Le 5 septembre 1972, le groupe de <em>fedeyin<\/em> Palestiniens prend en otage une partie de la d\u00e9l\u00e9gation isra\u00e9lienne lors des Jeux Olympiques de Munich, et donc qui plus est, en Allemagne de l\u2019Ouest \u2026 Steven Spielberg \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 revenu sur cette trag\u00e9die dans son film \u00ab\u00a0Munich\u00a0\u00bb (2005) consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 la traque des terroristes, et Kevin Macdonald avait quant \u00e0 lui mis en lumi\u00e8re le fiasco de la police ouest-allemande lors de ces attentats dans son documentaire \u00ab\u00a0Un jour en septembre\u00a0\u00bb (1999). Ici l\u2019objectif est tout autre\u00a0: revivre cette prise d\u2019otages par le prisme du journalisme et en direct en nous plongeant dans le studio de la cha\u00eene de t\u00e9l\u00e9vision am\u00e9ricaine <em>ABC<\/em> charg\u00e9e de diffuser les \u00e9preuves sportives et qui s\u2019improvisa donc sans la moindre exp\u00e9rience, cha\u00eene d\u2019info en continu avant l\u2019heure\u00a0!<\/p><p>Le r\u00e9alisateur suisse Tim Fehlbaum d\u00e9passe ici la simple reconstitution historique\u00a0: il d\u00e9place aussi le regard. Non seulement le film b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie ainsi d\u2019un grand r\u00e9alisme gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un gros travail historique (sur les mat\u00e9riels, les infos, et la pr\u00e9cision du timing) en int\u00e9grant de nombreuses images d\u2019archives, comme les interventions du pr\u00e9sentateur Jim McKay \u00e0 l\u2019antenne ou les rares images captur\u00e9es de la prise d\u2019otage. Mais il laisse aussi les horreurs au c\u0153ur du sujet compl\u00e8tement hors-champ en nous pla\u00e7ant et nous maintenant durant toute la dur\u00e9e de la prise d\u2019otage dans la salle de r\u00e9gie des studios de la cha\u00eene <em>ABC<\/em>. Le spectateur est alors plac\u00e9 dans les m\u00eames conditions que ces journalistes et techniciens d\u00e9pass\u00e9s par les \u00e9v\u00e9nements multipliant les coups de fil pour identifier les otages, n\u00e9gocier avec leur hi\u00e9rarchie, et tout simplement essayer de comprendre ce qu\u2019il se passe \u2026 et donc nous permettre en direct \u00e0 nous aussi de prendre la mesure des \u00e9v\u00e9nements ! Et cette mise en condition en huis-clos dans un faux temps-r\u00e9el cr\u00e9e un film d\u2019une rare intensit\u00e9 renforc\u00e9e par la courte dur\u00e9e du film, son rythme haletant, son montage serr\u00e9 et sa mise en sc\u00e8ne fluide entre cam\u00e9ras \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9paule et panoramiques fil\u00e9s. Et \u00ab\u00a05 Septembre\u00a0\u00bb sera \u00e9videmment encore plus fort pour celles et ceux ne connaissant pas les faits, puisque le suspense journalistique devient alors aussi historique et humain. C\u2019est donc un film qui vous happe par sa tension constante aupr\u00e8s d\u2019un groupe de journalistes remarquablement interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s par un casting plut\u00f4t de cin\u00e9ma ind\u00e9pendant et international avec notamment John Magaro (Past Lives), Peter Sarsgaard (Memory) et Leonie Benesch (La Salle des Profs).<\/p><p>Mais c\u2019est aussi un film qui pousse ses personnages journalistes (et donc de par sa mise en condition, \u00e9galement le spectateur) \u00e0 interroger son rapport aux images, les dangers du direct et les limites de l\u2019information. Au fond, c\u2019est un film historique sur le moment o\u00f9 la fronti\u00e8re entre le devoir d\u2019informer et le d\u00e9sir de sensationnel se brouillait pour toujours. On September 5, 1972, a group of Palestinian <em>fedeyin<\/em> held the Israeli delegation hostage during the Munich Olympic Games, precisely in West Germany &#8230; Steven Spielberg had already revisited this tragedy in his film \u201cMunich\u201d (2005), dedicated to the hunt for the terrorists, and Kevin Macdonald had brought to light the fiasco of the West German police during these attacks in his documentary \u201cOne Day in September\u201d (1999). Here, the goal is quite different: to experience the hostage situation through the lens of journalism, and live from the studio of the American television channel <em>ABC<\/em>, which was in charge of broadcasting the sporting events and thus improvised itself, with no experience whatsoever, as a 24-hour news channel ahead of its time!<\/p><p>In this film, Swiss director Tim Fehlbaum goes beyond mere historical reenactment: he also shifts the focus. Not only does the film benefit from a high degree of realism, thanks to a great deal of historical detail (on equipment, news and precise timing) and the inclusion of plenty of archival footage, such as on-air appearances by presenter Jim McKay or the rare images captured during the hostage-taking. But it also leaves the horrors at the heart of the story completely out of the picture, putting us and keeping us in the control room of the <em>ABC<\/em> studios for the entire duration of the crisis. The viewer is then thrown into the same conditions as these journalists and technicians, overwhelmed by the situation, as they make more and more phone calls to identify the hostages, negotiate with their superiors, and simply try to understand what&rsquo;s going on &#8230; and thereby enable us, too, to assess what&rsquo;s going on live! The film&rsquo;s short running time, breathless pace, tight editing and fluid direction with hand-held cameras and whip pan shots all combine to create a film of rare intensity. And \u201cSeptember 5\u201d will obviously be even more powerful for those who don&rsquo;t know the facts, since the journalistic suspense then also becomes historical and human. It&rsquo;s therefore a film that grabs you with its constant tension with a group of journalists, remarkably played by a mostly independent and international cast including John Magaro (Past Lives), Peter Sarsgaard (Memory) and Leonie Benesch (The Teachers\u2019 Lounge).<\/p><p>But it&rsquo;s also a film that challenges its journalist characters (and therefore, through its approach, also the viewer) to question their relationship with the images, the dangers of live coverage and the limits of news reporting. Basically, it&rsquo;s a historical film about the moment when the line between the duty to report and the desire for sensationalism blurred forever. And in an era today when the news seems to be driven and dictated by the 24-hour press cycle, we might have hoped to take these professional issues and moral dilemmas a little further, but it&rsquo;s
