C\u2019est une \u0153uvre qui nous laisse perplexe \u00e0 la sortie, d\u2019une part parce qu\u2019elle s\u2019ach\u00e8ve avec plus de questions que de r\u00e9ponses et d\u2019autre part pour toute l\u2019ambigu\u00eft\u00e9 dont elle fait preuve au cours de son intrigue symphonique de 157 minutes.<\/p><p>Favorite pour l\u2019Oscar de la meilleure actrice cette ann\u00e9e, Cate Blanchett impressionne une fois de plus par la pr\u00e9cision de son interpr\u00e9tation, du jeu de son personnage sur sc\u00e8ne lors de l\u2019interview d\u2019ouverture \u00e0 son incroyable ma\u00eetrise de la langue allemande dans la vie quotidienne, et par la puissance de sa performance aussi bien dans les silences que les longues tirades o\u00f9 elle occupe tout l\u2019espace aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d\u2019un remarquable casting secondaire de Nina Hoss \u00e0 No\u00e9mie Merlant en passant par Mark Strong. Mais s\u2019il est principalement vendu pour l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation renversante de son actrice australienne qui lui a d\u00e9j\u00e0 valu un Golden Globe, un CCA et la coupe Volpi \u00e0 la Mostra de Venise, \u00ab T\u00e1r \u00bb d\u00e9sar\u00e7onne surtout pour son impressionnant sc\u00e9nario plein d\u2019ambivalences.<\/p><p>Todd Field livre avec son troisi\u00e8me film un examen complexe des dynamiques toxiques du pouvoir. Si son propos sonne juste et tr\u00e8s contemporain, son intrigue n\u2019est pas vou\u00e9e \u00e0 trancher mais laisse au spectateur un espace de r\u00e9flexion, une histoire \u00e0 d\u00e9crypter. Il faut lire entre les lignes pour cerner ce labyrinthe qu\u2019est \u00ab T\u00e1r \u00bb, de la relation de Lydia avec son assistante, \u00e0 celle avec la pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 son nom de sc\u00e8ne Lydia T\u00e1r qui n\u2019est autre qu\u2019une anagramme d\u2019art et de rat. Le film maintient un \u00e9trange myst\u00e8re tout du long entre puzzles, bruits sourds, disparitions et apparitions furtives d\u2019un personnage cach\u00e9 comme un voile fantastique sur une intrigue r\u00e9aliste ou une pr\u00e9monition du destin de sa protagoniste.<\/p><p>Cette protagoniste est d\u2019abord pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e par un long et \u00e9logieux CV dict\u00e9 par un vrai journaliste avant que le film ne renverse progressivement notre point de vue, la basculant d\u2019h\u00e9ro\u00efne f\u00e9minine \u00e0 anti-h\u00e9ros universel. \u00ab T\u00e1r \u00bb est ainsi l\u2019histoire du basculement d\u2019un personnage autant dans sa vie que dans notre perception de ce dernier, ce n\u2019est pas une simple histoire de chute d\u2019une figure au sommet de sa gloire. Mais au c\u0153ur de ce protagoniste se trouve un paradoxe : si c\u2019est une femme malsaine c\u2019est aussi une grande artiste, elle est aussi dou\u00e9e qu\u2019abusive. Sur le plan moral ou \u00e9thique, on ne peut que s\u2019offenser devant son comportement mais sur un plan professionnel ou artistique, il est ind\u00e9niable que ses choix apportent une r\u00e9elle plus-value musicale. Ce n\u2019est donc pas le produit final qui pose probl\u00e8me mais bien les intentions de sa cr\u00e9atrice et T\u00e1r se retrouve alors prise \u00e0 son propre jeu tant elle mart\u00e8le \u00e0 son public de commencer par comprendre le compositeur pour comprendre sa musique.<\/p><p>La composition de Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir (Joker) accompagne ce portrait singulier d\u2019une femme cheffe d\u2019orchestre pour qui la question du genre est un non-sujet et dont la vie est faite de raideur, d\u2019aust\u00e9rit\u00e9 et d\u2019opulence. La mise en sc\u00e8ne refl\u00e8te cette personnalit\u00e9 dans une palette de couleur fade voire gla\u00e7ante entre le noir et le gris. It is a film that leaves us puzzled at the end, partly because it ends with more questions than answers, and partly because of the ambiguity it displays in its 157-minute symphonic plot.<\/p><p>A favorite for this year&rsquo;s Best Actress Oscar, Cate Blanchett once again impresses with the precision of her performance, from her character&rsquo;s acting on stage during the opening interview to her incredible command of the German language in everyday life, and with the intensity of her delivery in both the silences and the long tirades where she takes up all the space alongside a remarkable supporting cast featuring Nina Hoss, No\u00e9mie Merlant and Mark Strong. But if it is primarily marketed for the stunning performance of its Australian actress, which has already earned her a Golden Globe, a CCA and the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival, \u201cT\u00e1r\u201d is especially disarming for its impressive screenplay full of misunderstandings.<\/p><p>With his third film, Todd Field delivers a complex examination of the toxic dynamics of power. While his message rings true and is very contemporary, his plot is not intended to be conclusive, but leaves the audience a place to think, a story to decipher. You have to read between the lines to understand the maze that is \u201cT\u00e1r\u201d, from Lydia&rsquo;s relationship with her assistant, to that with her previous one, right up to her stage name Lydia T\u00e1r, which is nothing more than an anagram of both art and rat. The film sustains a strange mystery throughout between puzzles, thuds, disappearances and sneak appearances of a hidden character as a ghostly veil over a realistic plot or a premonition of its protagonist&rsquo;s fate.<\/p><p>This protagonist is first introduced by a long and flattering resume given by a real journalist before the film gradually reverses our point of view, flipping her from female heroine to universal anti-hero. \u201cT\u00e1r\u201d is thus the story of a character&rsquo;s reversal both in her life and in our perception of her, it is not a straightforward story of the fall of a figure at the peak of her glory. But at the heart of this protagonist is a paradox: if she is a nasty woman, she is also a great artist, she is as talented as she is abusive. On a moral or ethical level, one can only be offended by her behavior, but on a professional or artistic one, it is undeniable that her choices add real musical value. It is not the final product that poses a problem but the intentions of its author, and T\u00e1r finds herself caught at her own game as she reminds her audience to start by understanding the composer in order to understand his\/her music.<\/p><p>The score by Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir (Joker) complements this singular portrait of a female conductor for whom the question of gender is a non-issue and whose life is one of stiffness, austerity and opulence. The mise en sc\u00e8ne reflects this personality in a bland and even chilling color palette between black and gray. Beyond some striking oner shots, cinematographer Florian Hoffmeister shoots Todd Field&rsquo;s script like a documentary and carefully composes his shots, almost always allowing for a depth of focus, an opening to another room, a door or a window.<\/p><p>If the end is frustrating because of the haste of the events, the long corridor of tension and doubt that the spectator will have gone through
