En effet, apr\u00e8s l\u2019excellent \u00ab Dune \u00bb de Denis Villeneuve achevant une s\u00e9rie de tentatives infructueuses d\u2019adaptation de l\u2019\u0153uvre de Frank Herbert, c\u2019est au tour du \u00ab Cycle de Fondation \u00bb d\u2019Isaac Asimov \u00e9crit dans les ann\u00e9es 1940 d\u2019\u00eatre enfin adapt\u00e9. Apr\u00e8s plusieurs projets dans les ann\u00e9es 2000, c\u2019est finalement Apple qui emporte le march\u00e9 et sort fin septembre une s\u00e9rie de 10 \u00e9pisodes venant entamer cette saga mill\u00e9naire. L\u2019histoire se situe dans une galaxie o\u00f9 un Empire centenaire r\u00e8gne gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un h\u00e9ritage clon\u00e9 permettant un pouvoir in\u00e9gal\u00e9. Mais quand Hari Seldon, un professeur de psychohistoire, pr\u00e9dit la chute de l\u2019Empire, il est envoy\u00e9 avec ses fid\u00e8les aux confins de la galaxie pour y b\u00e2tir la Fondation destin\u00e9e \u00e0 la pr\u00e9servation du savoir de la civilisation en cas de destruction et dans l\u2019espoir d\u2019une reconstruction future.<\/p><p>\u00ab <em>Une chance r\u00e9p\u00e9titive n&rsquo;est jamais de la chance<\/em> \u00bb<\/p><p>Avant de rentrer plus dans le d\u00e9tail de cette s\u00e9rie tr\u00e8s riche, sans toutefois spoiler quoi que ce soit, il est important d\u2019annoncer la couleur directement avec un avis tr\u00e8s g\u00e9n\u00e9ral et globalement tr\u00e8s positif. B\u00e9n\u00e9ficiant d\u2019un gros budget pour une s\u00e9rie et en particulier pour une premi\u00e8re saison, \u00ab Foundation \u00bb nous met tout d\u2019abord une claque visuelle. Les plans sont magnifiques et nous transportent dans divers univers, des salles closes du palais imp\u00e9rial riche en couleurs et en sym\u00e9trie aux sc\u00e8nes sur la plan\u00e8te Terminus aux confins de la galaxie dans un d\u00e9sert de sel, en passant par plusieurs sc\u00e8nes spatiales splendides de l\u2019ordre de longs-m\u00e9trages des plus grosses sagas de SF.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14724 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2125.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2125.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2125-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2125-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2125-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Mais l\u2019esth\u00e9tique ne fait pas tout, et \u00ab Foundation \u00bb ne brille pas que par sa forme mais bien aussi par son fond abordant des th\u00e8mes int\u00e9ressants d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s en profondeur sans pr\u00e9cipitation. La construction de la s\u00e9rie en tant que telle est \u00e9galement engageante avec de bons <em>cliffhangers<\/em> \u00e0 la fin des \u00e9pisodes et d\u2019excellents derniers \u00e9pisodes. Le seul b\u00e9mol de la s\u00e9rie serait son rythme bien plus lent que les s\u00e9ries actuelles et son manque de mordant dans les relations entre ses personnages quand elle se concentre plus sur des enjeux galactiques et \u00e9thiques mais au vu du texte original, on ne peut reprocher cela \u00e0 une adaptation du texte d\u2019Asimov.<\/p><p>\u00ab <em>Toutes les choses ont un cycle. Apr\u00e8s la destruction, la renaissance. La connaissance nous donne les moyens de survivre \u00e0 la destruction jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce que la renaissance arrive<\/em> \u00bb<\/p><p>En effet il appara\u00eet tr\u00e8s difficile d\u2019adapter cette \u0153uvre comme l\u2019explique David S. Goyer au <em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em> \u201cIl y a trois aspects retors qui, je pense, ont fait couler les autres adaptations : le premier est que l\u2019histoire s\u2019\u00e9tend sur 1 000 ans, avec pas mal de sauts dans le temps, ce qui complique la narration. Le deuxi\u00e8me, c\u2019est que les livres empruntent parfois une forme anthologique, avec des parenth\u00e8ses centr\u00e9es sur un personnage en particulier, comme Salvor Hardin, puis on fait des sauts d\u2019un si\u00e8cle dans le temps pour se retrouver avec un tout nouveau protagoniste. Le troisi\u00e8me, enfin, c\u2019est que les romans ne sont pas vraiment charg\u00e9s \u00e9motionnellement\u201d. La s\u00e9rie cr\u00e9\u00e9e et \u00e9crite par David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) et Josh