guerri\u00e8res africaines au XIXe si\u00e8cle prot\u00e9geant leur royaume du Dahomey en Afrique de l\u2019Ouest (au sud du B\u00e9nin actuel). Dans un contexte historique de conflit avec le royaume d\u2019Oyo et de commerce triangulaire, la g\u00e9n\u00e9rale Nanisca pr\u00e9pare ses troupes \u00e0 se battre pour leur peuple et leur mode de vie.<\/p><p>Pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 au festival de Toronto, ce film de guerri\u00e8res de Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard) \u00e9voque Afrique et f\u00e9minisme dans un r\u00e9cit de super-h\u00e9ro\u00efnes assez format\u00e9 mais n\u00e9anmoins convaincant. Situ\u00e9 \u00e0 mi-chemin entre la fresque historique et l\u2019\u00e9pop\u00e9e f\u00e9ministe, \u00ab The Woman King \u00bb c\u00e9l\u00e8bre l\u2019identit\u00e9 f\u00e9minine noire dans un film d\u2019action au style tr\u00e8s hollywoodien. Malgr\u00e9 ses bons sentiments et son classicisme narratif, il parvient \u00e0 r\u00e9v\u00e9ler la complexit\u00e9 historique et s\u2019av\u00e8re tr\u00e8s efficace dans la dimension spectaculaire de son r\u00e9cit.<\/p><p>Premier blockbuster port\u00e9 par des femmes afro-am\u00e9ricaines, \u00ab The Woman King \u00bb traite avant tout un sujet important et transmet un message toujours pertinent. Il faut en cela f\u00e9liciter Viola Davis et Sony pour avoir port\u00e9 et produit ce film qui pourrait s\u2019imposer comme le fer de lance d\u2019une nouvelle blaxploitation. Le fait qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse d\u2019un film de studio d\u00e9montre en effet une dynamique engag\u00e9e pour d\u00e9peindre l\u2019h\u00e9ro\u00efsme f\u00e9minin et qui plus est de ces Amazones africaines alors que l\u2019image de la femme africaine reste encore globalement celle de la mis\u00e8re et de la passivit\u00e9.<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s il ne faut pas faire erreur sur la marchandise (sans mauvais jeu de mot). En effet, le film reprend des \u00e9v\u00e9nements \u00e9tablis mais n\u2019est pas proprement bas\u00e9 sur des faits r\u00e9els comme nous l\u2019annonce le crawl d\u2019introduction d\u00e9crivant le contexte historique nous plongeant dans cette fiction. Il s\u2019av\u00e8re ainsi tr\u00e8s juste dans son contexte historique avec le r\u00e8gne de Gh\u00e9zo mais l\u2019intrigue prend des libert\u00e9s en particulier sur l\u2019attitude des Agoji\u00e9 envers la traite n\u00e9gri\u00e8re. Mais une fiction qui prend des libert\u00e9s n\u2019est pas un probl\u00e8me n\u2019est-ce pas ?<\/p><p>Le r\u00e9sultat final est une franche r\u00e9ussite nous plongeant au milieu des superbes paysages sud-africains au rythme de l\u2019\u00e9pique B.O. de Terrence Blanchard (Malcolm X ; BlacKkKlansman ; Harriet) et avec une poign\u00e9e d\u2019actrices \u00e9patantes dont Lashana Lynch se distingue une fois de plus aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim et de sa Majest\u00e9 John Boyega. Against a historical backdrop of conflict with the Oyo kingdom and triangular trade, General Nanisca readies her troops to fight for their people and their way of life.<\/p><p>Presented at the Toronto Film Festival, this female warrior movie from Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard) addresses Africa and feminism in a fairly formulaic but nonetheless compelling superheroine tale. Halfway between a historical drama and a feminist epic, \u201cThe Woman King\u201d celebrates black female identity in a very Hollywood-style action film. Despite its feel-good approach and conventional narrative, it manages to highlight the historical complexity and proves to be very successful in its spectacular dimension.<\/p><p>As the first blockbuster starring African-American women, \u201cThe Woman King\u201d deals above all with an important subject and delivers a still relevant message. Viola Davis and Sony are to be applauded for having brought and produced this film, which could become the flagship of a new blaxploitation. The fact that it is a studio production shows a willingness to portray female heroism and specifically that of these African Amazons, while the image of African women is still generally that of misery and passivity.<\/p><p>Then, let&rsquo;s not misread the picture. Indeed, the film revisits established events but is not properly based on real facts, as the opening crawl describing the historical context that brings us into this fictional film indicates. It is thus very accurate in its historical context with Gh\u00e9zo&rsquo;s reign, but the plot takes liberties in particular with the Agoji\u00e9&rsquo;s stance towards the slave trade. But a fiction that takes liberties is not a problem, right?<\/p><p>The final product is a success, immersing us in the beautiful South African landscapes to the beat of Terrence Blanchard&rsquo;s epic soundtrack (Malcolm X; BlacKkKlansman; Harriet) and with a handful of terrific actresses, including Lashana Lynch, who stands out once again alongside Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim and His Majesty John Boyega. If it is not devoid of narrative conveniences, \u201cThe Woman King\u201d remains an African epic mixing slavery legacy, feminism and heroism in a tasty melting pot of cultures.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div
