On y suit la rencontre entre deux ados que tout oppose, qui vont pourtant s\u2019unir et vivre en parall\u00e8le de leur histoire d\u2019amour des exp\u00e9riences d\u2019une rare intensit\u00e9 tout au long de leur vie dans le nord de la France. Pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 cette ann\u00e9e au Festival de Cannes en comp\u00e9tition officielle, le film remont\u00e9 et raccourci (atteignant tout de m\u00eame les 2h40) est sorti mercredi 16 octobre 2024. Au moment d\u2019\u00e9crire ces lignes, il s\u2019agit du troisi\u00e8me meilleur d\u00e9marrage de l\u2019ann\u00e9e au box-office en France\u00a0avec d\u00e9j\u00e0 plus d\u2019un million de spectateurs !<\/p><p>Et \u00e0 nouveau, c\u2019est une r\u00e9ussite sensationnelle\u00a0! Un v\u00e9ritable carton. Port\u00e9 par un casting XXL, \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019Amour Ouf\u00a0\u00bb se distingue par sa beaut\u00e9, sa photographie sublime, sa musique entra\u00eenante, ses dialogues poignants et l\u2019\u00e9motion vive qu\u2019ils transmettent au spectateur. Les personnages sont extr\u00eamement attachants, v\u00e9ritable prouesse vu leur profil, souvent antagonistes, violents, brutaux.<\/p><p>Le film propose une construction en deux arcs narratifs principaux. Nous suivons d\u2019abord les protagonistes pendant leur adolescence (une grosse premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du film), avant de les retrouver plus tard, adultes, pour la suite et fin. Jackie et Clotaire sont donc d\u2019abord incarn\u00e9s par Mallory Wanecque et Malik Frikah, puis par Ad\u00e8le Exarchopoulos et Fran\u00e7ois Civil. Alors que ce sont ces deux derniers qui ont largement particip\u00e9 \u00e0 promouvoir le film aupr\u00e8s du grand public, c\u2019est plut\u00f4t le premier duo d\u2019acteurs qui porte le film. Tous deux n\u00e9s en 2006, ils sont impressionnants de maturit\u00e9 et font oublier leur jeunesse. Ce sont v\u00e9ritablement eux deux qui interpr\u00e8tent le mieux cet amour inconditionnel, tant\u00f4t impossible, tant\u00f4t si fusionnel, qui \u00e9meut le public parfois jusqu\u2019aux larmes. D\u00e9j\u00e0 h\u00e2te de les retrouver prochainement (aux C\u00e9sars\u00a0?).<\/p><p>Mais la magie de ce film, c\u2019est d\u2019avoir su conserver cet \u00e9lan jusqu\u2019au bout du film, m\u00eame dans le deuxi\u00e8me acte. Vous lirez ailleurs qu\u2019il y a \u2018deux films dans le film\u2019 (y compris au sein de notre r\u00e9daction, ndlr), ou bien que le rythme \u2018s\u2019essouffle \u00e0 mesure que l\u2019intrigue avance\u2019. De mon point de vue, il n\u2019en est rien. Gilles Lellouche r\u00e9alise un coup de ma\u00eetre avec une r\u00e9alisation pointue qui fait parfaitement le lien entre deux personnages, que tout attire et oppose \u00e0 la fois, \u00e0 deux \u00e9poques diff\u00e9rentes de la vie. Ce qui permet de faire le lien entre ces deux arcs, ces deux temps dans le film, c\u2019est la notion de choix, qui est le v\u00e9ritable fil conducteur. En effet, \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019Amour Ouf\u00a0\u00bb n\u2019est pas qu\u2019un film d\u2019amour, il va bien au-del\u00e0. Il traite de la construction des individus au travers de leur vie, de leurs exp\u00e9riences, et de la fa\u00e7on de se forger une identit\u00e9. La notion de choix de vie est centrale et d\u00e9terminante, en t\u00e9moignent les sc\u00e8nes de d\u00e9but et de fin (no spoil, vous d\u00e9couvrirez \u00e7a en salles\u00a0!).<\/p><p>Mais ce qui caract\u00e9rise aussi \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019Amour Ouf\u00a0\u00bb, c\u2019est bien la violence qu\u2019il pr\u00e9sente. En effet, les personnages en sont tous \u00e0 leur mani\u00e8re gangren\u00e9s. Beno\u00eet Poelvoorde incarne un baron de la p\u00e8gre repr\u00e9sentant la violence physique (les coups, le sang\u2026). Karim Leklou, un p\u00e8re tr\u00e8s dur et parfois sinistre repr\u00e9sentant la violence familiale et infantile. Vincent Lacoste, un mari violent psychologiquement avec sa femme. N\u00e9anmoins, on ne peut pas dire que cette violence soit pour autant ce que l\u2019on retient du film. Elle a beau \u00eatre partout, elle est toujours secondaire et sert plut\u00f4t de support au d\u00e9veloppement des autres sentiments explor\u00e9s (l\u2019amour \u00e9videmment, le doute, l\u2019all\u00e9gresse\u2026).<\/p><p>C\u2019est en tout cas un immense plaisir de voir que le cin\u00e9ma fran\u00e7ais est capable de produire et r\u00e9aliser de tels films. Proche du chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre, \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019Amour Ouf\u00a0\u00bb fera date \u00e0 coup s\u00fbr et s\u2019inscrit dans une belle lign\u00e9e de sorties fran\u00e7aises ces derniers mois. The story follows two teenagers who are at odds with each other, but who come together to live out their love story in parallel with experiences of rare intensity throughout their lives in northern France. Presented at this year&rsquo;s Cannes Film Festival in official competition, the reedited and shortened film (still clocking in at 2 hours 40 minutes) was released on October 16, 2024. At the time of writing, this is the third-best box-office opening of the year in France, with already over a million spectators!<\/p><p>And once again, this is a sensational success! A real box-office smash. Carried by a five-star cast, \u201cBeating Hearts\u201d stands out for its beauty, sublime cinematography, lively music, poignant dialogue and the vivid emotion it conveys to the viewer. The characters are extremely engaging, which is a real feat given their often antagonistic, violent, or even brutal personalities.<\/p><p>The film is built around two main story arcs. First, we follow the protagonists through their teenage years (basically the first half of the film), before meeting them again later, as adults, for the continuation and ending. Jackie and Clotaire are thus played first by Mallory Wanecque and Malik Frikah, and then by Ad\u00e8le Exarchopoulos and Fran\u00e7ois Civil. While the latter two played a major role in promoting the film to the general public, it&rsquo;s actually the first pair of actors who really drive the movie. Both born in 2006, they are impressively mature and make us forget their youth. It&rsquo;s really the two of them who best portray this unconditional love, at times impossible, at others so fusional, that moves audiences to tears at times. We\u2019re already very much looking forward to see them again soon (who knows? at the C\u00e9sars?).<\/p><p>But the magic of this film lies in this momentum which it carries right to the end, even in the second part. You may read elsewhere that there are \u2018two films within one\u2019 (even in our own writing team, editor\u2019s note), or that the pace \u2018slows down as the plot goes on\u2019. From my point of view, this is not the case. Gilles Lellouche pulls off a masterstroke with a sharp direction that perfectly connects two characters, who are both attracted to and opposed to each other, at two different times in their lives. What connects these two arcs, these two times in the film, is the notion of choice, which is the real thrust. Indeed, \u201cBeating Hearts\u201d is not just a film about love, it goes far beyond that. It deals with the building of individuals through their lives, their experiences, and the way they forge an identity. The notion of life choices is central and key, as shown by the opening and closing scenes (no spoilers, you&rsquo;ll find out in theaters!).<\/p><p>\u201cBeating Hearts\u201d is also characterized by its violence. Indeed, the characters are all, in their own way, plagued by it. Beno\u00eet Poelvoorde plays an underworld kingpin representing physical violence (beatings, blood&#8230;). Karim Leklou, a harsh and sometimes sinister father, represents family and child violence. And Vincent Lacoste, a psychologically violent husband to his wife. However, this violence is not what we remember about the film. It may be everywhere, but it&rsquo;s always peripheral, instead providing a framework for the exploration of other feelings (love, of course, but also doubt, joy&#8230;).<\/p><p>In any case, what a great pleasure to see that French cinema is able to produce and make such films. \u201cBeating Hearts\u201d is quite simply very close to a masterpiece, and will definitely make history as it adds to a wonderful list of French releases in the last few months.
