Alors en plein (premier) confinement d\u00fb \u00e0 la pand\u00e9mie de Covid-19, la vie de Malek et de tout son quartier embl\u00e9matique et anim\u00e9 semble suspendue tout en continuant. Malek, r\u00e9cemment install\u00e9 ici, vit seul et travaille dans l\u2019informatique. Il est assez solitaire et ne conna\u00eet pas grand monde. Puis d\u00e9barque d\u2019Alg\u00e9rie Riyad, son neveu, un peu \u00e0 l\u2019improviste, et tous les deux vont, en plus de r\u00e9apprendre \u00e0 se conna\u00eetre, apprendre \u00e0 conna\u00eetre Barb\u00e8s et sa communaut\u00e9.<\/p><p>Tout premier film de Hassan Guerrar \u2013 lui qui au d\u00e9part est un attach\u00e9 de presse dans le cin\u00e9ma depuis plus de trente ans \u2013, \u00ab Barb\u00e8s, little Alg\u00e9rie \u00bb est un long-m\u00e9trage intime, souvent autobiographique, port\u00e9 par des personnages travaill\u00e9s car inspir\u00e9s de personnes r\u00e9elles. Malek, c\u2019est un bon morceau de Hassan ; interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Sofiane Zermani \u2013 rappeur et com\u00e9dien qui jusqu\u2019ici avait tenu des r\u00f4les plus muscl\u00e9s \u2013, le h\u00e9ros du film, Alg\u00e9rien de naissance mais Fran\u00e7ais d\u2019adoption, renoue avec ses origines gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la (re)cr\u00e9ation de liens communautaires et familiaux \u00e0 Barb\u00e8s \u2013 l\u00e0 o\u00f9 vit le r\u00e9alisateur. Assez \u00e9vasif quant \u00e0 ses brouilles avec ses fr\u00e8res et sa m\u00e8re rest\u00e9s en Alg\u00e9rie, Malek interroge et r\u00e9apprivoise sa double identit\u00e9 franco-alg\u00e9rienne \u00e0 travers ses retrouvailles avec Riyad (jou\u00e9 par Khalil Ben Gherbia) \u2013 ce dernier qui lui d\u00e9couvre Paris et les r\u00e9alit\u00e9s fran\u00e7aises.<\/p><p>Outre un (auto)portrait puissant de par la pr\u00e9sence \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran de Sofiane Zermani, \u00ab Barb\u00e8s, little Alg\u00e9rie \u00bb dessine une chronique de la vie du XVIII\u00e8me dans un quartier (mal) connu de la capitale. L\u2019on y d\u00e9couvre avec joie les dynamiques propres et color\u00e9es de la communaut\u00e9 franco-alg\u00e9rienne, qu\u2019elles soient heureuses (les commer\u00e7ants et b\u00e9n\u00e9voles qui restent solidaires) ou inqui\u00e9tantes (les bagarres et trafics en tous genres), le tout dans un contexte particulier voire saugrenu pour Barb\u00e8s : le confinement. Avec une lumi\u00e8re presque incandescente, les images nous rappellent par ailleurs la m\u00e9t\u00e9o exceptionnelle de cette dr\u00f4le de p\u00e9riode, surtout dans ce dr\u00f4le d\u2019endroit.<\/p><p>Dr\u00f4le, le film l\u2019est aussi, du fait de situations et surtout de personnages comiques et attachants, tels que l\u2019iconique Pr\u00e9fecture (Khaled Bena\u00efssa), la bienveillante Hadria (Adila Bendimerad) et la douce Eya (Eye Ha\u00efdara). Dramatique, le film le demeure en filigrane \u2013 il l\u2019est notamment lors du dernier quart. Parce que, d\u2019une part, \u00ab Barb\u00e8s, little Alg\u00e9rie \u00bb raconte les d\u00e9chirements familiaux et identitaires de Malek \u2013 dont on comprend qu\u2019il en veut \u00e0 sa m\u00e8re (et peut-\u00eatre \u00e0 tous ses proches d\u2019Alg\u00e9rie) de l\u2019avoir rejet\u00e9 toute sa vie. Et parce que, d\u2019autre part, le film d\u00e9crit la mis\u00e8re de nombre d\u2019habitants de Barb\u00e8s, contraints de se rendre \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9glise Saint-Bernard pour b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier de paniers-repas \u2013 Hassan Guerrar lui-m\u00eame est b\u00e9n\u00e9vole dans une association qu\u2019il a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de filmer et de mettre en avant, et certains com\u00e9diens ont m\u00eame fini par devenir eux aussi b\u00e9n\u00e9voles dans la vraie vie.