center;\"><strong>Yip Man et le cin\u00e9ma<br \/><\/strong><\/p><p>Si vous connaissez le Kung Fu gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Po le Panda de chez Dreamworks Animation, il est peut-\u00eatre temps de plonger dans l\u2019histoire de l\u2019un de ses plus grands ma\u00eetres. Bruce Lee me diriez-vous ? Eh bien non, plut\u00f4t le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre Yip Kai-Man, qui ne fut autre que le ma\u00eetre de Bruce Lee avant que ce dernier ne conqui\u00e8re le cin\u00e9ma hong-kongais. A l\u2019occasion de la sortie fran\u00e7aise du film \u00ab Ip Man 4 \u00bb que nous critiquerons ce week-end, int\u00e9ressons-nous aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 la figure de Yip Man qui a d\u00e9j\u00e0 fait l\u2019objet de nombreux films.<\/p><p>Le Kung Fu d\u00e9signe, de mani\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, les arts martiaux chinois, et Yip Man \u00e9tait un ma\u00eetre du Wing Chun, un art martial originaire du sud et orient\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement sur le combat rapproch\u00e9. Il participa \u00e0 l\u2019exportation du Wing Chun, avant que son plus connu disciple ne s\u2019en serve \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran de ses nombreux films. Il se trouve qu\u2019il est peut-\u00eatre l\u2019unique figure historique dont une dizaine de films biographiques retracent la vie ou un combat. Si la quadrilogie \u00ab Ip Man \u00bb (sans compter les spin-off) du r\u00e9alisateur hong-kongais Wilson Yip est bien s\u00fbr la plus connue, plusieurs autres films s\u2019int\u00e9ressent \u00e0 la figure du Ma\u00eetre Yip, tels que \u00ab Ip Man : La l\u00e9gende est n\u00e9e \u00bb, \u00ab Le Combat final \u00bb, ou encore \u00ab The Grandmaster \u00bb. S\u2019il est vrai que la saga n\u2019est pas parfaitement fid\u00e8le \u00e0 la vie de Yip, elle suit les grandes \u00e9tapes de sa vie et construit une intrigue faite de nombreux combats, avec toujours un nouveau d\u00e9fi \u00e0 relever. Si cela contribue au spectacle que sont ces films, la saga en profite \u00e9galement pour enseigner certaines valeurs, notamment au travers de personnages invent\u00e9s. La vie de Yip Man est alors sem\u00e9e d\u2019aventures plus ou moins r\u00e9elles mais qui donnent une bonne id\u00e9e du personnage tout en en faisant un v\u00e9ritable h\u00e9ros de saga. Les sc\u00e8nes de combats sont impressionnantes d\u2019une part pour leur c\u00f4t\u00e9 spectaculaire avec l\u2019utilisation des c\u00e2bles caract\u00e9ristique du cin\u00e9ma hong-kongais mais d\u2019autre part, \u00e9galement pour la profonde ma\u00eetrise martiale des acteurs qui permettent de filmer en plan large et ainsi de profiter des techniques et des encha\u00eenements de la chor\u00e9graphie.<\/p><p>Les \u00ab Ip Man \u00bb c\u2019est tout un style qui renvoie bien s\u00fbr aux films de Bruce Lee (La Fureur de Vaincre ; Op\u00e9ration Dragon ; Le Jeu de la Mort). Ce sont des films d\u2019arts martiaux, particuli\u00e8rement riches en combats mais ils ont aussi la force d\u2019\u00eatre des films historiques, des films qui explorent la culture martiale et chinoise. Enseigner des valeurs est une philosophie tr\u00e8s importante dans l\u2019art martial, et en bons films d\u2019arts martiaux, les \u00ab Ip Man \u00bb n\u2019\u00e9chappent pas \u00e0 la r\u00e8gle. Mais leur aspect historique ne peut pas non plus \u00eatre n\u00e9glig\u00e9. Les deux premiers apportent surtout un point de vue int\u00e9ressant sur des p\u00e9riodes historiques majeures de l\u2019histoire chinoise, \u00e0 savoir la guerre avec le Japon en 1937 dans le premier volet et la pr\u00e9sence britannique \u00e0 Hong-Kong dans le second. Ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements sont alors vus sous l\u2019angle des arts martiaux, comment ceux-ci s\u2019int\u00e8grent dans ces contextes si particuliers et quelles cons\u00e9quences les valeurs, le code d\u2019honneur, la dignit\u00e9 et la culture chinoise qui les impr\u00e8gnent peuvent avoir sur l\u2019adversit\u00e9 qu\u2019ils rencontrent \u00e0 travers la culture japonaise, leur arm\u00e9e imp\u00e9riale et leur Karat\u00e9, ou l\u2019occupation britannique et leur ring de boxe.