La famille Paiva vit heureuse \u00e0 deux pas de l\u2019iconique plage br\u00e9silienne, tout semble parfait, \u00e0 l\u2019exception d\u2019un h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re militaire survolant la ville \u2026 Walter Salles (Carnets de Voyage) signe une fresque historique captivante, \u00e9l\u00e9gante et romanesque qui revient sur la dictature militaire (1964-1985) qui tenait le pays sous sa botte. Une sombre \u00e9poque qui n\u2019a jamais v\u00e9ritablement disparu et laisse encore ses empreintes fascistes dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 l\u2019opposition \u00e9tait musel\u00e9e et r\u00e9duite \u00e0 une r\u00e9sistance pacifique souterraine \u00e0 l\u2019image de Rubens Paiva, ing\u00e9nieur et ex-d\u00e9put\u00e9 travailliste, enlev\u00e9 par le pouvoir et dont l\u2019\u00e9pouse s\u2019est battue durant vingt-cinq ans pour que l\u2019\u00c9tat reconnaisse la mort de ce \u2018disparu\u2019 !<\/p><p>Le r\u00e9alisateur br\u00e9silien, qui a v\u00e9cu cette page noire de l\u2019histoire de son pays et a connu les personnages qu\u2019il d\u00e9peints, adapte ici le livre de Marcelo Rubens Paiva et choisit ainsi de m\u00ealer des destins intimes aux dimensions politiques de ce beau r\u00e9cit de r\u00e9silience et de m\u00e9moire. Il m\u00eale ainsi une chronique familiale et un portrait de femme en s\u2019arrimant au point de vue de l\u2019\u00e9pouse (et m\u00e8re de cinq enfants) \u00e0 partir du moment o\u00f9 son mari est arr\u00eat\u00e9 par des flics en civil qui ferment \u00e0 juste titre les rideaux et volets de cette grande maison qui respirait jusqu\u2019ici l\u2019all\u00e9gresse \u00e0 l\u2019image d\u2019un fascisme obscurantiste.<\/p><p>C\u2019est donc avant tout une chronique familiale mais o\u00f9 le syst\u00e8me totalitaire tient bien un r\u00f4le central dans la mesure o\u00f9 il fracture le r\u00e9cit, cr\u00e9ant un avant et un apr\u00e8s. Walter Salles r\u00e9ussit en cela tr\u00e8s bien \u00e0 nous plonger dans la vie et l\u2019intimit\u00e9 de cette famille en quelques sc\u00e8nes nous donnant l\u2019impression de les conna\u00eetre en \u00e0 peine vingt minutes pour cr\u00e9er d\u2019autant plus d\u2019impact apr\u00e8s l\u2019enl\u00e8vement et v\u00e9ritablement faire ressentir le manque. L\u2019\u00e9vocation \u2018seventies\u2019 \u2013 dont la reconstitution est par ailleurs tr\u00e8s r\u00e9ussie avec ses d\u00e9cors, voitures, photographies et films super-huit \u2013 ajoute \u00e9galement un degr\u00e9 suppl\u00e9mentaire au poids du fascisme en an\u00e9antissant tout cet esprit insouciant aux musiques tropicalistes. Rio de Janeiro. The Paiva family lives happily just a stone&rsquo;s throw from the iconic Brazilian beach. Everything seems perfect, except for a military helicopter flying overhead&#8230; Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) directs a captivating, elegant and romantic historical tale that looks back on the military dictatorship (1964-1985) that held the country under its thumb. A dark era that has never really gone away and still leaves its fascist stamp on society. A time when the opposition was gagged and reduced to a peaceful underground resistance, as embodied by Rubens Paiva, an engineer and former Labour MP who was arrested by the authorities, and whose wife fought for 25 years to have the state acknowledge the death of this \u201cmissing\u201d citizen!<\/p><p>The Brazilian director, who lived through this dark chapter of his country&rsquo;s history and actually knew the characters he depicts, here adapts Marcelo Rubens Paiva&rsquo;s book and thereby chooses to blend intimate destinies with the political dimension of this wonderful story of resilience and reminiscence. He thus blends a family chronicle and a portrait of a woman, focusing on the point of view of the wife (and mother of five children) from the moment her husband is arrested by plainclothes cops who (rightly so) close the curtains and shutters of this large house, which until now radiated cheerfulness just as obscurantist fascism does.<\/p><p>This is therefore above all a family drama, but one in which the totalitarian system does play a key role, as it divides the narrative, creating a before and an after. Walter Salles brilliantly manages to bring us into the life and intimacy of this family in just a few scenes, giving us the feeling of knowing them in barely twenty minutes, thereby increasing the impact of the aftermath of the kidnapping and really making us feel the loss. The seventies atmosphere \u2013 beautifully recreated with sets, cars, photographs and super-8 films \u2013 also adds a further degree to the weight of fascism, wiping out the carefree spirit of tropical music. Its weight is then measured in successive losses, from the father, of course, to the family&rsquo;s property and clothes, to smiles, joy&#8230; as well as a home.<\/p><p>Best screenplay winner at the Venice Film Festival, this intimate historical battle against oblivion has won over Brazilian audiences with over 3 million tickets sold, and has also won international acclaim with a recent <em>Golden Globe<\/em> win for its lead actress Fernanda Torres, who also has a good chance of being nominated for an <em>Oscar<\/em>&#8230; we&rsquo;ll find out tomorrow!<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
