Le r\u00e9alisateur chilien du po\u00e9tique \u00ab\u00a0Neruda\u00a0\u00bb et du m\u00e9taphorique \u00ab\u00a0El Conde\u00a0\u00bb, aborde ici une artiste tortur\u00e9e et m\u00e9lancolique alors que La Callas se battait pour retrouver sa voix. La l\u00e9gendaire cantatrice grecque ne s\u2019est en effet pas produite sur sc\u00e8ne depuis plus de dix ans et vit alors recluse en 1977 dans son luxueux appartement parisien\u2026<\/p><p>Fid\u00e8le au cadre de sa trilogie, Pablo Larra\u00edn circonscrit l\u2019intrigue \u00e0 un temps court en limitant le r\u00e9cit aux sept derniers jours de Maria Callas, aussi bien l\u2019artiste que la femme. Le sc\u00e9nario de Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) nous embarque ainsi dans un voyage vers la mort o\u00f9 la cantatrice offre un ultime entretien \u00e0 un journaliste nomm\u00e9 Mandrax \u2013 qui n\u2019est autre que le nom de son m\u00e9dicament \u2013 qui (litt\u00e9ralement) l\u2019accompagne quotidiennement lors de ses d\u00e9ambulations parisiennes. Mais cette all\u00e9gorie journalistique se r\u00e9v\u00e8le \u00eatre aussi celle du r\u00e9alisateur lui-m\u00eame comme une sorte de mise en ab\u00eeme sur la construction de son propre film. Si le point de vue reste introspectif (comme dans \u00ab Jackie \u00bb et \u00ab Spencer \u00bb), il navigue entre r\u00eave, souvenirs et r\u00e9alit\u00e9 tant La Callas peut \u00eatre d\u2019une lucidit\u00e9 tranchante ou fantasmer sous l\u2019influence de son interviewer. Et dans cet univers de luxe mortif\u00e8re, la Diva se souvient et raconte son pass\u00e9, son enfance et son grand amour pour l\u2019armateur grec Aristote Onassis (qui la quitta finalement pour \u00e9pouser \u2026 Jackie Kennedy) mais pas sous la forme de flash-backs, plut\u00f4t comme des \u00e9clats de souvenirs d\u2019une vie ant\u00e9rieure d\u2019ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 achev\u00e9e. Angelina Jolie y incarne cette cantatrice aphone avec force dans la douleur et la tourmente aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des deux grands acteurs italiens Pierfrancesco Favino &amp; Alba Rohrwacher et du Fran\u00e7ais Vincent Macaigne.<\/p><p>La photographie d\u2019Ed Lachman (succ\u00e9dant \u00e0 St\u00e9phane Fontaine et Claire Mathon sur \u00ab Jackie \u00bb et \u00ab Spencer \u00bb) est une nouvelle fois sublime et le cadre toujours aussi riche dans cette trilogie de figures f\u00e9minines vivant dans le faste et l\u2019ornement mais bien seules dans leur sph\u00e8re, \u00e0 l\u2019image d\u2019un des premiers plans du film marqu\u00e9 par la sym\u00e9trie parfaite de son d\u00e9cor dans l\u2019entr\u00e9e d\u2019une chambre luxuriante o\u00f9 le seul \u00e9l\u00e9ment dissym\u00e9trique n\u2019est autre que Maria Callas dormant sur un c\u00f4t\u00e9 de son immense lit. Le spectacle et la grandeur de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra se retrouvent alors dans les somptueux d\u00e9cors et les costumes ainsi que dans la th\u00e9\u00e2tralit\u00e9 assum\u00e9e du film qui cr\u00e9e une certaine forme d\u2019artificialit\u00e9 et donc plus de distance avec son sujet que dans les deux opus pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents. Mais c\u2019est coh\u00e9rent avec ce r\u00e9cit aux fronti\u00e8res poreuses entre r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et r\u00eaverie qui met en sc\u00e8ne l\u2019Op\u00e9ra dans l\u2019imaginaire de son sujet comme avec \u2018Le Chant des Gitans\u2019 au Trocad\u00e9ro ou le \u2018Ch\u0153ur \u00e0 bouche ferm\u00e9e\u2019 par des geishas en plein Paris. Le film juxtapose ainsi l\u2019image de La Callas et l\u2019intimit\u00e9 de Maria dans les m\u00eames sc\u00e8nes d\u00e8s l\u2019introduction avec ce concert chant\u00e9\/rem\u00e9mor\u00e9 