<\/p><p>En somme, \u00ab Barb\u00e8s, little Alg\u00e9rie \u00bb est un premier film r\u00e9ussi car complet : \u00e0 la fois personnel, immersif et \u00e9mouvant, jouant avec les tons comme avec la fine fronti\u00e8re entre fiction et r\u00e9alit\u00e9, entre documentaire et tranche de vie. In the midst of (the first) lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, life for Malek and his entire iconic, bustling neighborhood seems suspended, yet still going on. Malek, who recently moved here, lives alone and works in IT. He&rsquo;s quite a loner and doesn&rsquo;t know many people. Then Riyad, his nephew, arrives unexpectedly from Algeria, and the two of them, in addition to getting to know each other again, get to know Barb\u00e8s and its community.<\/p><p>The very first film by Hassan Guerrar \u2013 who started out as a press agent in the film industry over thirty years ago \u2013 \u201cBarb\u00e8s, little Alg\u00e9rie\u201d is an intimate, often autobiographical feature film, featuring characters who are well-crafted because they are inspired by real people. Malek, played by Sofiane Zermani (a rapper and actor who until now had taken on more muscular roles), the film&rsquo;s hero, is Algerian by birth but French by adoption, and reconnects with his origins thanks to the (re)creation of community and family ties in Barb\u00e8s \u2013 where the director lives. Rather evasive about his quarrels with his brothers and mother who remained in Algeria, Malek questions and reacquaints himself with his dual French-Algerian identity through his reunion with Riyad (played by Khalil Ben Gherbia) \u2013 the latter discovering Paris and French realities for himself.<\/p><p>In addition to a powerful (self-)portrait thanks to Sofiane Zermani&rsquo;s screen presence, \u201cBarb\u00e8s, little Alg\u00e9rie\u201d chronicles life in the 18th district of Paris. The film explores the colorful dynamics of the Franco-Algerian community, from the happy (solidarity between shopkeepers and volunteers) to the disturbing (brawls and trafficking of all kinds), all in a context that is peculiar and even bizarre for Barb\u00e8s: lockdown. With an almost incandescent light, the images also remind us of the exceptional weather of this strange period, especially in this strange place.<\/p><p>The film is also funny, thanks to the situations and, above all, the comic, endearing characters, such as the iconic Najib aka Pr\u00e9fecture (Khaled Bena\u00efssa), the benevolent Hadria (Adila Bendimerad) and the sweet Eya (Eye Ha\u00efdara). Dramatic as it is, the film remains so in the background \u2013 especially in the last quarter. This is because, on the one hand, \u201cBarb\u00e8s, little Alg\u00e9rie\u201d tells the story of Malek&rsquo;s family upheaval and identity crisis \u2013 and we understand that he resents his mother (and perhaps all his Algerian relatives) for having rejected him all his life. And because, on the other hand, the film describes the misery of many Barb\u00e8s residents, forced to go to the Saint-Bernard church to receive packed lunches \u2013 Hassan Guerrar himself is a volunteer in an association he decided to film and highlight, and some of the actors have even ended up becoming volunteers in real life too.<\/p><p>All in all, \u201cBarb\u00e8s, little Alg\u00e9rie\u201d is a film debut that succeeds because it&rsquo;s all-encompassing: personal, immersive and moving, playing with tone and the fine line between fiction and reality, documentary and piece of life. A little gem dedicated to binational people and others alike, it reminds us that humanity, on both an individual and collective scale, although often sadly divided, can be built on enlightened bonds.<\/p><p>Axel