<\/p><p>Les \u00ab Ip Man \u00bb ne sont pas qu\u2019un long biopic de la vie de Yip, il s\u2019agit v\u00e9ritablement d\u2019une saga, avec des personnages r\u00e9currents d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s au travers des opus, des th\u00e8mes diff\u00e9rents et une progression du personnage. Si les deux premiers volets comportent \u00e9galement une \u00e9volution historique majeure, ils \u00e9voluent tous dans la chor\u00e9graphie des combats. Le style est diff\u00e9rent \u00e0 chaque opus en raison du contexte dans lequel se situe l\u2019action : le Kung-Fu de Yip fait face au Karat\u00e9 japonais dans le premier volet, puis \u00e0 la boxe anglaise dans le second et enfin \u00e0 lui-m\u00eame dans le troisi\u00e8me avec un duel Wing Chun vs Wing Chun \u00e0 la recherche des racines m\u00eames de ce style.<\/p><p>N\u00e9anmoins, si le troisi\u00e8me opus est toujours impr\u00e9gn\u00e9 de valeurs et comporte un combat tr\u00e8s impressionnant dans un escalier, le film prend un virage plus marqu\u00e9 vers la saga. En effet, beaucoup plus de petits combats pars\u00e8ment l\u2019intrigue, de nouveaux personnages sont introduits pour \u00eatre ensuite d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s en spin-off, l\u2019aspect familial y est bien plus approfondi et une intrigue moins d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e puisque divis\u00e9e en plusieurs histoires auxquelles Yip est li\u00e9e, font du troisi\u00e8me opus un volet plus faible pour moi. L\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment historique auquel l\u2019intrigue est ici li\u00e9e, la corruption et les triades, n\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve pas le film en le\u00e7on historique et philosophique comme les deux pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents. Cet aspect saga des \u00ab Ip Man \u00bb renvoie un peu au \u00ab Rocky \u00bb am\u00e9ricain avec ici le ma\u00eetre du combat, symbole de dignit\u00e9 et h\u00e9ros d\u2019un peuple. Personnellement, je trouve que regarder les \u00ab Ip Man \u00bb et \u00ab The Grandmaster \u00bb permet non seulement d\u2019\u00eatre diverti, d\u2019assister \u00e0 un spectacle, de s\u2019impr\u00e9gner de valeurs et d\u2019en apprendre davantage sur la culture chinoise tout en ayant une id\u00e9e assez claire de la vie de Yip. En effet, le film de Won Kar-Wai est d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9 plus biographique, plus r\u00e9aliste et plus dur que les films de Wilson Yip, et d\u2019un autre c\u00f4t\u00e9, il est \u00e9galement plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ral en ne se focalisant pas uniquement sur Yip. L\u2019h\u00e9ritage de la famille Gong est ainsi un point important de l\u2019intrigue, auquel Yip est certes li\u00e9, mais qui aboutit donc au d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019autres personnages pour approfondir la contextualisation et les le\u00e7ons apport\u00e9es par le film. Celui-ci appara\u00eet en effet, plus th\u00e9orique que la saga de Wilson Yip, le Kung-Fu y \u00e9tant bien plus d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 sous son c\u00f4t\u00e9 valeurs que combat.<\/p><p>Cependant, \u00ab The Grandmaster \u00bb n\u2019est pas pour autant d\u00e9nu\u00e9 de sc\u00e8nes d\u2019action. La sc\u00e8ne d\u2019introduction en est d\u2019ailleurs la preuve, avec un magnifique combat de Yip Man face \u00e0 de multiples assaillants sous la pluie. Le combat est particuli\u00e8rement esth\u00e9tique, tout comme l\u2019ensemble du film, avec un important travail sur le visuel, des d\u00e9cors aux couleurs. De mani\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, le film de Wong Kar-Wai est bien plus cin\u00e9matographique que les \u00ab Ip Man \u00bb, bien plus beau, les plans plus sophistiqu\u00e9s. Mais il faut dire, que les deux films ne recherchent pas exactement le m\u00eame but, les uns sont plus orient\u00e9s vers l\u2019action, quand l\u2019autre recherche l\u2019art entre cin\u00e9ma et martial. N\u00e9anmoins, si j\u2019ai peut-\u00eatre un l\u00e9ger regret concernant les magnifiques combats de \u00ab The Grandmaster \u00bb, ce serait que l\u2019ensemble d\u2019un combat tel que celui d\u2019introduction, peut sembler moins clair avec une utilisation d\u2019outils cin\u00e9matographiques plus accrue (ralentis, zooms, c\u00e2bles). S\u2019il est vrai que c\u2019est r\u00e9ussi visuellement, on voit malheureusement moins la pratique martiale des acteurs, ce qui est de mon point de vue, un aspect tr\u00e8s impressionnant des combats de la saga \u00ab Ip Man \u00bb.