Mamie \u00e9l\u00e8ve seule son fils Emmett dans l\u2019amour et la spontan\u00e9it\u00e9 loin de la haine qui caract\u00e9rise le sud des Etats-Unis de l\u2019\u00e9poque. Elle peut travailler dans une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 urbaine et blanche mais plut\u00f4t progressiste qui fait figure de paradis d\u2019exil pour sa famille originaire du Mississipi. \u00ab Till \u00bb met ainsi en sc\u00e8ne la poursuite sans rel\u00e2che de Mamie pour obtenir justice pour son fils de 14 ans brutalement lynch\u00e9 alors qu\u2019il rendait visite \u00e0 ses cousins dans le Sud, seize ans apr\u00e8s la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre chanson \u00ab Strange Fruit \u00bb de Billie Holiday qui d\u00e9non\u00e7ait d\u00e9j\u00e0 le lynchage des Noirs. C\u2019est l\u2019histoire poignante d\u2019une m\u00e8re dont le chagrin se mue en action et dont la d\u00e9termination participera \u00e0 faire \u00e9voluer le pays jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la promulgation par Joe Biden seulement quelques mois avant la sortie du film de la loi Emmett Till anti-lynchage apr\u00e8s des d\u00e9cennies de blocage au S\u00e9nat !<\/p><p>Si l\u2019actualit\u00e9 de cette nouvelle loi justifie le titre fran\u00e7ais, il n\u2019en demeure pas moins trompeur dans la mesure o\u00f9 le r\u00e9cit se concentre sur la m\u00e8re de la victime et sa relation avec son fils. Celle-ci est d\u2019abord affectueuse et intime dans un premier acte insistant sur l\u2019humanit\u00e9 des personnages avant de devenir engag\u00e9e au profit de l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat public comme le confirme la derni\u00e8re phrase que prononce symboliquement Mamie \u00e0 son fils dans le cercueil !<\/p><p>R\u00e9alisatrice r\u00e9compens\u00e9e au festival de Sundance en 2019 pour son film \u00ab Clemency \u00bb sur le milieu carc\u00e9ral, la nig\u00e9rienne d\u2019Alaska Chinonye Chukwu voulait au d\u00e9part faire un film plus l\u00e9ger mais le meurtre de George Floyd en 2020 la pousse \u00e0 \u00e9crire un sc\u00e9nario sur le combat pour la justice de la communaut\u00e9 noire. Seulement, elle d\u00e9cide de ne pas montrer la violence subie par les Noirs et d\u2019insister sur l\u2019amour des personnages. Apr\u00e8s avoir chang\u00e9 d\u2019orientation de production en 2020 en se focalisant sur des projets mettant en avant les minorit\u00e9s, Orion \u2013 la filiale de MGM \u2013 prend en main le projet et le m\u00e8ne jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la course aux Oscars o\u00f9 son actrice principale Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall) passa tout pr\u00e8s d\u2019une nomination.<\/p><p>\u00ab Till \u00bb joue avec nos attentes dans son premier acte en sachant que le meurtre du fils va arriver, mais conserve n\u00e9anmoins une chronologie lin\u00e9aire sans chercher \u00e0 faire une reconstitution des faits fa\u00e7on proc\u00e8s. S\u2019il reste classique dans sa forme de biopic revenant sur un \u00e9v\u00e9nement marquant de l\u2019Histoire, sa r\u00e9alisation fluide nous captive de bout en bout en encha\u00eenant des plans fixes larges et mobiles serr\u00e9s dans un cadrage travaill\u00e9. Entre gros plans sur les yeux de Mamie et reflets dans les miroirs, \u00ab Till \u00bb filme avant tout une m\u00e8re et transmet son r\u00e9cit \u00e0 travers elle.<\/p><p>Danielle Deadwyler porte le film \u2013 tout comme son personnage portait la m\u00e9moire de son fils et la cause noire avec le mouvement NAACP \u2013 avec son impressionnante performance d\u2019actrice dont le jeu est parfois un peu d\u00e9monstratif. Le film l\u2019est d\u2019ailleurs dans l\u2019ensemble avec un r\u00e9cit assez didactique et une bande-originale qui force parfois inutilement l\u2019\u00e9motion des sc\u00e8nes alors qu\u2019elles ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 une autre chanson en lien avec l\u2019intrigue. Mais malgr\u00e9 cela et une v\u00e9rit\u00e9 certes toujours d\u2019actualit\u00e9 mais d\u00e9j\u00e0 connue et vue au cin\u00e9ma, \u00ab Till \u00bb r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 faire progressivement monter la rage du spectateur face \u00e0 ces faits outrageants. Mamie raises her son Emmett alone in love and authenticity, far from the hatred that prevails in the South of the US at the time. She is able to work in an urban and white but rather progressive society that is a kind of exile heaven for her family from Mississippi. \u201cTill\u201d thus depicts Mamie&rsquo;s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son who was brutally lynched while visiting his cousins in the South, sixteen years after Billie Holiday&rsquo;s famous song \u201cStrange Fruit\u201d that already spoke out against black lynching. This is the poignant story of a mother whose grief turns into action and whose determination will help change the country until Joe Biden signs the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act after decades of stalemate in the Senate!<\/p><p>If the topicality of this new law justifies the French title, it is nonetheless misleading insofar as the story focuses on the victim&rsquo;s mother and her relationship with her son. This relationship is initially loving and intimate in a first act that highlights the humanity of the characters before turning into a fight for the public interest, as illustrated by the last words that Mamie symbolically utters to her son in the coffin!<\/p><p>As an award-winning director at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival for her film \u201cClemency\u201d about the prison environment, Alaskan Nigerian Chinonye Chukwu initially wanted to make a lighter film but the murder of George Floyd in 2020 drove her to write a screenplay about the black community&rsquo;s fight for justice. However, she decided not to show the violence suffered by black people and to insist on the characters&rsquo; love. After changing its production line in 2020 by focusing on projects that focus on minorities, MGM&rsquo;s Orion took over the project and led it to the Oscar race, where its lead actress Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall) came close to a nomination.<\/p><p>\u201cTill\u201d plays with our expectations in its first act by anticipating the murder of the son, but nevertheless keeps a linear timeline without trying to make a trial-like reenactment of the facts. If it remains conventional in its formula of a biopic revisiting a significant event in history, its smooth direction captivates us from start to finish by mixing wide still shots and tight moving ones in a carefully crafted framing. Between close-ups on Mamie&rsquo;s eyes and reflections in the mirrors, \u201cTill\u201d films above all a mother and conveys its story through her.<\/p><p>Danielle Deadwyler carries the film &#8211; just as her character carried the memory of her son and the black movement with the NAACP &#8211; with her impressive acting performance, although it can sometimes be a bit demonstrative. The film as a whole is too, with a rather didactic narrative and a soundtrack that sometimes unnecessarily emphasizes the emotion of the scenes when they already have another song related to the plot. But despite this and a truth that is certainly still relevant but already known and seen in movies, \u201cTill\u201d manages to gradually grow the viewer&rsquo;s rage against these outrageous facts. All in all, it is a very good film, both powerful and moving!<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
