural en inventant un personnage form\u00e9 au Bauhaus, en partie inspir\u00e9 de Marcel Breuer, et dont l\u2019architecture froide et oppressante cache l\u2019horreur dans la beaut\u00e9 de sa g\u00e9om\u00e9trie \u2026 ou comment un homme cherche de mani\u00e8re obsessionnelle \u00e0 se reconstruire dans l\u2019architecture jusqu\u2019\u00e0 y projeter ou y perdre une part de son \u00e2me. Adrien Brody (Le Pianiste) est quasiment de tous les plans pour incarner ce protagoniste embl\u00e9matique aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des excellents Guy Pearce (Memento) et Felicity Jones (Rogue One) dans des dialogues en anglais, hongrois et italien qui jouent avec minutie sur les diff\u00e9rences d\u2019accents et de vocabulaires des personnages.<\/p><p>R\u00e9compens\u00e9 \u00e0 Venise pour sa r\u00e9alisation, Brady Corbet met en sc\u00e8ne un style bien particulier \u00e0 commencer par son tournage en pellicule et <em>VistaVision<\/em> (un processus de d\u00e9filement horizontal de la pellicule qui \u00e9vite les distorsions) qui lui donne le format de photographies. Tourn\u00e9 presque int\u00e9gralement \u00e0 Budapest dans des d\u00e9cors impressionnants, le ton est aust\u00e8re avec ses plans sombres, ses couleurs ternes et d\u00e9satur\u00e9es, et sa musique omnipr\u00e9sente battant la cadence et r\u00e9sonnant encore longtemps apr\u00e8s la s\u00e9ance. Quasiment sans aucun champ\/contre-champ, mais plut\u00f4t avec de nombreux plans-s\u00e9quences y compris lors des sc\u00e8nes de dialogues, Corbet nous livre quelques sc\u00e8nes m\u00e9morables pour finir sur une cl\u00e9 secr\u00e8te de l\u2019\u0153uvre. Et \u00e0 l\u2019image du parcours de son protagoniste, la photographie \u00e9volue progressivement de la crasse \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re pour finir sur un \u00e9pilogue qui apporte un v\u00e9ritable changement visuel.<\/p><p>C\u2019est un film dont on sort plus sonn\u00e9 qu\u2019\u00e9mu car malgr\u00e9 son point de vue interne, les personnages sont finalement peu attachants \u2013 peut-\u00eatre parce qu\u2019ils ont tous une part d\u2019ombre ou d\u2019horreur en eux \u2013 et c\u2019est donc un film assez \u00e9nigmatique (notamment avec une fin (pr\u00e9-\u00e9pilogue) qui aurait peut-\u00eatre m\u00e9rit\u00e9 une conclusion plus claire) et surtout froid, voire brut, ou brutaliste somme toute. Le titre est ainsi refl\u00e9t\u00e9 par toute la nature de l\u2019\u0153uvre, de sa th\u00e9matique architecturale \u00e0 son esth\u00e9tique visuelle, en passant par ses personnages ou encore sa partition imposante comme un \u00e9difice brutaliste. \u2018The Brutalist\u2019 renvoie ainsi non seulement au mouvement artistique dont le protagoniste est issu, mais aussi \u00e0 une mani\u00e8re de se comporter, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat m\u00eame du pays d\u00e9crit. This is the arrival of an immigrant as an ascent into the light, leading up to his triumphant sighting of the Statue of Liberty in an unstable framing and, above all, where the torch of a statue carrying the American Dream at the tip of its upraised arm is &#8230; upside down!<\/p><p>\u201cThe Brutalist\u201d stands out first and foremost as an anomaly in today&rsquo;s cinematic landscape, not only for its narrative and aesthetic scope, but also for its structure. It&rsquo;s an auteur film in two major parts (Overture &amp; Chapter 1 \/ Chapter 2 &amp; Epilogue) divided by an intermission in the middle, spanning no less than three decades on the harrowing fate of a Hungarian immigrant who came to experience the American Dream in 1947. This character is a visionary architect with an unspeakable past who finds himself in a booming Pennsylvania while his wife is still back in Europe. He ends up in coal and dirt, until he has an (intellectually stimulating) encounter with a wealthy American patron who recognizes his value and commissions him to design a building that reflects the film itself, i.e. out of the ordinary and multi-purpose, just like this three-hours-and-a-half film full of themes and metaphors.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Brutalist\u201d is thus a historical and personal epic, both macro and micro, about architecture of course, but this is not the only theme of the film, which is much richer and also examines this nation of immigration (with the cousin as a perfect example of assimilation), as well as the discord between art and industry, or the trauma of an artist and that of a couple. It&rsquo;s a film that tells both the story of a man, a country and a century, through a portrait of American delusion and artistic will. It&rsquo;s a film that&rsquo;s dense but accessible, long but not lengthy, and well worth reflecting on.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18481 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Snapshot_3233.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Snapshot_3233.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Snapshot_3233-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Snapshot_3233-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Snapshot_3233-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Indeed, Brady Corbet is no stranger to stories that bring themes together to form a whole, having directed \u201cVox Lux\u201d in 2018, which already examined a kind of sick America both through its high-school killings and its pop stars. Here, he explores the major influence that the psychological condition of an era, the post-war period, may have had on an architectural movement by inventing a Bauhaus-educated character, partly inspired by Marcel Breuer, whose cold, overwhelming architecture hides horror in the beauty of its geometry &#8230; or how a man obsessively seeks to rebuild himself in architecture to the point of projecting or losing part of his soul in it. Adrien Brody (The Pianist) is almost in every shot to embody this symbolic protagonist, alongside the excellent Guy Pearce (Memento) and Felicity Jones (Rogue One), with dialogue in English, Hungarian and Italian that carefully reflects the characters&rsquo; different accents and vocabularies.<\/p><p>Brady Corbet, who was awarded a Venice Film Prize for his direction, brings a very particular style to the screen, starting with his use of film and <em>VistaVision<\/em> (a horizontal film-running process that avoids distortion), which gives the film a photo-like format. Shot almost entirely in Budapest on spectacular sets, the tone is somber, with dark shots, dull and desaturated colors, and the ever-present score beating out the cadence and resonating long after the screening. With almost no shot\/reverse shots, but rather plenty of uncut shots including dialogue scenes, Corbet delivers some truly memorable scenes, ending with a secret key to his work. And like the protagonist&rsquo;s journey, the cinematography gradually evolves from grime to light, ending with an epilogue that brings a real visual change.<\/p><p>It&rsquo;s a film that leaves us more stunned than moved, because despite its internal point of view, the characters are ultimately not very endearing \u2013 perhaps because they all have some degree of darkness or horror in them \u2013 and it&rsquo;s therefore a rather enigmatic film (especially with an ending (pre-epilogue) that perhaps deserved a clearer closure) and above all cold, even raw, or brutalist after all. The title is thus reflected in the entire fabric of the film, from its architectural theme to its visual style, as well as its characters and its score, as imposing as a Brutalist piece. \u2018The Brutalist&rsquo; then refers not only to the artistic movement from which the protagonist comes, but also to a way of behavior, as well as to the very state of the country depicted. And beyond all this symbolism, the film itself is also a metaphor for cinema and the director&rsquo;s project, comparable to the architect&rsquo;s: a building and a film can indeed require just as
