Comme toutes les suites produites ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es par Hollywood prolongeant une histoire vieille de plus de deux d\u00e9cennies (Top Gun\u00a0; Beetlejuice\u00a0; Ghostbusters\u00a0; Indiana Jones etc.), \u00ab\u00a0Gladiator II\u00a0\u00bb joue avant tout sur le facteur nostalgique \u2013 peut-\u00eatre m\u00eame trop \u2013 ce qui aura pour effet de cr\u00e9er diff\u00e9rents niveaux d\u2019attentes chez le public en fonction de sa propre nostalgie\/appr\u00e9ciation du premier film. Certains seront alors vou\u00e9s \u00e0 \u00eatre d\u00e9\u00e7us \u2026<\/p><p>Le principal objectif d\u2019un tel film n\u2019est autre que le pur spectacle et vu sous cet angle il est ind\u00e9niable que \u00ab\u00a0Gladiator II\u00a0\u00bb nous sert un grand divertissement spectaculaire d\u00e8s sa sc\u00e8ne d\u2019introduction (moins m\u00e9morable probablement que celle du premier parce qu\u2019elle joue sur une \u00e9motion qui ne peut pas \u00eatre d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sente) mais qui fonctionne particuli\u00e8rement bien pour nous plonger dans la dimension \u00e9pique de ce film. Ridley Scott d\u00e9montre une nouvelle fois qu\u2019il sait admirablement bien filmer et particuli\u00e8rement les s\u00e9quences d\u2019action en multipliant les sc\u00e8nes ahurissantes de bataille et reconstituant magnifiquement la Rome antique autour du Colis\u00e9e (bien que le rythme du film ne laisse peut-\u00eatre pas assez de temps pour profiter de tous ces d\u00e9cors).<\/p><p>D\u2019un point de vue technique (photo, vfx, d\u00e9cors, costumes) c\u2019est donc globalement tr\u00e8s r\u00e9ussi, \u00e0 l\u2019exception des musiques qui sont clairement moins m\u00e9morables que celles du premier dont c\u2019\u00e9tait l\u2019un des gros points forts. Le fait est que cette fois-ci, Hans Zimmer a refus\u00e9 de continuer son travail sur le premier, et c\u2019est donc Harry Gregson-Williams (Narnia\u00a0; Shrek\u00a0; Kingdom of Heaven) qui le remplace et opte pour un m\u00e9lange entre des compositions du premier (qui sont toujours aussi fortes mais jouent sur la nostalgie) et quelques nouvelles musiques qui encadrent plus les sc\u00e8nes qu\u2019elles ne les \u00e9l\u00e8vent \u2013 un peu \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d\u2019une suite comme \u00ab\u00a0Avatar 2\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p><p>Mais comme souvent chez Ridley Scott, c\u2019est avant tout le visuel et le spectacle qui priment sur le sc\u00e9nario \u2026 ce n\u2019est pas nouveau. Sans \u00eatre non plus un copi\u00e9\/coll\u00e9, c\u2019est in\u00e9vitablement une intrigue qui ne prend pas trop de risques et fait beaucoup de parall\u00e8les avec le premier, probablement trop, alors qu\u2019elle aurait pu plus se concentrer sur les enjeux romains qui y sont d\u00e9crits sans toujours les relier aux personnages du premier film. Les personnages souffrent de mani\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de sous-d\u00e9veloppement. D\u2019une part pour le personnage de Connie Nielsen qui est de retour, justement, parce qu\u2019elle ne sert qu\u2019\u00e0 connecter l\u2019histoire du 1 et du 2 sans beaucoup d\u2019autre int\u00e9r\u00eat. Et d\u2019autre part, parce que le sc\u00e9nario de cette suite a tout simplement d\u00e9doubl\u00e9 les personnages de Maximus et de Commode. Le r\u00f4le principal de Russell Crowe dans le premier est ainsi un peu divis\u00e9 en deux avec le personnage de Pedro Pascal en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral romain et celui du nouveau r\u00f4le principal Paul Mescal \u2013 dont c\u2019est le premier blockbuster apr\u00e8s des productions ind\u00e9pendantes (Normal People\u00a0; Aftersun\u00a0; Sans jamais nous conna\u00eetre) \u2013 en gladiateur revanchard captur\u00e9 en Afrique du Nord. Et il en va de m\u00eame pour le personnage de Joaquin Phoenix, qui est ici divis\u00e9 en deux empereurs fous. Cela rend chacun de ces quatre personnages un peu plus creux et occupe deux fois plus de temps d\u2019\u00e9cran pour une histoire assez similaire sur ces personnages-l\u00e0.<\/p><p>Mais si ce d\u00e9doublement peut sembler r\u00e9p\u00e9titif, il apporte aussi quelques nouveaut\u00e9s notamment avec l\u2019opposition entre les deux ennemis secrets de Rome. L\u2019ajout d\u2019une dimension plus politique avec le personnage de Denzel Washington est \u00e9galement un changement vraiment int\u00e9ressant qui prend m\u00eame le pas sur l\u2019intrigue principale. C\u2019est donc une histoire proche du premier, mais qui r\u00e9ussit n\u00e9anmoins \u00e0 nous captiver jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la fin malgr\u00e9 le fait qu\u2019elle manque un peu de vivant et d\u2019\u00e9motion par rapport au premier.