Friedman (Snowpiercer) s\u2019attelle donc \u00e0 rattraper le manque d\u2019engagement \u00e9motionnel des romans et r\u00e9ussit globalement sa mission m\u00eame si l\u2019on ne peut s\u2019emp\u00eacher de noter qu\u2019on n\u2019est pas totalement pris aux tripes par les relations entre les personnages. Mais il est important de souligner \u00e0 cet \u00e9gard, que la s\u00e9rie met en sc\u00e8ne une structure inhabituelle sautant r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement des ann\u00e9es voire des si\u00e8cles ce qui ne facilite pas l\u2019attachement aux personnages m\u00eame si elle parvient tout de m\u00eame \u00e0 trouver des moyens pour cr\u00e9er une certaine r\u00e9currence des personnages comme avec l\u2019Empereur qui est en fait un triumvirat de trois clones \u00e0 diff\u00e9rents \u00e2ges installant ainsi une certaine stabilit\u00e9 dans la galaxie mais aussi dans notre visionnage.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14726 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2127.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2127.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2127-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2127-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2127-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>\u00ab <em>Ce n&rsquo;est pas de l&rsquo;amour si on ne souffre pas<\/em> \u00bb<\/p><p>D\u00e8s le premier \u00e9pisode on comprend qu\u2019il est en effet question avant tout d\u2019enjeux galactiques, de math\u00e9matiques pr\u00e9dictives et du sort de soci\u00e9t\u00e9s enti\u00e8res. Mais d\u00e8s le second, la s\u00e9rie introduit une romance, une enqu\u00eate et un secret soit une trame \u00e9motionnelle, un suspense et un myst\u00e8re permettant d\u2019accrocher le spectateur. Donc malgr\u00e9 des th\u00e8mes tr\u00e8s larges et une histoire \u00e9tal\u00e9e sur plusieurs si\u00e8cles, \u00ab Foundation \u00bb r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 se concentrer sur des personnages et des intrigues resserr\u00e9es sans se perdre dans l\u2019immensit\u00e9 de sa galaxie. Cela passe notamment par la narration du personnage de Gaal qui n\u2019est pas lin\u00e9aire. Son personnage agit certes de mani\u00e8re chronologique mais la narration qu\u2019elle fait du r\u00e9cit est quant \u00e0 elle intemporelle et omnisciente. Mais si ce ne sont donc pas forc\u00e9ment les relations qui captivent le spectateur, c\u2019est parce que la s\u00e9rie met surtout en valeur la puissance des id\u00e9es.<\/p><p>\u00ab <em>Les maths ne sont jamais que des chiffres. Quand les mots nous manquent, les maths nous d\u00e9crivent l&rsquo;inexprimable. Les choses qui nous terrifient le plus. L&rsquo;immensit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;espace, la forme du temps, le poids et la valeur d&rsquo;une \u00e2me humaine<\/em> \u00bb<\/p><p>\u00ab Foundation \u00bb c\u2019est en effet un conte \u00e0 la gloire de la science et de la r\u00e9flexion progressiste face \u00e0 l\u2019oppression des puissants cyclis\u00e9s. La s\u00e9rie aborde plusieurs th\u00e8mes d\u2019abord de mani\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale pour venir ensuite les nuancer avec des opinions divergentes ou des variations modifiant le cycle habituel comme avec les clones Cl\u00e9on qui sont tous similaires en apparence et en comp\u00e9tences mais qui interpr\u00e8tent n\u00e9anmoins chacun \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re les \u00e9v\u00e9nements qu\u2019ils vivent. La question sous-jacente ici est ainsi ira-t-on jusqu\u2019\u00e0 se retrouver face \u00e0 un clone r\u00e9ellement diff\u00e9rent ? Mais la s\u00e9rie aborde \u00e9galement le th\u00e8me de la robotisation et du d\u00e9passement de la machine \u00e0 travers la question de l\u2019\u00e2me des machines et du vide des humains. Elle questionne encore les mod\u00e8les pr\u00e9dictifs de plus en plus r\u00e9pandus pour de nombreux usages aujourd\u2019hui. Et comme toute bonne SF, elle traite donc de th\u00e8mes qui r\u00e9sonnent avec notre pr\u00e9sent. Mais elle emprunte \u00e9galement aux mythes avec un r\u00e9cit s\u2019approchant du biblique par moments.