dans la cuisine sur fond de beurre gr\u00e9sillant \u00e0 la po\u00eale. The Chilean director of the poetic \u201cNeruda\u201d and the metaphorical \u201cEl Conde\u201d, here tackles a tormented, melancholy artist as La Callas struggled to regain her voice. In 1977, the legendary Greek singer had not appeared on stage for over ten years, living in seclusion in her luxurious Parisian apartment&#8230;<\/p><p>In line with the setting of his trilogy, Pablo Larra\u00edn keeps the timeframe short, limiting the story to the last seven days of Maria Callas, both the artist and the woman. The screenplay by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) takes us on a journey towards death, in which the singer offers a final interview to a journalist named Mandrax &#8211; the name of her medication &#8211; who (literally) walks with her through her daily Parisian wanderings. But this journalistic allegory also turns out to be that of the director himself, as a kind of mise en abyme on the making of his own film. While the point of view remains introspective (as in \u201cJackie\u201d and \u201cSpencer\u201d), it shifts back and forth between dreams, memories and reality, as La Callas can be either razor-sharply lucid or fantasizing under the influence of her interviewer. And in this world of mortifying opulence, the Diva remembers and recounts her past, her childhood and her great love for the Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis (who eventually left her to marry &#8230; none other than Jackie Kennedy), but not as flashbacks, rather as bursts of memory from a past life already over. Angelina Jolie powerfully portrays this voiceless singer in pain and turmoil, alongside two great Italian actors, Pierfrancesco Favino &amp; Alba Rohrwacher, and Frenchman Vincent Macaigne.<\/p><p>Ed Lachman&rsquo;s cinematography (following in the footsteps of St\u00e9phane Fontaine and Claire Mathon on \u201cJackie\u201d and \u201cSpencer\u201d) is once again stunning, and the frame is as rich as ever in this trilogy of female figures living in pomp and ornament, but very much alone in their own world, as illustrated by one of the very first shots of the film, characterized by the perfect symmetry of its set in the entrance to a lavish bedroom, where the only asymmetrical feature is none other than Maria Callas sleeping on one side of her huge bed. The spectacle and grandeur of the opera are then conveyed in the magnificent sets and costumes, as well as in the film&rsquo;s overt theatricality, which creates a certain form of artificiality and therefore more distance from its subject than in the two previous installments. But this is consistent with the story&rsquo;s loose borders between reality and reverie, which stages the opera in its subject&rsquo;s imagination, as with &lsquo;Le Chant des Gitans&rsquo; at the Trocadero or the &lsquo;Ch\u0153ur \u00e0 bouche ferm\u00e9e&rsquo; featuring geishas in the middle of Paris. The film thus juxtaposes the image of La Callas and the intimacy of Maria in the same scenes right from the opening, with the concert sung\/remembered in the kitchen over a background of sizzling butter in the frying pan. The past is depicted in black-and-white or with fake archive footage, while the reality is fantasized in splendid colors and nostalgic autumnal hues, filmed with various vintage cameras on 35mm (for the story) and 16mm (for the memories).<\/p><p>Although \u201cMaria\u201d verges on the style exercise, somewhat reminiscent of Andrew Dominik&rsquo;s beautiful \u201cBlonde\u201d about Marilyn Monroe (whom we meet in an almost kinship-like scene), Pablo Larra\u00edn concludes his female biography trilogy brilliantly with this visually gorgeous film full of great directorial vision that goes far
