Une immense d\u00e9ception due au fait que le film ne r\u00e9ponde pas aux attentes\u00a0: ni celles du public, ni celles d\u2019un studio qui va se retrouver avec pr\u00e8s de $200M de d\u00e9ficit sur une telle production. C\u2019est donc d\u00e9finitivement un film subversif o\u00f9 les attentes (majoritaires) du public ne sont pas remplies. Mais est-ce vraiment un probl\u00e8me\u00a0? Et cela fait-il vraiment de \u00ab\u00a0Joker 2\u00a0\u00bb un mauvais film ou simplement une suite frustrante\u00a0? Car si \u00ab\u00a0Folie \u00e0 deux\u00a0\u00bb n\u2019\u00e9tait pas une suite, serait-il aussi d\u00e9cri\u00e9\u00a0?<\/p><p>En 2019, Todd Philips prenait d\u00e9j\u00e0 un risque avec le premier \u00ab\u00a0Joker\u00a0\u00bb en s\u2019aventurant sur un film solo (sans Batman ou autres personnages des comics) et surtout sans la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre figure d\u2019antagoniste nihiliste de son personnage-titre. Le film avait alors surpris tout le monde en remportant \u00e0 la fois le Lion d\u2019Or \u00e0 Venise (ce qui est extr\u00eamement rare pour un blockbuster hollywoodien de la sorte), en ayant conquis le public avec plus d\u2019un milliard de recettes, et en reportant deux Oscars l\u2019un pour sa compositrice Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir et l\u2019autre pour son acteur principal Joaquin Phoenix (deuxi\u00e8me acteur r\u00e9compens\u00e9 d\u2019un Oscar pour le m\u00eame r\u00f4le). M\u00eame si elle n\u2019\u00e9tait pas pr\u00e9vue initialement, on peut donc comprendre la volont\u00e9 de faire une suite, mais ce d\u00e9sir n\u00e9 de la r\u00e9ussite du premier opus renseigne beaucoup la nature m\u00eame de cette suite et de sa perception par le public. Car \u00ab\u00a0Folie \u00e0 deux\u00a0\u00bb est tr\u00e8s critiqu\u00e9 pour son manque de d\u00e9veloppement au-del\u00e0 de l\u2019arc du personnage dans le premier opus, voire pour son revers narratif. Or, m\u00eame s\u2019il est vrai qu\u2019avec plus de trois fois plus de budget, on aurait pu s\u2019attendre \u00e0 plus de \u2018folie\u2019, \u00ab\u00a0Joker 2\u00a0\u00bb boucle bel et bien l\u2019histoire du premier film mais de mani\u00e8re audacieuse quitte \u00e0 surprendre, voire d\u00e9cevoir.<\/p><p>Il faut en effet saluer l\u2019ambition artistique de vouloir \u00e0 la fois changer de ton et de genre pour une suite \u2013 qui plus est, parmi les plus attendues de l\u2019ann\u00e9e \u2013 alors que dans l\u2019immense majorit\u00e9 des cas (trop souvent pourrait-on dire\u00a0?) les suites de saga visent avant tout \u00e0 perp\u00e9tuer le statu quo. Et dans la mesure o\u00f9 le premier opus allait d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e0 contre-courant des univers connect\u00e9s de comics et de super-h\u00e9ros \u00e0 la MCU ou DCU, on peut logiquement comprendre la volont\u00e9 de poursuivre cette direction novatrice pour sa suite.<\/p><p>Or, avec un premier opus dont le message n\u2019avait pas \u00e9t\u00e9 pris de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re par tous, certains y voyant une dimension \u00e9pique ou une construction de la figure mythique des comics, beaucoup s\u2019attendaient \u00e0 une poursuite du d\u00e9veloppement du personnage de joker. Mais son apog\u00e9e a pourtant \u00e9t\u00e9 atteinte \u00e0 la fin du premier film, et cette suite ne se concentre donc pas sur le mythe du joker mais plut\u00f4t sur le personnage d\u2019Arthur Fleck. Derri\u00e8re son ton surprenant, se cache donc une structure tr\u00e8s classique\u00a0: celle de l\u2019ascension d\u2019une ic\u00f4ne dans le premier opus, puis sa chute dans le second. Ce n\u2019est donc pas une suite qui pousse le curseur de la violence plus loin ou qui met en sc\u00e8ne la r\u00e9\u00e9mergence du Joker car celle-ci ne se fait qu\u2019\u00e0 travers les yeux de Lee (d\u2019o\u00f9 la \u2018folie \u00e0 deux\u2019).