<\/p><p>\u00ab <em>La violence est le dernier refuge des incomp\u00e9tents<\/em> \u00bb<\/p><p>La religion est \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sente au sein m\u00eame de l\u2019intrigue avec un parall\u00e8le paradoxal entre science et religion dans la mesure o\u00f9 l\u2019Empire cherche \u00e0 tout prix \u00e0 \u00e9viter de faire du professeur Seldon un martyr. A travers l\u2019exil vers Terminus, les adeptes de la science qu\u2019est la psychohistoire et qui se devaient d\u2019\u00eatre des \u00ab fondateurs \u00bb deviennent finalement des r\u00e9volutionnaires port\u00e9s par une unique croyance. Le math\u00e9maticien devient alors proph\u00e8te et ce qui est propre \u00e0 la science devient aux yeux de certains une v\u00e9ritable religion m\u00e9ritant de se battre pour en prot\u00e9ger la croyance conciliant ainsi les deux piliers oppos\u00e9s par le positivisme d\u2019auteurs tel qu\u2019Auguste Comte. Si les sc\u00e8nes sont bien tourn\u00e9es, l\u2019action appara\u00eet tout \u00e0 fait correcte pour une s\u00e9rie mais ce n\u2019est n\u00e9anmoins pas l\u00e0 o\u00f9 elle brille le plus. Donc, malgr\u00e9 les critiques de complexit\u00e9 de la s\u00e9rie, je trouve qu\u2019au vu de l\u2019ampleur de l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019origine, il s\u2019agit d\u2019une bonne adaptation m\u00ealant th\u00e8mes et intrigues actuelles avec une chronologie coh\u00e9rente. La s\u00e9rie a en effet d\u00fb s\u2019adapter \u00e0 son \u00e9poque, autant dans les th\u00e8mes que dans son r\u00e9cit avec une quasi absence de personnages f\u00e9minins dans l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019origine. Trois personnages principaux sont ainsi f\u00e9minis\u00e9s dans la s\u00e9rie qui r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 lier entre ces diff\u00e9rents personnages d\u00e9connect\u00e9s les uns des autres dans les livres. Les acteurs incarnent leur personnage avec malice, en particulier Lee Pace qui s\u2019amuse dans le r\u00f4le du Fr\u00e8re Jour Cl\u00e9on qu\u2019il incarne diff\u00e9remment en fonction des si\u00e8cles. Les jeunes Lou Llobell et Leah Harvey se r\u00e9v\u00e8lent dans les r\u00f4les principaux aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Jared Harris en professeur proph\u00e8te.<\/p><p>\u00ab <em>L&rsquo;Histoire est l&rsquo;arme ultime, car elle exploite le temps lui-m\u00eame. Utilis\u00e9 correctement, le pass\u00e9 peut modifier le pr\u00e9sent<\/em> \u00bb<\/p><p>Pour terminer, \u00ab Foundation \u00bb est donc une tr\u00e8s bonne s\u00e9rie et \u00e0 mon sens une bonne adaptation qui promet de belles choses pour la suite. Si l\u2019une des intrigues n\u2019a pas vraiment r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 me captiver pleinement jusqu\u2019\u00e0 un certain nombre d\u2019\u00e9pisodes, la richesse de la s\u00e9rie et la vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de ses th\u00e9matiques et chronologies m\u00e9ritent le coup d\u2019\u0153il d\u2019autant que visuellement c\u2019est \u00e9blouissant. Son rythme lent et son intrigue d\u00e9structur\u00e9e risquent en revanche de ne pas plaire \u00e0 tous. Mais elle nous offre n\u00e9anmoins l\u2019acc\u00e8s \u00e0 un monde bien construit et un riche univers digne des grandes saga SF.<\/p><p>Pour moi il s\u2019agit donc de l\u2019une des \u0153uvres de l\u2019ann\u00e9e ! Malheureusement, \u00e0 l\u2019heure de la renaissance du \u00ab Dune \u00bb de Frank Herbet, l\u2019\u0153uvre fondatrice d\u2019Isaac Asimov passe, elle, au second plan. Comme d\u2019habitude derni\u00e8rement, Apple sort des \u0153uvres de grande qualit\u00e9 sur sa plateforme mais rechigne \u00e0 les promouvoir avec les grands moyens. Il est \u00e0 esp\u00e9rer que cette s\u00e9rie ne tombera pas dans l\u2019oubli d\u2019<em>Apple TV+ <\/em>pour qu\u2019on ait la chance de suivre la suite de cette adaptation du cycle fondateur de la science-fiction. Les deux <em>showrunners<\/em> ont en effet pr\u00e9vu un total de huit saisons ce qui peut sembler beaucoup comme de nombreuses \u0153uvres r\u00e9centes qui planifient d\u2019innombrables suites, mais dans ce cas pr\u00e9cis, l\u2019adaptation de l\u2019ensemble du \u00ab Cycle de Fondation \u00bb pourrait bien n\u00e9cessiter 80 \u00e9pisodes en effet. Indeed, after Denis Villeneuve&rsquo;s outstanding \u201cDune\u201d, bringing to an end a series of unsuccessful attempts to adapt Frank Herbert&rsquo;s work, it is now up to Isaac Asimov&rsquo;s \u201cFoundation Series\u201d, written in the 1940s, to be adapted. After several projects in the 2000s, Apple finally got the deal and released a 10-episode series at the end of September to kick off this millennial saga. The story is set in a galaxy where a century-old Empire reigns thanks to a cloned legacy that allows for unparalleled power. But when Hari Seldon, a professor of psychohistory, predicts the fall of the Empire, he is sent with his followers to the farthest reaches of the galaxy to build a Foundation to preserve the knowledge of the civilization in case of destruction and in the hope of a future rebuilding.