Pour sa premi\u00e8re r\u00e9alisation, elle signe un film passionnant qui cherche plus \u00e0 comprendre son personnage plut\u00f4t qu\u2019\u00e0 raconter sa vie. \u00ab Emily \u00bb porte moins sur les \u00e9crits d\u2019Emily Bront\u00eb qu\u2019il ne s\u2019en nourrit en imaginant sa vie et son parcours en vue d\u2019explorer les sources de son \u00e9criture.<\/p><p>L\u2019actrice australienne bouscule le film de costumes avec un biopic qui fr\u00f4le \u00e0 la fois l\u2019incarnation \u00e0 la \u00ab Tesla \u00bb et la fiction \u00e0 la \u00ab Eiffel \u00bb. Dans la mesure o\u00f9 l\u2019on en sait si peu sur sa vie, la d\u00e9sormais sc\u00e9nariste et r\u00e9alisatrice fait le choix d\u2019utiliser le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre roman \u00ab Les Hauts de Hurlevent \u00bb comme porte d\u2019entr\u00e9e dans la vie de son auteure, son imagination et son caract\u00e8re. Emily Bront\u00eb est alors rendue \u00e0 sa v\u00e9rit\u00e9 (imagin\u00e9e) et \u00e0 son imagination dans un biopic qui parvient \u00e0 donner une impression de r\u00e9alit\u00e9 tout en prenant plusieurs libert\u00e9s artistiques. O\u2019Connor lui pr\u00eate ainsi une passion avec un vrai vicaire mais qui fut hypoth\u00e9tiquement son amant, ainsi qu\u2019une rivalit\u00e9 avec ses s\u0153urs, la montre ch\u00e9rissant son roman imprim\u00e9 alors que les s\u0153urs Bront\u00eb publiaient sous pseudonymes ou encore induit une certaine influence d\u2019Emily sur Charlotte dans son \u00e9lan r\u00e9dactionnel alors que \u00ab Jane Eyre \u00bb fut publi\u00e9 la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e que \u00ab Les Hauts de Hurlevent \u00bb. Mais qu\u2019importe, l\u00e0 n\u2019est pas l\u2019objet du film, le message en revanche est clair : elle en fait la plus audacieuse, la plus visionnaire et la plus lucide du trio de s\u0153urs. En m\u00ealant r\u00e9alit\u00e9 biographique et \u00e9l\u00e9ments litt\u00e9raires, ce biopic en fait ainsi une femme vivante plut\u00f4t qu\u2019une figure historique fig\u00e9e.<\/p><p>C\u2019est un film moderne dans le sens o\u00f9 il met en sc\u00e8ne des comportements de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 ce que le spectateur les traduise avec son vocabulaire d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui, mais aussi dans sa mise en sc\u00e8ne dynamique avec une cam\u00e9ra port\u00e9e ne reculant pas devant les mouvements et les gros plans, un montage rythm\u00e9 et un impressionnant travail de mixage son. Elle s\u2019aventure presque dans le fantomatique dans une sc\u00e8ne o\u00f9 la fronti\u00e8re entre jeu et emprise se brouille o\u00f9 le masque n\u2019est alors plus la continuit\u00e9 du jeu social de l\u2019\u00e9poque mais devient une force narrative.<\/p><p>Emma Mackey porte le film avec son interpr\u00e9tation sensible et intense d\u2019Emily Bront\u00eb lui donnant une d\u00e9termination et un sentiment d\u2019affranchissement contemporain aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d\u2019Oliver Jackson-Cohen (le vicaire) et de Fionn Whitehead (son fr\u00e8re source d\u2019inspiration). L\u2019actrice franco-anglaise de \u00ab Sex Education \u00bb ajoute une r\u00e9elle plus-value \u00e0 un sc\u00e9nario o\u00f9 le passage et la progression dans la langue de l\u2019amour sont bien visibles et repr\u00e9sentent cette d\u00e9termination \u00e0 s\u2019exprimer et exposer son point de vue m\u00eame avec un vocabulaire limit\u00e9. For her first directorial venture, she delivers a thrilling film that seeks more to understand her character than to tell her life story. \u201cEmily\u201d is less about Emily Bront\u00eb&rsquo;s writings than it is inspired by them, imagining her life and her journey to explore the sources of her writing.<\/p><p>The Australian actress subverts the period drama with a biopic that verges on both \u201cTesla\u201d-like personification and \u201cLawrence of Arabia\u201d-like fiction. Since so little is known about her life, the newly turned writer-director chooses to use the famous novel \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d as a gateway to her author&rsquo;s life, imagination and character. Emily Bront\u00eb is then restored to her (imagined) truth and imagination in a biopic that manages to give an impression of reality while taking several creative liberties. O&rsquo;Connor thus gives her a love affair with a real curate who was hypothetically her lover, as well as a rivalry with her sisters, shows her cherishing her printed novel though the Bront\u00eb sisters published under pseudonyms, or even implies a certain influence of Emily on Charlotte in her creative impulse, even though \u201cJane Eyre\u201d was published the year of \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d. But that is simply not the point of the film, the message however is clear: she makes her the most daring, the most visionary and the most clear-sighted of the three sisters. By mixing biographical reality and elements of literature, this biopic makes her a lively woman rather than a frozen historical figure.<\/p><p>This is a modern film insofar as it stages behaviors in such a way that the viewer can translate them with today&rsquo;s vocabulary, but also in its kinetic execution with a handheld camera that uses motion and close-ups, a dynamic editing and an impressive sound design. It almost ventures into the ghostly in a scene where the border between role-playing and possession is blurred and the mask is no longer the continuity of the social game of the time but becomes a storytelling thrust.<\/p><p>Emma Mackey brings the film to life with her sensitive and intense interpretation of Emily Bront\u00eb, giving her a determination and a sense of contemporary emancipation alongside Oliver Jackson-Cohen (the curate) and Fionn Whitehead (her inspiring brother). The French-English actress from \u201cSex Education\u201d offers a real added value to a script where the transition and progression in the language of love are clearly displayed and represents this determination to express herself and her point of view even with a limited vocabulary. Her character embodies an eternal youth shouting its desire for freedom and defying the established order, a flame that unlike her entourage is not inextricably bound to reason and finds imagination and a certain \u00ab\u00a0freedom in thought\u00a0\u00bb!<\/p><p>A striking debut feature somewhere between the historical and the poetic that unfortunately faces a limited box-office of only