<\/p><p>Si la saga \u201cIp Man\u201d appara\u00eet donc, \u00e0 premi\u00e8re vue, comme une saga d\u2019action, elle est en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 bien plus riche que cela. Et s\u2019il est vrai que ses films sont structur\u00e9s de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re avec toujours une division en trois actes et un combat final, elle apporte beaucoup : des valeurs martiales aux le\u00e7ons de vie en passant par un cours d\u2019histoire et de culture chinoise. Bruce Lee would you tell me? Well no, rather the famous Yip Man, who was none other than Bruce Lee&rsquo;s master before the latter conquered Hong Kong cinema. For the French release of the film \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man 4\u00a0\u00bb that we will review this weekend, let&rsquo;s focus today on the figure of Yip Man who has already been the focus of many films.<\/p><p>Kung Fu generally refers to Chinese martial arts, and Yip Man was a master of Wing Chun, a martial art originating from the south and particularly oriented towards close-quarters combat. He participated in the export of Wing Chun, before his most famous disciple used it on the screen of his numerous movies. He is perhaps the only historical figure whose life or combat has been depicted in a dozen biographical films. If the \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man\u00a0\u00bb quadrilogy (not counting the spin-offs) of the Hong Kong director Wilson Yip is of course the most famous, several other films focus on the figure of Master Yip, such as \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man: The Legend is Born\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0The Final Fight\u00a0\u00bb, or \u00ab\u00a0The Grandmaster\u00a0\u00bb. This rich corpus allows us to have a rather precise idea of his life, the stages he went through and his teachings.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14734 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2135.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2135.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2135-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2135-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2135-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>First of all, of course, there is the \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man\u00a0\u00bb quadrilogy which popularized the story of this great master interpreted here by Donnie Yen, himself a martial artist (who became a must in Hong Kong after the withdrawal of Jackie Chan and Jet Li). If it is true that the saga is not perfectly faithful to Yip&rsquo;s life, it follows the main stages of his life and builds a plot made of many fights, always with a new challenge to overcome. If this contributes to the spectacle that these films are, the saga also takes advantage of it to teach certain values, especially through invented characters. The life of Yip Man is then full of adventures more or less real, but which give a good idea of the character while making him a true saga hero. The fight scenes are impressive on the one hand for their spectacular side with the use of cables characteristic of Hong Kong cinema, but also for the strong martial mastery of the actors who allow to film in wide shot and thus to enjoy the techniques and sequences of the choreography.<\/p><p>The \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man\u00a0\u00bb is a whole style which refers of course to the films of Bruce Lee (Fist of Fury; Enter the Dragon; Game of Death). They are martial arts films, particularly rich in fighting but they also have the strength of being historical films, films that explore martial and Chinese culture. Teaching values is a very important philosophy in martial arts, and as good martial arts movies, the \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man\u00a0\u00bb films are no exception to the rule. But their historical aspect cannot be neglected either. The first two films especially bring an interesting point of view on major historical eras of Chinese history, namely the war against Japan in 1937 in the first one and the British presence in Hong Kong in the second one. These events are then seen from the perspective of martial arts, how they fit into such particular contexts and what consequences the Chinese values, code of honor, dignity and culture that permeate them may have on the adversity they encounter through Japanese culture, their imperial army and Karate, or the British occupation and their boxing ring.