<\/p><p>\u201c<em>Repeated luck is never luck<\/em>\u201d<\/p><p>Before going into the details of this very rich series, without spoiling anything, it is important to directly set the tone with a very general and overall, very positive opinion. First of all, thanks to a big budget for a series and in particular for a first season, \u201cFoundation\u201d is visually striking. The shots are magnificent and transport us in various universes, from the closed rooms of the imperial palace rich in colors and symmetry to the scenes on the Terminus planet at the confines of the galaxy in a salt desert, as well as several spectacular space scenes worthy of the biggest SF sagas.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14724 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2125.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2125.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2125-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2125-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2125-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>But aesthetics is not everything, and \u201cFoundation\u201d does not only shine by its form but also by its content addressing interesting themes developed in depth without haste. The structure of the series as such is also engaging with good cliffhangers at the end of the episodes and excellent final episodes. The only drawback of the series would be its slower pace than the current shows and its lack of grip in the relationships between its characters when it focuses more on galactic and ethical issues, but given the original text, we can&rsquo;t reproach that to an adaptation of Asimov&rsquo;s work.<\/p><p>\u201c<em>All things have a circle. After destruction, rebirth. Knowledge gives us ways to survive the destruction until the rebirth arrives<\/em>\u201d<\/p><p>Indeed, it seems very challenging to adapt this piece as David S. Goyer explains to The Hollywood Reporter \u00ab\u00a0There are three tricky aspects that I think have sunk other adaptations: the first is that the story spans over 1,000 years, with quite a few jumps in time, which complicates the narrative. The second is that the books sometimes take an anthological nature, with digressions centered on a particular character, such as Salvor Hardin, and then we jump a century in time to find ourselves with a brand-new protagonist. The third is that the novels are not really emotionally driven. The series created and written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Josh Friedman (Snowpiercer) thus tries to make up for the lack of emotional appeal of the novels and succeeds overall in its mission, even if we can&rsquo;t help but notice that we are not totally gripped by the relationships between the characters. But as soon as the second episode, the series introduces a romance, an investigation and a secret, that is to say an emotional thread, a suspense and a mystery allowing the spectator to be hooked. So, despite the broad themes and a history spread over several centuries, \u201cFoundation\u201d manages to focus on characters and tight plots without getting lost in the vastness of its galaxy. One way this is achieved is through the non-linear narrative of Gaal&rsquo;s character. Although her character acts chronologically, her narration of the story is timeless and omniscient. But if it is not necessarily the relationships that engage the viewer, it is because the series emphasizes the power of ideas.