<\/p><p>On est donc dans la situation inverse des comics o\u00f9 habituellement c\u2019est Harley Quinn (alias Lee ici) qui est d\u00e9pendante du Joker. Or il n\u2019y a plus v\u00e9ritablement de Joker dans ce film, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 arr\u00eat\u00e9 dans le pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, et quand on le retrouve il a vieilli et n\u2019est plus que l\u2019ombre de lui-m\u00eame, recroquevill\u00e9, h\u00e9b\u00e9t\u00e9 par les m\u00e9dicaments, d\u2019une maigreur effrayante. Lorsqu\u2019un garde de prison l\u2019encourage \u00e0 sortir une blague, rien ne vient. Il a beau essayer, il n\u2019arrive pas \u00e0 retrouver son fameux rire jaune qui finit par se confondre en profond chagrin. Qui est donc pr\u00e9sent\u00a0: le Joker ou Arthur Fleck\u00a0? Est-il fou ou joue-t-il au fou\u00a0? A travers son proc\u00e8s et son avocate, le film questionne l\u2019id\u00e9e de la double personnalit\u00e9 et cette dualit\u00e9 se retrouve dans le titre et jusque dans la palette de couleurs naviguant entre la froideur de ses bleus et la chaleur de ses jaunes. La petite introduction anim\u00e9e de Sylvain Chomet r\u00e9sume d\u2019ailleurs \u00e0 elle seule la dualit\u00e9 du film.<\/p><p>Mais \u00ab Folie \u00e0 deux \u00bb renvoie aussi au duo au c\u0153ur de cette suite, un duo bien connu de l\u2019univers des comics : Joker &amp; Harley Quinn ou Arthur Fleck &amp; Lee ici. Deux intern\u00e9s \u00e0 Arkham, deux patients qui partagent une psychose et dont le feu de l\u2019amour nourrit une folie et un mythe du Joker. Et pour d\u00e9peindre ce d\u00e9lire partag\u00e9 et cette difficult\u00e9 de communication, le film mise sur des s\u00e9quences musicales et chant\u00e9es en ne reprenant que des standards des ann\u00e9es 1960 fantasm\u00e9s par les deux tourtereaux (dont une reprise de Jacques Brel). Et dans la mesure o\u00f9 ils voient leur propagation du chaos dans la ville comme un spectacle, c\u2019est une belle id\u00e9e que de repr\u00e9senter leur folie \u00e0 travers un autre monde, celui de la musique, un monde qu\u2019ils fa\u00e7onnent \u00e0 leur guise. Mais l\u2019amour qu\u2019ils partagent n\u2019est pourtant pas r\u00e9ciproque : toutes les chansons d\u2019Arthur Fleck sont ainsi sur sa relation et son amour de Lee alors que les siennes sont soit sur elle soit sur sa relation avec le Joker. Ce fantasme partag\u00e9 du titre n\u2019est ainsi pr\u00e9sent que dans l\u2019esprit de Lee. C\u2019est elle qui l\u2019encourage \u00e0 redevenir Joker, et elle cherche \u00e0 l\u2019utiliser pour atteindre son statut d\u2019ic\u00f4ne car elle \u2018n\u2019a jusqu\u2019ici rien fait de sa vie\u2019. C\u2019est pourquoi, elle continue de chanter quand Arthur veut quant \u00e0 lui discuter, pour maintenir en lui sa personnalit\u00e9 Joker.<\/p><p>Choisir Lady Gaga pour une telle version d\u2019Harley Quinn est alors une bonne id\u00e9e tant la chanteuse r\u00e9v\u00e8le au gr\u00e9 de ses tournages, une palette de jeu assez vari\u00e9e et doit faire en sorte cette fois de ne pas chanter parfaitement pour accompagner son partenaire dans leur d\u00e9lire musical commun. Joaquin Phoenix livre d\u2019ailleurs une nouvelle excellente prestation bien qu\u2019elle soit par nature, plus limit\u00e9e dans ses actions, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s notamment d\u2019un toujours tr\u00e8s bon Brendan Gleeson. Et \u00ab Folie \u00e0 deux \u00bb brille techniquement par sa mise en sc\u00e8ne travaill\u00e9e avec un formidable travail de cadrage, d\u2019\u00e9clairage, et de photographie de Lawrence Sher.<\/p><p>Mais si l\u2019on prend clairement une claque visuelle, l\u2019ennui peut parfois pointer le bout de son nez rouge avec notamment une intrigue judiciaire qui tra\u00eene quelque peu en longueur. Et s\u2019il est vrai qu\u2019avec un film de presque 2h20 on aurait pu s\u2019attendre \u00e0 une intrigue un peu plus fournie, et avec la place accord\u00e9e au fantasme dans le premier opus, \u00e0 peut-\u00eatre plus de folies (notamment dans les s\u00e9quences musicales)\u00a0; le principal probl\u00e8me au c\u0153ur de \u00ab\u00a0Joker 2\u00a0\u00bb r\u00e9side dans le manque de d\u00e9veloppement de son tournant d\u00e9cisif dans le 3<sup>e<\/sup> acte. M\u00eame si la sc\u00e8ne avec Gary Puddle contient l\u2019essentiel, elle n\u2019est soit pas assez mise en avant comme sc\u00e8ne cl\u00e9, soit la prise de conscience d\u2019Arthur n\u2019est pas assez soulign\u00e9e par ailleurs. R\u00e9sultat\u00a0? \u00ab\u00a0Folie \u00e0 deux\u00a0\u00bb part sur de tr\u00e8s bonnes bases, avec de tr\u00e8s bonnes id\u00e9es, et une trame int\u00e9ressante pour son personnage dramatique, mais ne r\u00e9ussit pas toutes les \u00e9tapes de son r\u00e9cit.