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Gladiator II\u00a0\u00bb remplit donc correctement sa mission avec des visuels convaincants et un sc\u00e9nario satisfaisant. Mais arrive enfin la vraie question\u00a0: cette mission \u00e9tait-elle n\u00e9cessaire\u00a0? Narrativement, non. Le premier n\u2019avait pas besoin d\u2019une suite et encore moins d\u2019une suite qui fait globalement la m\u00eame chose. Et commercialement\u00a0? Oui et non, car il est s\u00fbr qu\u2019il va remplir des salles de par le monde, mais avec son budget encore une fois gigantesque, il sera difficilement rentable. Ce n\u2019est donc pas une suite inint\u00e9ressante et ennuyante mais son utilit\u00e9 n\u2019appara\u00eetra \u00e9vidente ni au public ni au studio.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42480e6 elementor-widget__width-initial exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42480e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Twenty-four years after the success of the first \u201cGladiator\u201d, Ridley Scott is back with a sequel to the five-Oscar-winning peplum that has since become iconic for an entire generation. Like all Hollywood productions extending a story more than two decades old in the last few years (Top Gun; Beetlejuice; Ghostbusters; Indiana Jones etc.), \u201cGladiator II\u201d plays above all on the nostalgia card \u2013 perhaps even too much so \u2013 which will lead to different levels of expectation among audiences, depending on their own nostalgia\/esteem for the first film. Some are then bound to be let down&#8230;<\/p><p>The main goal of such a film is pure spectacle, and in this respect there&rsquo;s no denying that \u201cGladiator II\u201d delivers spectacular entertainment right from its opening scene (probably less breathtaking than the first, because it draws on an emotion that can&rsquo;t already be there), but which works particularly well to throw us into the film&rsquo;s epic dimension. Ridley Scott once again proves that he knows how to film admirably well, especially action sequences, with multiple astonishing battle scenes and a splendid recreation of ancient Rome around the Colosseum (although the pace of the film perhaps doesn&rsquo;t leave enough time to enjoy all these sets).<\/p><p>From a technical point of view (photography, vfx, sets, costumes) it&rsquo;s therefore very well done overall, with the exception of the score, which is clearly less memorable than in the first film, where it was one of the highlights. This time around, Hans Zimmer declined to come back, so Harry Gregson-Williams (Narnia; Shrek; Kingdom of Heaven) replaced him, opting for a mix of compositions from the first film (which are as strong as ever, but rely on nostalgia) and some new music that supports the scenes rather than elevates them \u2013 a bit like for a sequel like \u201cAvatar 2\u201d.<\/p><p>But as is often the case with Ridley Scott, it&rsquo;s the visuals and spectacle that take precedence over the script&#8230; nothing really new there. Without being a copy\/paste either, it&rsquo;s unavoidably a plot that doesn&rsquo;t take too many risks and draws a lot of parallels with the first film, probably too many, when it could have focused more on the Roman issues that are described without always connecting them to the first film&rsquo;s characters. The characters generally lack development. On one hand, for Connie Nielsen&rsquo;s character, who is back, it&rsquo;s precisely because she only brings the story of 1 and 2 together, without much other purpose. And on the other hand, it&rsquo;s because the script for this sequel has simply split up the characters of Maximus and Commodus. Russell Crowe&rsquo;s lead role in the first is thus split in two, with Pedro Pascal&rsquo;s character as a Roman general and new lead Paul Mescal &#8211; whose first blockbuster after independent productions (Normal People; Aftersun; Without Ever Knowing Us) \u2013 as a vengeful gladiator captured in North Africa. And the same goes for Joaquin Phoenix&rsquo;s character, who is here divided into two mad emperors. This makes each of these four characters a little emptier, and takes up twice as much screen time for a fairly similar story.<\/p><p>But while this doubling-up may seem repetitive, it also brings a few new developments, especially with the opposition between Rome&rsquo;s two secret enemies. The addition of a deeper political dimension with Denzel Washington&rsquo;s character is also a really interesting change that even overshadows the main plot. So, it&rsquo;s a story that&rsquo;s close to the first, but nevertheless manages to captivate us right to the end, despite the fact that it lacks a little of the vibrancy and emotion of the first.<\/p><p>\u201cGladiator II\u201d therefore fulfills its mission properly, with compelling visuals and a satisfying storyline. But then comes the real question: was this mission necessary? Story-wise, no. The first film didn&rsquo;t need a sequel, and even less so a sequel that does essentially the same thing. And commercially? Yes and no, because it&rsquo;s sure to fill cinemas all over the world, but with its once again gigantic budget, it will hardly be profitable.