<\/p><p>The \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man\u00a0\u00bb films are not just a long biopic of Yip&rsquo;s life, it is truly a saga, with recurring characters developed through the installments, different themes, and a progression of the character. If the first two parts also include a major historical evolution, they all evolve in the choreography of the fights. The style is different in each opus because of the context in which the action takes place: Yip&rsquo;s Kung-Fu confronts Japanese Karate in the first one, then English boxing in the second and finally itself in the third with a Wing Chun vs Wing Chun duel in search of the very roots of this style.<\/p><p>Nevertheless, if the third installment is still imbued with values and includes a very impressive fight in a staircase, the film takes a sharper turn towards the saga. Indeed, many more small fights are scattered throughout the plot, new characters are introduced and then developed in spin-off, the family aspect is much more in-depth and a less developed plot since it is divided into several stories to which Yip is linked, make the third opus a weaker part for me. The historical element to which the plot is linked here, corruption and triads, does not elevate the film into a historical and philosophical lesson like the two previous ones. This saga aspect of the \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man\u00a0\u00bb films is a bit like the American \u00ab\u00a0Rocky\u00a0\u00bb with here a fighting master, symbol of dignity and hero of a people. The Chinese saga, however, insists more on values, and develops a thematic progression from Yip&rsquo;s survival to the learning of life, through his ability to adapt.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14736 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2137.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2137.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2137-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2137-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Snapshot_2137-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Several other films deal with the life of Yip Man more or less precisely and from different angles. Personally, I find that watching \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0The Grandmaster\u00a0\u00bb not only allows you to be entertained, to experience a show, to be imbued with values and to learn more about Chinese culture while having a clear idea of Yip&rsquo;s life. Indeed, Won Kar-Wai&rsquo;s film is on the one hand more biographical, more realistic and tougher than Wilson Yip&rsquo;s films, and on the other hand it is also broader by not focusing only on Yip. The legacy of the Gong family is thus an important point in the plot, to which Yip is certainly linked, but which therefore leads to the development of other characters to deepen the contextualization and lessons brought by the film. Indeed, the film appears more theoretical than Wilson Yip&rsquo;s saga, Kung-Fu being much more developed in its values than in its combat.<\/p><p>However, \u00ab\u00a0The Grandmaster\u00a0\u00bb is not devoid of action scenes. The opening scene is proof of this, with a magnificent fight of Yip Man facing multiple attackers in the rain. The fight is particularly aesthetic, just like the whole film, with an important work on the visuals, from the sets to the colors. In general, Wong Kar-Wai&rsquo;s film is much more cinematic than the \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man\u00a0\u00bb saga, much more beautiful, the shots more sophisticated. But it must be said that the two films do not seek exactly the same goal, some are more action-oriented, while the other seeks the art between cinema and martial arts. Nevertheless, if I have perhaps a slight regret concerning the magnificent fights of \u00ab\u00a0The Grandmaster\u00a0\u00bb, it would be that the overall fight, such as the introductory one, may seem less clear with a greater use of cinematographic tools (slow motion, zooms, cables). If it&rsquo;s true that it&rsquo;s visually successful, we unfortunately see less of the martial practice of the actors, which is in my opinion a very impressive aspect of the \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man\u00a0\u00bb fights.<\/p><p>The \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man\u00a0\u00bb saga might at first glance seem like an action saga, but it is much richer than that. And if it is true that his films are structured in the same way, always with a division in three acts and a final fight, it brings a lot, from martial values to life lessons as well as a Chinese history and culture lesson. In this respect, the first two installments are for me really great films and excellent martial arts films. \u00ab\u00a0Ip Man 4\u00a0\u00bb should conclude this beautiful saga with the visit of Yip