<\/p><p>C\u2019est donc un film dont l\u2019appr\u00e9ciation sera in\u00e9vitablement li\u00e9e (et variera grandement en fonction) aux attentes de chacun\u00a0: si vous y cherchez la figure du Joker, une continuit\u00e9 du commentaire social pr\u00e9sent dans le premier, une plong\u00e9e dans la psych\u00e9 aussi visc\u00e9rale que dans le pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, ou encore une v\u00e9ritable com\u00e9die musicale \u2026 vous serez tout simplement d\u00e9\u00e7us. A l\u2019image d\u2019un film comme \u00ab\u00a0Les derniers Jedi\u00a0\u00bb dans une autre saga bien connue, \u00ab\u00a0Joker 2\u00a0\u00bb offre un sc\u00e9nario int\u00e9ressant et risqu\u00e9 (o\u00f9 tout n\u2019est pas parfaitement ex\u00e9cut\u00e9, certes) mais qui offre une suite audacieuse et ambitieuse \u2013 qui malheureusement risque de condamner le studio \u00e0 ne plus tenter de tels paris sur ses gros projets.<\/p><\/div><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42480e6 elementor-widget__width-initial exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42480e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Joker or the idol in spite of himself &#8230;<\/p><p>This is undoubtedly, and will most certainly remain, the biggest disappointment of the year for the vast majority of the public as well as for the studio! This huge letdown is due to the fact that the film doesn&rsquo;t live up to expectations: neither those of the public, nor those of the studio, which will end up with a $200M loss on such a big production. So, this is definitely a subversive film in which the (predominant) expectations of the public are not fulfilled. But is this really an issue? And does that really make \u201cJoker 2\u201d a bad film, or just a frustrating sequel? Because if \u201cFolie \u00e0 deux\u201d weren&rsquo;t a sequel, would it be so despised?<\/p><p>In 2019, Todd Philips already took a risk with the first \u201cJoker\u201d by venturing into a solo film (without Batman or other comic book characters) and above all without the famous nihilist antagonist figure of his title character. The film surprised everyone by winning the Golden Lion at Venice (an extremely rare feat for a Hollywood blockbuster of this kind), winning over audiences with box-office grosses of over a billion, and winning two Oscars \u2013 one for composer Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir and the other for lead actor Joaquin Phoenix (the second actor to win an Oscar for the same role). Even if it wasn&rsquo;t initially planned, the decision to make a sequel is understandable, but this desire, born of the success of the first opus, tells us a great deal about the very nature of this sequel and how it is viewed by the audience. After all, \u201cFolie \u00e0 deux\u201d has been widely criticized for its lack of development beyond the character arc of the first installment, and even for its narrative setback. And yet, even if it&rsquo;s true that with more than three times the budget, we might have expected more \u2018folly\u2019, \u201cJoker 2\u201d does indeed bring the story of the first film to a close, but in an audacious way that may surprise or even disappoint.<\/p><p>The artistic ambition of attempting to change both tone and genre for a sequel \u2013 and one of the most highly-anticipated of the year \u2013 is indeed to be praised, when in the vast majority of cases (too often, one might say?) saga sequels are primarily about maintaining the status quo. And insofar as the first opus already went against the tide of connected comic book and superhero universes \u00e0 la MCU or DCU, we can quite logically understand the determination to pursue this creative direction with its sequel.<\/p><p>Yet, with a first film whose message was not taken in the same way by all, some seeing in it an epic dimension or a build-up of the mythical comic-book figure, many expected a continuation of the development of the Joker character. But the climax was reached at the end of the first film, so this sequel focuses not on the Joker mythos, but rather on the character of Arthur Fleck. Behind its surprising tone therefore lies a very classic structure: that of the rise of an icon in the first installment, followed by his fall in the second. It&rsquo;s not a sequel that pushes the violence envelope or features the re-emergence of the Joker, as the latter is only seen through Lee&rsquo;s eyes (hence the &lsquo;folie \u00e0 deux&rsquo;).