il y a Chris, le p\u00e8re, qui malgr\u00e9 ses efforts monstrueux pour maintenir un semblant de coh\u00e9sion au sein de son foyer, sombre dans la d\u00e9pression ; et il y a Chloe, adolescente solitaire, fragile et traumatis\u00e9e par la mort r\u00e9cente de sa meilleure amie. Et leur installation dans cette nouvelle demeure ne va pas am\u00e9liorer leur situation. C\u2019est du moins ce que constate, impuissante, une pr\u00e9sence fantomatique et silencieuse qui habite les lieux\u2026<\/p><p>Si ce synopsis vous para\u00eet bien plus dramatique qu\u2019horrifique, c\u2019est parce que \u00ab Presence \u00bb est en effet bien plus un drame familial qu\u2019un film d\u2019horreur effrayant. De fait, la pr\u00e9sence ne se manifeste \u00e0 la famille Payne le plus souvent que par quelques rares souffles ou mouvements d\u2019objets ; elle est \u00e0 peine perceptible. Seule Chloe est d\u2019ailleurs capable de la sentir, ce qui lui vaut de nombreuses querelles avec son fr\u00e8re et sa m\u00e8re qui ne la croient pas \u2013 contrairement \u00e0 son p\u00e8re qui, lui, essaye de la soutenir.<\/p><p>Mais quelle est cette pr\u00e9sence ? N\u2019y en a-t-il qu\u2019une, d\u2019ailleurs ? Si les conversations entre les personnages et leurs r\u00e9actions (en particulier celles de Chloe) sugg\u00e8rent une piste, la question n\u2019est jamais r\u00e9ellement r\u00e9solue. Aussi parce que le r\u00e9alisateur Steven Soderbergh (\u00ab Ocean\u2019s Eleven \u00bb, \u00ab Solaris \u00bb, \u00ab Contagion \u00bb, \u00ab Parano\u00efa \u00bb) et son sc\u00e9nariste David Koepp (qui a notamment \u00e9crit \u00ab Jurassic Park \u00bb) ont pris le pari de tourner ce film uniquement sous le point de vue de cette pr\u00e9sence. Le long-m\u00e9trage est ainsi une succession de plans-s\u00e9quences et de quelques plans fixes, ou bien conversationnels ou bien silencieux, (rappelant les \u00ab Paranormal Activities \u00bb) et qui ne reprennent que ce que voit la pr\u00e9sence. \u00ab Presence \u00bb est de surcro\u00eet un huis-clos cantonn\u00e9 \u00e0 cette grande maison investie par des \u00eatres tourment\u00e9s et cette timide \u00ab \u00e2me \u00bb dont on ne sait pas grand-chose hormis qu\u2019elle observe une famille se d\u00e9liter.<\/p><p>Car la pr\u00e9sence, bien qu\u2019invisible et inaudible la plupart du temps, n\u2019est pas qu\u2019un simple t\u00e9moin passif des drames qui se jouent chez les Payne et notamment autour de Chloe : le spectre, qui r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement se cache dans le placard de Chloe, essaye peu \u00e0 peu d\u2019intervenir, comme s\u2019il se prenait d\u2019affection pour cette famille, comme s\u2019il avait pour mission de la prot\u00e9ger \u2013 et plus sp\u00e9cifiquement de prot\u00e9ger Chloe. Traversant avec nous le quatri\u00e8me mur, la pr\u00e9sence est ainsi un membre du public (qui voit \u00e0 travers ses \u00ab yeux \u00bb) et un personnage \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re.<\/p><p>Malgr\u00e9 peut-\u00eatre une clef de thriller un peu simpliste et exp\u00e9ditive lorsqu\u2019elle est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e, la fin, brusque, est d\u2019autant plus saisissante qu\u2019elle cl\u00f4t des tranches de vie partielles (parce que pertinemment elliptiques : l\u2019on ne sait pas vraiment sur combien de temps s\u2019\u00e9tale l\u2019histoire et si la pr\u00e9sence est consciente ou non du passage du temps), mais suffisantes pour rendre tous les protagonistes et antagonistes attachants et profonds. La conclusion est ainsi terriblement dramatique, aussi parce qu\u2019elle est abrupte, laissant en suspens de nombreuses interrogations et ouvrant \u00e0 l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation plusieurs symboliques autant familiales que spirituelles. \u00ab Presence \u00bb ne plaira par cons\u00e9quent pas \u00e0 tout le monde, mais reste pour notre part un film qui excelle de par son cadre restreint qui justement offre une panoplie de messages et de r\u00e9flexions sur la vie comme sur la mort.<\/p><p>Axel Chevalier<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42480e6 elementor-widget__width-initial exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42480e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Within the walls of a wealthy house lives a family that is slowly breaking down: there&rsquo;s Rebecca, the mother, consumed by her work, who sees only her son Tyler, a top university athlete and quite pretentious; there&rsquo;s Chris, the father, who despite his monstrous efforts to keep things together at home, sinks into depression; and there&rsquo;s Chloe, a lonely, fragile teenager traumatized by the recent death of her best friend. And their move into this new home isn&rsquo;t going to improve their situation. At least, that&rsquo;s what a ghostly, silent presence living in the house seems to realize&#8230;<\/p><p>If this description sounds more dramatic than horrific, that&rsquo;s because \u201cPresence\u201d is much more a family drama than a scary horror film. In fact, the Payne family&rsquo;s presence is most often manifested by a few rare breaths or movements of objects; it&rsquo;s barely noticeable. Chloe is in fact the only one capable of perceiving it, which leads to frequent quarrels with her brother and mother, who don&rsquo;t believe her &#8211; unlike her father, who tries to support her.<\/p><p>But what is this presence? Is there only one, after all? While the conversations between the characters and their reactions (especially Chloe&rsquo;s) suggest a clue, the question is never really resolved. This is also because director Steven Soderbergh (\u201cOcean&rsquo;s Eleven\u201d, \u201cSolaris\u201d, \u201cContagion\u201d, \u201cParanoia\u201d) and his screenwriter David Koepp (whose credits include \u201cJurassic Park\u201d) took the gamble of shooting this film solely from the point of view of this presence. The film is thus a succession of long uncut shots and a few still shots, either conversational or silent (reminiscent of \u201cParanormal Activities\u201d), which only show what the presence sees. What&rsquo;s more, \u201cPresence\u201d is a closed-door setting, confined to a large house inhabited by tormented beings and a timid \u201csoul\u201d who we know little about, except that she&rsquo;s watching a family fall apart.<\/p><p>Indeed, the presence, though invisible and inaudible most of the time, is not simply a passive witness to the dramas unfolding in the Payne household and around Chloe in particular. The specter, who regularly hides in Chloe&rsquo;s closet, gradually tries to intervene, as if it were growing fond of this family, as if its mission were to protect it \u2013 and more specifically, to protect Chloe. Crossing the fourth wall with us, the presence is therefore both a member of the audience (seeing through its \u201ceyes\u201d) and a character in its own right.<\/p><p>Despite perhaps a rather simple and rushed thriller twist when it is revealed, the sudden ending is all the more gripping as it brings to a close partial pieces of life (because they are so elliptical: we don&rsquo;t really know how long the story spans, and whether or not the presence is aware of the passage of time), but sufficient enough to make all the protagonists and antagonists endearing and meaningful. The conclusion is thus terribly dramatic, also because it is abrupt, leaving many questions unanswered and opening up to interpretation a number of symbols, both familial and spiritual. \u201cPresence\u201d therefore won&rsquo;t appeal to everyone, but remains for us a film that shines in its restricted setting, which offers a wealth of messages and reflections on life and death.<\/p><p>Axel