<\/p><p>\u201c<em>Math is never just numbers. When words fail us, we use math to describe the inexpressible. The things that terrify us most. The vastness of space, the shape of time, the weight and worth of a human soul<\/em>\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cFoundation\u201d is indeed a tale to the glory of science and progressive thinking in the face of oppression by the powerful cyclicals. The series approaches several themes in a general way and then comes to nuance them with divergent opinions or variations modifying the usual cycle as with the Cleon clones who are all similar in appearance and skills but who nevertheless interpret each in their own way the events they live. The underlying question here is whether we will ever find ourselves confronted with a truly different clone. But the series also addresses the theme of robotization and the overcoming of the machine through the question of the soul of machines and the emptiness of humans. It also questions the predictive models that are more and more prevalent for many uses today. And therefore, like all good SF, it deals with themes that echo with our present. But it also borrows from myths with a story getting close to the biblical at times.<\/p><p>\u201c<em>Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent<\/em>\u201d<\/p><p>Religion is also included in the plot, with a paradoxical parallel between science and religion insofar as the Empire seeks at all costs to avoid making Professor Seldon a martyr. Through their exile to Terminus, the followers of the science that is psychohistory, who were supposed to be \u00ab\u00a0founders\u00a0\u00bb, finally become revolutionaries driven by a single belief. The mathematician then becomes a prophet and what is proper to science becomes, in the eyes of some, a true religion worth fighting to protect its belief, thereby combining the two pillars opposed by the positivism of authors such as Auguste Comte. The Prime Radiant, a key item in the plot, can thus be seen in the light of the Religions of the Book.<\/p><p>\u201c<em>It takes more power to build than to burn<\/em>\u201d<\/p><p>Goyer&rsquo;s pitch to Apple to describe the series was, \u00ab\u00a0It&rsquo;s a chess game between Hari Seldon and the Empire, which lasts a thousand years. If the scenes are well shot, the action appears quite decent for a series but it is nevertheless not where it shines the most. So, despite the criticisms of the complexity of the series, I find that given the magnitude of the original work, it is a good adaptation mixing themes and current plots with a coherent chronology. The series has indeed had to adapt to its time, as much in the themes as in its story with a near absence of female characters in the original work. Three main characters are thus feminized in the series which manages to link these different characters disconnected from each other in the books. The actors embody their characters with malice, especially Lee Pace who has fun in the role of Brother Day Cleon that he embodies differently depending on the centuries. Young Lou Llobell and Leah Harvey shine in the lead roles alongside Jared Harris as the prophet professor.<\/p><p>\u201c<em>History is the ultimate weapon, because it harnesses time itself. <\/em><em>Used correctly, the past can alter the present<\/em>\u201d<\/p><p>To conclude, \u201cFoundation\u201d is a very good series and in my opinion a good adaptation that has great potential for the future. If one of the plots didn&rsquo;t really manage to captivate me fully until a certain number of episodes, the richness of the series and the variety of its themes and timelines deserve a watch, especially since visually it is stunning. Its slow pace and unstructured plot may not please everyone however. But it offers us nevertheless the access to a well-constructed world and a rich universe worthy of the great SF sagas.<\/p><p>For me it is one of the best creations of the year! Unfortunately, at a time when Frank Herbet&rsquo;s \u201cDune\u201d is being revived, Isaac Asimov&rsquo;s founding work falls into the background. As usual lately, Apple releases high quality works on its platform but is reluctant to promote them big time. Let&rsquo;s hope that this series will not fall into the Apple TV+ oblivion so that we can have the chance to follow the continuation of this adaptation of science fiction&rsquo;s founding cycle. The two showrunners have indeed planned a total of eight seasons which may seem like a lot as many recent works that plan countless sequels, but in this case, the adaptation of the entire \u201cFoundation Series\u201d may well require 80 episodes indeed. Will it become the new \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d?