<\/p><p>So, we&rsquo;re basically in the opposite situation to the comics, where usually it&rsquo;s Harley Quinn (alias Lee here) who&rsquo;s codependent on the Joker. But there&rsquo;s no real Joker in this film \u2013 he was arrested in the previous one, and by the time we find him, he&rsquo;s aged and nothing more than a shadow of his former self, cowering, drug-dazed and frighteningly thin. When a prison guard prompts him to crack a joke, nothing lands. No matter how hard he tries, he just can&rsquo;t find his famous wry laugh, which eventually turns to deep sorrow. So, who&rsquo;s there: the Joker or Arthur Fleck? Is he crazy or just playing the madman? Through his trial and his lawyer, the film explores the idea of dual personality, and this duality is reflected in the title and even in the color palette, with its cool blues and warm yellows. Sylvain Chomet&rsquo;s animated introduction alone sums up the film&rsquo;s duality.<\/p><p>But \u201cFolie \u00e0 deux\u201d also refers to the duo at the heart of this sequel, a well-known pairing in the comic book universe: Joker &amp; Harley Quinn or Arthur Fleck &amp; Lee here. Two Arkham inmates, two patients who share a psychosis and whose fiery love feeds the madness and myth of the Joker. And to depict this shared delusion and communication barrier, the film relies on musical and singing sequences, using only 1960s standards fantasized by the two lovebirds (including a cover of Jacques Brel). And insofar as they see their spread of chaos across the city as a spectacle, this is a clever idea to portray their madness through another world, that of music, a world they shape to their own liking. But the love they share is not mutual: all Arthur Fleck&rsquo;s songs are about his relationship and love for Lee, while hers are either about her or her relationship with the Joker. The shared fantasy of the title is only ever present in Lee&rsquo;s mind. It is she who pushes him to become the Joker again, and she seeks to use him to achieve her iconic status because she &lsquo;hasn&rsquo;t done anything with her life so far&rsquo;. That&rsquo;s why she keeps singing when Arthur wants to talk, to keep his Joker personality alive.<\/p><p>Choosing Lady Gaga for such a version of Harley Quinn is then a great idea, as the singer reveals a rather wide range of acting skills in the course of her films, and this time has to tamp down her singing to complement her partner in their shared musical delusion. Joaquin Phoenix delivers another top-notch performance, albeit a more restrained one by design, alongside the always excellent Brendan Gleeson. And \u201cFolie \u00e0 deux\u201d shines technically, with Lawrence Sher&rsquo;s superb framing, lighting and cinematography.<\/p><p>But while it&rsquo;s clearly a visual delight, boredom can sometimes creep in, particularly with a legal plot that drags on a bit. And while it&rsquo;s true that, with a running time of almost 2 hours 20 minutes, we might have expected a little more intrigue, and with the emphasis on fantasy in the first opus, perhaps a little more madness (particularly in the musical sequences); the main issue at the core of \u201cJoker 2\u201d lies in the lack of development of its crucial turning point in the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> act. Even if the scene with Gary Puddle provides the essentials, it&rsquo;s either not given enough emphasis as a pivotal scene, or Arthur&rsquo;s realization isn&rsquo;t emphasized enough elsewhere. The result? \u201cFolie \u00e0 deux\u201d gets off to a very good start, with some very good ideas and an interesting storyline for its dramatic character, but fails to deliver on all of its narrative milestones.<\/p><p>This is therefore a film whose value will inevitably depend on (and vary greatly according to) one&rsquo;s expectations: whether you&rsquo;re looking for the Joker figure, a continuation of the social commentary found in the first film, a journey into the psyche as visceral as in the previous one, or a real movie musical &#8230; you&rsquo;ll simply be let down. Much like a film such as \u201cThe Last Jedi\u201d in another popular saga, \u201cJoker 2\u201d offers an interesting and risky script (in which not everything is perfectly executed, admittedly), but it does offer a bold and ambitious sequel \u2013 which unfortunately risks condemning the studio to no longer attempt such gambles on its big projects.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl
