Ce rassemblement extr\u00eamement secret y est racont\u00e9 avec minutie dans l\u2019introduction de ce qui va s\u2019\u00e9riger en v\u00e9ritable lutte de pouvoir et jeux d\u2019alliances politiques pour que des hommes puissent d\u00e9terminer la volont\u00e9 de Dieu.<\/p><p>Edward Berger \u2013 qui avait r\u00e9alis\u00e9 le tr\u00e8s esth\u00e9tique remake de \u00ab\u00a0A l\u2019ouest rien de nouveau\u00a0\u00bb il y a deux ans \u2013 nous plonge dans ce monde \u00e0 la fois unique et sorte de micro-soci\u00e9t\u00e9 o\u00f9 cohabitent archa\u00efque et moderne (\u00e0 l\u2019image des contrastes technologiques et architecturaux). Les d\u00e9cors y sont ainsi reconstitu\u00e9s avec pr\u00e9cision et \u00e9l\u00e9gance (dans les studios de <em>Cinecitta<\/em> pour la chapelle Sixtine et la R\u00e9sidence Saint-Marthe) dans ce huis-clos o\u00f9 les cardinaux sont isol\u00e9s et coup\u00e9s du monde sur la dur\u00e9e de l\u2019\u00e9lection. Cet enfermement se retrouve jusque dans le mixage son avec une r\u00e9sonance presque constante des voix comme si on ne sortait jamais d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce. La musique de Volker Bertelmann renforce \u00e9galement cette amplification des sons avec une composition oppressante et alarmante.<\/p><p>Ces d\u00e9cors sont magnifiquement mis en sc\u00e8ne par le chef op\u00e9rateur fran\u00e7ais St\u00e9phane Fontaine (Un Proph\u00e8te\u00a0; Jackie\u00a0; Captain Fantastic\u00a0; Revoir Paris) qui joue de la sym\u00e9trie des lieux, des contrastes de couleurs avec les costumes, des lignes de fuite et \u00e9videmment de quelques plans symboliques pour rendre ce cadre somptueux et renforcer la singularit\u00e9 de la d\u00e9cision \u00e0 prendre. Une d\u00e9cision qui sera d\u00e9battue par les diff\u00e9rentes factions de cardinaux jou\u00e9s par Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellito et bien s\u00fbr le Doyen du Sacr\u00e9 Coll\u00e8ge interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Ralph Fiennes (Le Patient anglais\u00a0; The Grand Budapest Hotel). Celui-ci est justement charg\u00e9 d\u2019organiser le scrutin et de veiller \u00e0 son bon d\u00e9roulement, et livre une performance tr\u00e8s th\u00e9\u00e2trale avec une sorte d\u2019intensit\u00e9 \u00e0 la fois calme et troublante.<\/p><p>Le sc\u00e9nario \u00e9crit par Peter Straughan (La Taupe) et adapt\u00e9 du roman de Robert Harris, suit ainsi le Doyen en conservant cet unique point de vue tout au long d\u2019un processus \u00e9lectoral plein de surprises et de rebondissements. \u00ab\u00a0Conclave\u00a0\u00bb nous embarque ainsi dans un r\u00e9cit haletant particuli\u00e8rement bien construit au gr\u00e9 de dialogues multilingues percutants et autour d\u2019hommes qui tentent de concilier leur vote et leur foi alors que le Pape ne semble pas d\u00e9sireux d\u2019attendre un miracle innocent. Mais dans sa qualit\u00e9 premi\u00e8re de pur thriller, l\u2019appr\u00e9ciation d\u2019un tel film d\u00e9pendra principalement de sa r\u00e9solution, or son ultime sc\u00e8ne (post-d\u00e9nouement) ne satisfera probablement pas tout le monde. The story of this highly secretive gathering is meticulously told in the opening minutes of what will turn out to be a real power struggle and a game of political alliances as men strive to set God&rsquo;s will.<\/p><p>Edward Berger \u2013 who directed the beautiful remake of \u201cAll Quiet on the Western Front\u201d two years ago \u2013 takes us into this world, which is both unique and a kind of micro-society, where the archaic and the modern coexist (just like the technological and architectural stark contrasts). The sets are precisely and elegantly recreated (in the <em>Cinecitta<\/em> studios for the Sistine Chapel and St. Martha&rsquo;s Residence) in this closed-door setting, where the cardinals are cut off from the world for the duration of the election. This isolation is also reflected in the sound mix, with voices resonating almost constantly, as if you never left the room. Volker Bertelmann&rsquo;s music also adds to this sound intensification with an oppressive, ominous score.<\/p><p>These sets are spectacularly framed by French cinematographer St\u00e9phane Fontaine (Un Proph\u00e8te; Jackie; Captain Fantastic; Revoir Paris), who plays on the symmetry of the locations, the color contrasts with the costumes, the vanishing lines and, of course, a few symbolic shots to make the setting sumptuous and emphasize the singularity of the decision to be made. A decision that will be debated by the various factions of cardinals played by Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellito and, of course, the Dean of the Sacred College played by Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient; The Grand Budapest Hotel). He&rsquo;s in charge of organizing the ballot and making sure it runs smoothly, and delivers a highly dramatic performance with a quiet yet troubled intensity.<\/p><p>The screenplay, written by Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and adapted from Robert Harris&rsquo;s novel, follows the Dean from this single point of view all the way through an election process full of surprises and twists. \u201cConclave\u201d therefore takes us on a particularly well-crafted, breathless journey through striking multilingual dialogues, centered around men trying to grapple with their vote and their faith, while the Pope seems unwilling to expect an innocent miracle. But as a pure thriller, the enjoyment of such a film will mainly rely on its resolution, and its final scene will probably leave a few wondering. But beyond the highly successful suspense, the film also features an existential drama where two opposing worldviews clash over a plethora of issues (administration, the status of women, homosexuality, competing faiths, and so on) in a theater of deceptively sincere ambition and humility.<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
