Totalement loufoque, compl\u00e8tement chtarb\u00e9, parfaitement tar\u00e9, \u00ab Hundreds of Beavers \u00bb est une p\u00e9pite cin\u00e9matographique comme il en existe peu dans le cin\u00e9ma ind\u00e9pendant ! Rien que son contexte de cr\u00e9ation, de tournage et de production en fait un film \u00e0 part.<\/p><p>Avec un tr\u00e8s petit budget (150\u00a0000 $ \u2013 contre les habituelles dizaines voire centaines de millions crach\u00e9es [et parfois crash\u00e9es] par les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s am\u00e9ricaines), le long-m\u00e9trage est venu d\u2019une id\u00e9e de deux potes, Mike Cheslik et Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, grands amateurs de cin\u00e9 et de jeux vid\u00e9o. Ils ont \u00e9crit des mois durant des centaines de gags qu\u2019ils ont assembl\u00e9s pour en \u00e9crire une histoire \u00e0 mourir de rire et coh\u00e9rente, puis ils ont tourn\u00e9 quelques semaines dans les for\u00eats du Wisconsin et du Michigan, puis Mike a bricol\u00e9 solo tous les montages et effets sp\u00e9ciaux pour un r\u00e9sultat fabuleux\u00a0! Le film n\u2019ayant [initialement] pas trouv\u00e9 de distributeur, l\u2019\u00e9quipe l\u2019a diffus\u00e9 elle-m\u00eame dans quelques cin\u00e9mas du Midwest \u2013 avant de se faire rep\u00e9rer par de grands journaux et festivals.<\/p><p>Mais de quoi parle ce film, au juste\u00a0? L\u2019on suit l\u2019histoire de Jean Kayak, ancien producteur de cidre, qui apprend le m\u00e9tier de trappeur en plein hiver. Apr\u00e8s de nombreux d\u00e9boires, il acquiert suffisamment d\u2019exp\u00e9rience pour pouvoir demander la main de la fille d\u2019un vendeur de fourrure, \u00e0 condition cependant que Jean lui fournisse des centaines de castors\u2026<\/p><p>Divis\u00e9 en deux actes avec une transition peut-\u00eatre tr\u00e8s l\u00e9g\u00e8rement moins prenante, le film est \u00e0 tous points de vue d\u00e9jant\u00e9. C\u2019est une succession infinie de gags intelligemment regroup\u00e9s et qui usent exquis\u00e9ment du burlesque, de la r\u00e9p\u00e9tition, de l\u2019absurde et m\u00eame des clich\u00e9s. Tourn\u00e9 en noir et blanc, le film est on ne peut plus <em>cartoonesque<\/em> et vid\u00e9oludique, avec des musiques amusantes, des animations dessin\u00e9es, des effets sp\u00e9ciaux enfantins et des costumes bas-de-gamme \u2013 le tout \u00e0 la fois tr\u00e8s bien vu et assur\u00e9ment barge. Utterly zany, utterly weird, utterly insane, \u201cHundreds of Beavers\u201d is a cinematic gem like few others in independent cinema! The context of its making, shooting and production alone set it apart from the rest.<\/p><p>With a very low budget ($150,000 \u2013 as opposed to the usual tens or even hundreds of millions spent [and sometimes burned] by American companies), the feature film was the idea of two buddies, Mike Cheslik and Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, both big fans of movies and video games. They wrote hundreds of gags over several months, pieced them together into a coherent, laugh-out-loud story, shot it for a few weeks in the forests of Wisconsin and Michigan, and then had Mike do all the editing and special effects himself, to fabulous effect! As the film [initially] failed to find a distributor, the team screened it themselves in a few Midwest cinemas &#8211; before being spotted by major newspapers and festivals.<\/p><p>But what exactly is this film about? The story focuses on Jean Kayak, a former applejack salesman, who learns the trapping profession in the middle of winter. After many setbacks, he acquires enough experience to be able to ask for the hand of a fur trader&rsquo;s daughter, on one condition: that Jean provide him with hundreds of beavers&#8230;<\/p><p>The film is divided into two acts, with a transition that&rsquo;s perhaps slightly less gripping, but it&rsquo;s crazy in every way. It&rsquo;s an endless succession of cleverly assembled gags that make exquisite use of slapstick, repeat jokes, absurdity and even clich\u00e9s. Shot in black-and-white, the film is cartoony and videogame-like, with playful music, drawn animation, childlike special effects and cheap costumes \u2013 all of which is both very well done and certainly bonkers. The story is, of course, deliberately violent, but in a cartoonish rather than bloodthirsty way, which adds to the comedy of the clashes between the characters (both animal and human).<\/p><p>The plot, which is as hilarious as its protagonist (plad wildly by Ryland Tews), captivates us from start to finish because it&rsquo;s sharper than it seems: in addition to exploring the life of a trapper, the film reminds us that animals are not devoid of intelligence, as in this highly organized and advanced colony of beavers, strangely reminiscent of human society. Packed with references to decades of comic cinema, \u201cHundreds of Beavers\u201d is a joyous blast for anyone who wants to laugh at a timeless film, whether you&rsquo;re a (young) adult or a (grown-up) child.
